The Fist Press Conference

Dexter is at the beach with Harrison watching Brother Sam baptizing Nick. He receives a call from Debra to go to a crime scene and when he arrives, he sees mannequins and body parts on the top of horses. Soon Mike Anderson notes that they are representing the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". Dexter finds a piece of paper with a number in the eye of the victim and he and Debra investigate the body of the seven snakes victim and find another piece of paper in the intestines. The killer receives the nickname "Doomsday Killer". Debra has her first press conference and she believes that she did not go well. Harrison goes on emergency surgery of appendix. Masuka discovers that Ryan has stolen the hand of the Ice Truck Killer to sell it in Internet. Gellar finds Travis with a waitress in bed and When Travis awakes, he has a surprise.

"A Horse of a Different Color" shows situations that are different from what were first thought. Dexter believes in science but when Harrison is in danger, he shows a different attitude regarding faith. Debra believes that she did not go well in her first press conference, but she realizes that the audience and Marshall enjoyed. Masuka believed that Ryan was interested on him but he finds that he was lured by her. The charismatic Brother Sam is one of the best characters of this season. My vote is nine.

Apocalypse now

Dexter has brought Harrison to a baptism ceremony Brother Sam is performing. The converted ex-con wants to know Dexter's opinion, which is not exactly what was expected. Dexter is interrupted in the middle of the conversation. Four horses have appeared on a busy street bearing dummy riders stuffed with body parts. All the animals' heads were painted with the symbols that appeared on the body of the fruit vendor.

The new detective that joined the force, Mike Anderson, makes a connection to the book of revelations, in which the four horsemen of the apocalypse figure prominently. Deb, who has come to the scene, directs Quinn and Batista to get information. Dexter is puzzled by the way the man has been cut in such a rough way. Masuka is under the impression the body was cut in different pieces with what appears to be some kind of sword.

Maria LaGuerta has scheduled a news conference that she will conduct, but her boss, Tom Mathews wants Deb to be in charge. A bit of fashion advice is given by Mike Anderson, a man that dresses impeccable, even for the torrid Miami weather, when he points at the way Deb is still wearing clothes that do not go with her new position. The news conference has a shaky start because Deb, is not completely at ease and says a four letter word in her answer to a reporter. Chief Mathews loves the way Deb handled herself.

Dexter is not totally convinced Brother Sam is real. He calls the repair shop to get his car serviced again. But he cannot find fault with the man. When Harrison runs a high fever, Dexter takes him to the hospital. It is a case of a rupture appendix and the boy will be fine, but Dexter suffers from the anxiety of not knowing what is happening to his son. Unexpectedly, Brother Sam arrives at the hospital's room where Dexter and Deb are awaiting the results of the operation. Sam wants Dexter to pray and be hopeful. When the surgeon comes out with the good news, Dexter says "Thank God", something that puts a smile on Brother Sam.

Because of the religious nature of the crime, the police try to talk to fanatics that might have something to do with the case. The name Gellar has been linked as a possibility, so Quinn and Batista are sent to speak to him. Unknown to them, Gellar and Travis are having lunch at a restaurant. Travis is clearly attracted to the friendly waitress serving them. He wants to take her on a date, something Gellar is opposed to. Travis takes the young woman out, ending in bed. Gellar takes the girl away so she is not in bed when Travis wakes up.

The police are called to a weird scene where dead fish are found in a circle. Dexter notices blood nearby. He follows the trail, that leads to a hothouse where the young waitress is suspended in the air. One of the cops knocks down the mechanism and the woman's jugular vein is cut, resulting in her bleeding to death. Dexter spots Travis in the distance. He realizes the man is somewhat connected.

A great episode in one of the most original crime series on television. Written by Lauren Gussis and directed by John Dahl, the chapter deals with a lot of different ideas that have a religious nature, which is the theme of this season. There are a lot of references to the bible as well as Dexter natural skepticism in matters of the sort. The evil doers are hiding behind a smokescreen of righteousness while killing innocent victims. Good acting all around under Mr. Dahl's direction.

Sick Rituals

This episode begins with Dexter, he is at Sam his ritual organized for Nick. Bodyparts have been placed on horses, this is a new signal of the killer. Dexter found a code in the eye of the corpse, also one in the intestines. The name of the new killer: The Doomsday Killer. Harrison is ill. Vince discovered that Ryan stole the prosthetic arm of The Ice Truck Killer case, Vince sends Ryan away. Harrison has been brought to the hospital, his blind intestine has been ruptured. Angel and Quinn are smoking weed in the car. Debra gave her first press conference. Travis has a date with Erin, they also have sex. Harrison his operation has been succeeded. Angel has a lead on Gellar, Travis his boss. Erin got killed by a sick ritual. Nice episode of Dexter Season 6, Debra had a cruel first day as Lieutenant. Erin died in a creepy ritual, it is getting creepier an creepier.

To the reviewer before me, you are watching a show about a brutal serial killer who also works with the police and you complain about graphic violence? It's like watching The Walking Dead and complaining about zombies! why don't you watch Glee? No graphic violence there, I promise...

I think this episode was amazing. As always, the quality of the whole show is superb, the dialog, how events slowly unfold, the casting is great specially Brother Sam and Anderson, both really promising this season. The religious theme is a great choice considering Dexter's "hobby", and that Harrison is getting older and he can't let his dark passenger influence H's life.

I really like Debra as Lieutenant, everyone expects her to work fine at the job, since she always does, and is compromised to the extreme, but it is nice to see how she handles these challenges.

Only complaint

I've made my complaints clear in other reviews. This season, up to now, is the worst of all six. However, it does have a long way to go yet, so things can (and should) get a lot better.

Nevertheless, my point here is another one. I'm an atheist, and always interested in good and well constructed debates about faith and religion. I also fully understand Dexter skepticism and, on the other hand, his leaning toward a god idea, with all that is going on in his life (though Harry's reminding him he already speaks to an imaginary fatherly figure was quite funny).

Finally, my point is: I was really disturbed when I learned what The Chronicles of Narnia was all (or partially) about. The lion is a metaphor to god. I do hope that, in Dexter, the main character's development does not lead him to conversion, only to show he is then more humane. It's not only because of my beliefs, but if the point of the season is this (after we take the action and the religious discussions out), it is really bound to be the worst (and I'll not say "least good") season of Dexter.

Killer with faith

This is becoming the weirdest Fargo crossover... but not a bad episode. Debra is settling in as a lieutenant and Dexter spends more time getting to know Brother Sam and thinks more about God - which is a foreign concept to him. We see the doomsday killers' relationship as well. Slightly twisted and controlling but we will see how that plays out as well. The overarching topic of faith is present all over the episode and so far it's been interesting. How would Dexter reconcile his actions with the introduction of faith and belief system?

Graphic violence versus imagination, thoughtful Brother Sam, no god complex, surprising investigation and captivating evolution

Poor girl. Her violent death was specially enduring to watch considering she looked so pretty and seemed so nice. It reminded me of The Trinity Killer first cut in the bathtub. What was the point of showing it when they decided not to reveal how they dismantled the runner ? I'm not sure what their intention was but in my opinion the episode would have been better without it. Graphic violence is such a lazy way to shock the audience when they could have used the characters to decrypt the crime scene. It would have left what really happened to our imagination, making Gellar and Travis plan even more evil. However the mistake Deb and her team made was what triggered the mechanism and the first thing I wanted to do was to rewrite the scene and save the girl. As for Travis I wonder why he was there. To easily get caught ? He probably had remorse so let's hope he'll find a way to free himself from Gellar's control because for the moment he's only a puppet. In fact I'm surprised they have already a lead on them so it seems this season should be quite different from the others…

Brother Sam confirmed the high impact it should have on Dex. The character is well designed because he made mistakes and found salvation when he saw the light, a sign he interpreted as divine. In fact his story really surprised me because it's quite similar to Dex's one. They both had father issues and it's only recently that he questioned Harry's code. As for a sign I think it was Lumen but apparently he forgot all about her, damn writers. That's why I was so surprised they actually mentioned Cody and Astor. It's disappointing the second isn't featured yet considering her role in season 5 was interesting. As for the surgery arc I didn't like how it was handled. What about covering doctors god complex ? I wasn't asking them to both summon John Locke and Jack Shephard for a new Science versus Faith epic battle but things should have been more psychological. At Dex calling Sam a friend was reminiscent of Miguel, implying that he could actually be not what he seems. Last but not least what surprised me the most was that he cracked the two numbers code in front of everyone when he used to keep all discoveries for himself to catch the killers first. I suppose it's related to Deb's new career but in all cases it's definitely a good thing because he's slowly learning team work, even he didn't tell anyone about the two potential killers. He cried, he saved Lumen, he almost prayed… His evolution is definitely captivating to follow ! From monster to mere mortal ?

(S6. E4) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 6 Episode 4 ''A Horse of a Different Color'': Episode 3 was good and I gave it a rating of 8.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. If you put your faith into the wrong things, bad things will happen. Harrison is sick and needs surgery, that sucks! Lol, Batista and Quinn smoking weed was funny. Brother Sam's story is actually pretty interesting, no surprise that he was in jail with such a story. Like father like son. Did Dex just pray? That's new. He is about to lose his son so it makes sense. Travis seems to be a very confused man and James seems to be a manipulator and also a father figure to Travis. Sam is right you cant prove that God doesn't exist. Dex is smart enough to know that. Lol Angel and Quinn are high af. The Doomsday killers have wild imagination. Overall a really good episode, my rating is 8.8/10.
