Exclusive: Netflix is heading to the Alaskan wilderness in its latest competition series.
The streamer has ordered Outlast, an eight-part series, that comes from Jason Bateman’s Aggregate Films and Nomad Entertainment.
It marks the first unscripted series from Ozark star Bateman, which has a long-running, first-look deal with the streamer.
Outlast, which will launch in 2023, follows 16 “lone wolves”, who must outlast each other in the Alaskan wilderness in an attempt to win 1 million dollars. There is only one rule in this cut throat game: they must be a part of a team to win.
The eight-part series is one of Netflix’s most ambitious unscripted competition series to date.
Bateman and Aggregate Films are behind a number of Netflix series and films in addition to Ozark. Bateman is directing FBI thriller feature Dark Wire and is attached to star alongside Jude Law series Black Rabbit, which is in development.

Smokey and the Bandit, the 1977 comedy classic that cemented the superstardom of the late Burt Reynolds, will soon make an audacious attempt to smuggle itself back into the pop culture picture, with a television series now in the works at Universal Content Productions.

This is an attention-getter: Smokey and the Bandit is being remade for television by Halloween’s David Gordon Green and Brian Sides.
The pair are developing the adaptation of the 1977 Burt Reynolds movie with Ucp and Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door.
The movie, which was directed by stuntman Hal Needham, follows Reynolds’ Bo ‘Bandit’ Darville and Jerry Reed’s Cledus ‘Snowman’ Snow, two bootleggers attempting to illegally transport 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta as they are being chased by Jackie Gleason’s county sheriff Buford T. Justice.
The series is described as an epic adventure of family, small-town crime, unlikely heroes, legend and legacy. Inspired by the genre of 70s and 80s drive-in double-features, the series explores the crossroads where humble realities meet those larger-than-life, all in a blast of tailpipe exhaust.

There are certainly some elements of Alaska: The Last Frontier that are faked and some that are genuine, but usually with shows such as this it’s a matter of opinion until the truth has been revealed and the reality of it is laid bare. Too many reality shows suffer from a lack of realism, which is ironic really because the majority of them are trying to show what real life is like in one location or another. The problem however lies in the presence of the cameras and the production crew in the lives of those that are being put

Here is the latest spin on the reality-competition genre. ABC has set a premiere date for Castaways, which it describes as “testing the human need for companionship under extreme circumstances as each individual learns there are other castaways out there but are unaware of how many, their locations or when they will be rescued.”
The show premieres at 10 Pm Tuesday, August 7, after the Season 5 premiere of Bachelor in Paradise. Watch the first-look trailer above.
In what feels something like Survivor-meets-an unscripted Lost, Castaways follows 12 diverse individuals — “strangers torn from their ordinary lives,” the trailer stresses — as they’re dropped alone throughout various islets in Indonesia and challenged to survive among washed-up luggage, scattered resources and abandoned structures.
Logline continued: The only way to leave the remote islands is to persevere long enough to be rescued or to quit. As dramatic situations unfold on an expanse of islands in the South Pacific,...
