I’m hesitant to outright recommend almost anything – books, movies, music, TV shows, and so on. Invariably someone acts on my recommendation, doesn’t like it, and blames me for the waste of their time and/or money. “It sucks, Ostrander”, they say, “and so do you!”
However, from time to time I encounter something I truly enjoy so I’ll share my enjoyment and you can decide if it’s something you want to try.
I’ve recently read the three novels in The Chronicles of Kazam (and really wish the fourth and final volume was available right now) by Jasper Fforde and had a wonderful time with them. Littleton, Colorado's Mile High Horror Film Festival is happening this weekend, and Devolver Digital Films has announced that a 75-minute bundle of ten horror shorts plucked from the fest is now available nationwide on VOD.

Independent film label Devolver Digital Films has formed a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Alamo Drafthouse’s Mile High Horror Film Festival to release Mile High Horror Shorts, a compilation of top short films from the annual festival. The 75-minute collection of screamers and slashers has been curated by the festival’s director, Timothy Schultz, and is available this month on cable Video On Demand. The broadcast marks a milestone for the medium of short film, a format that rarely sees commercial distribution and has never achieved a nationwide VOD release.

San Diego's Horrible Imaginings is teaming up with the Viscera Film Festival to celebrate Women in Horror Recognition Month with a two-night event that starts off with a theatrical presentation of monologues and continues with an international horror shorts program that includes our own Heather Wixson's "Paper Rock, Scissors".
It all happens Wednesday, February 8th, and Saturday, February 11th, and both nights will be free of charge! The venue is the Tenth Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre, 930 Tenth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. If you can make it, be sure to RSVP at the Facebook Event Page.
The monologues are entitled "Identifiable Faces" and feature the creative and acting talents of Kiki Yeung, Clarissa Thibaux, Nzinga Asantewa, and Lauren Holliday.
Following the live theater and a brief intermission with light refreshments, the short films will begin! Here's the list so far:
