**** Excellent, As Usual
edwagreen11 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After her mother with MS is found dead and a heart attack is ruled as a cause of death, the step-daughter claims that her step-father killed her according to the Lord.

She seems to be obviously completely off and it seems to be a closed case. You know the rest, but what makes this so good is the way that the truth comes out.

The second case is just as good as it involves Frank investigating a deceased priest who has been nominated for saint hood. His moral convictions are really put to the test as he uncovers a really radical priest for his time.

The family Sunday dinner serves as a basis to talk everything out.

Tom doing a job for the church
bkoganbing25 August 2016
I really could not buy the part of this story where Tom Selleck gets to do an investigation of a former priest being considered for canonization. With what he found out his cop instincts would have kicked in and someone would have been arrested.

The other main plot element involved Donnie Wahlberg having his cop instincts kick in when a heart attack is in fact a woman was murdered. Is it the daughter who hears voices or the greedy husband whose first wife died under similar circumstances and the police where he was from in Connecticut did nothing.

The Wahlbeg part holds up far better than the Selleck story. But the overall quality is dragged down.

Totally idiotic

Warning: Spoilers
The writers attempt to liven up a banal plot about a greedy husband by adding the victim's daughter who hears the voice of God telling her about the murder. In case just hearing the voice of God isn't already immersion breaking enough, it turns out God's pretty inconsistent with the clue drops. The first time, God just straight up tells the girl: Quick, your mother is being murdered!", but the second time, God decides to make it a little trickier by giving just the word "Berlin". Why? I guess the Lord works in mysterious ways ...

"Surely there will be some kind of rational explanation," I thought to myself early in the episode.

Later in the episode, I thought, "Surely there will be some kind of tenuous, flimsy explanation."

Right up until the credits rolled, I sat there waiting for something, but no, when it was all said and done, the police just solved a crime on the basis of a hallucination. Perhaps they should classify this show as a fantasy instead of a police procedural.

below usual standard

My wife and I have really enjoyed the first two seasons of Blue Bloods, but, while the mystery was okay in this episode. the parts regarding Catholicism were really dreadful. Didn't anyone do some serious research for this episode? Canonization begins, not with miracles, but with a careful examination of a person's entire life for virtues -- heroic virtues. Miracles are only the last stage. And, most importantly, the question is whether the Church is morally certain this person is in heaven because he or she loved God with all his or her heart, soul, mind, and strength. The portrayal of the bishop is appalling (he's only concerned with the benefits to the Church, not whether the priest was really a saint), and Selleck's comments take a typically jaundiced view of the Church as a merely human institution (and not a particularly attractive one). And the parts about prayer . . . ugh. This show has had such an attractive portrayal of a close, warm family enlivened by faith -- what a pity that this episode goes so badly offtrack. Next time, the writers really need to consult someone who knows something about the religion they are portraying.

Disingenuous depiction of process for sainthood
andrewdoran2 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The writers and producers might have taken five minutes to research the Catholic Church's process for canonization online before shooting this episode. Christopher Hitchens, who was called as a witness by the Church in the canonization process of Mother Theresa, was fairer than this program -- and he was perhaps the foremost atheist in the English- speaking world at the time of his death. What a bunch of rubbish.

There is no shortage of anti-Semistim, Islamophobia, and Christophobia in the world today. All of this stems from ignorance. If atheists don't care to have their skepticism mis-characterized by others in the public square, they should go to greater lengths to avoid errors in their work.

The writers need to do their homework or should be replaced

When is Hollywood going to stop depicting Catholics as though we're still in the '50's ? I don't know even any IRISH Catholic family that looks and acts like these people. Looking to verify a miracle for canonization ? Are you serious ?? And Frank thinks the priest is a lefty ? It was so stupid I shut it off. Insulting to Catholics, insulting to those who opposed Viet Nam - just frigging SUCKED !At this rate I hope it gets canceled. Wahlberg's the tough guy cop/brother/husband is getting on my nerves and his partner, playing yet another damaged Catholic, is wearing thin. There are too many characters on this show to do justice to them all. Len Cariou, a great actor, is just wasted here. Selleck, even with a dye job is only about 10 years Cariou's junior - hard to buy into the generational family concept.Seriously, these writers need to do their homework or should be replaced
