Peter Pan and the pirate guest

'Peter Pan and the Pirates' very quickly not only became one of my favourite animated shows but also one of my favourites ever. Of all the adaptations of 'Peter Pan', it's also my personal favourite.

All the characters are not only interesting but remarkably complex, especially Hook, even when not looking like Barrie's Hook all the character traits of the character are fully explored and expanded upon. The show is advantaged furthermore by good animation (with some exceptions here and there). Great music particularly the theme tune, one of the best of any animated 90s show. Remarkably good writing that had real maturity and a wide range of emotions rare in animated shows today. Gripping and imaginative stories that maintain the spirit of Barrie's source material while expanding on the themes, events and characterisation. And really excellent voice acting, for one of the most talented voice actors in the business and near-unequalled in villain roles Captain Hook contains some of the best work Tim Curry has ever done.

"The Pirate Who Came to Dinner" (brownie points go to anyone who can guess or knows what famous film title, that has been played on many times, the episode is a play of on) is another one of the enjoyable episodes while also being one of my least favourite 'Peter Pan and the Pirates' episodes. Not because it's bad, but the better, and even more so the best, are so good.

Its only real problem, but sadly it's a significant one, is the animation. Much of the time, the animation on 'Peter Pan and the Pirates' is terrific, some of the time it's uneven and sometimes not great. For me, while better-looking than the likes of "Count De Chauvin", "The Plucking of Short Tom" and especially "Evicted" the animation is not exactly great here. Some nice detailed backgrounds, but the colours are not as vibrant this time round, the fluidity is overdone that parts look muddled and lacking finesse and there are times where Hook looks odd (that may be just me though).

Sometimes the visuals and audio seemed out of sync with each other too.

Music however is a great mix of lively, haunting and lush, the theme tune immediately sticks in one's head and never leaves it.

Writing is as mature, intelligent and emotionally complex as one would expect, never feeling dumbed down for adults or too complicated for children. The story is gripping with a good deal of entertainment and tension in the character interplay. The conflict has been more thrilling in other episodes but works well considering Hook's physical state in the episode. The end outcome is foreseen before it actually happens but that doesn't stop the ending from being fun.

Have always loved the characters and how they interact, two of the best assets of 'Peter Pan and the Pirates'. All are true to character and are as interesting and engaging as ever.

Voice acting has yet to falter, Jason Marsden and Tim Curry are simply born for Peter and Hook, even if Curry has been better in other episodes when he can be full on sinister.

Overall, enjoyable but not one of my favourites of the show. 8/10 Bethany Cox
