Very Powerful Star Wars Canon Right Here! Even With the Prequel Baggage!
Overlords is one of the strongest episodes of the series. It explores the concept of The Force as something meagerly touched-upon, until Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka come across this planet, known as Mortis, where The Force is incredibly strong: powerful like nothing else in the known universe. Upon discovering this odd planet, the three meet these two mystical beings simply known as 'The Son' and 'The Daughter': two force-sensitive beings who may be as old as the galaxy itself.

This episode tells a Force story that the rest of the show hasn't seen since. The following two episodes make up 'The Mortis Trilogy' and this trilogy can even be a substitute for The Prequel Trilogy; if you desire that substitution. This is powerful storytelling in animated television, and this is one of many high-points for The Clone Wars series.

This episode alone compliments the things that make Star Wars great and rich with lore, and it's doesn't need to be one of the saga movies to be just as impacting.

Powerful, strong and thoughtful.

The Mortis Arc of episodes (Overlords, Altar of Mortis, Ghosts of Mortis) was the first true example of how Clone Wars could go beyond the films and bring incredible new things into the Star Wars canon. It was already a good series up to this point, but these episodes really showed how it could be great.

Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka end up on a mysterious, ethereal world that seems innately connected to The Force. There, they meet a group of individuals who seem to personify different aspects of The Force, being Light, Darkness and Balance. From there, they must find a way off of the world, while also forced to confront their inner fears and regrets.

The Mortis Arc delivered some of the best visuals the show had to offer, along with new concepts that really added to the Star Wars mythos. The mystery of Mortis is intriguing, while the lore it adds is breathtaking and thought-provoking. It also stands on its own, meaning you could just watch these episodes without watching the main series and still get a lot out of it.

Forcefully Fascinating

My reaction on my first viewing of this was a huge "Wow!".

This was kind of shocking in how it added previously unheard of ancient lore into the story of the force, the Jedi and the Sith. Bold and striking storytelling which is hugely admirable.

A distress signal is picked up in an ancient code which when followed leads Obi Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka to an unknown world called Mortis. There they meet 3 beings who reveal themselves as ancient force wielders - the Father, the Son and the Daughter. The Father predates all Jedi and Sith and has power over both light and dark sides of the force. He has taken a role keeping balance in the force. The Son is the embodiment of the dark side and the Daughter is the light.

The Father wants to explore if Anakin is indeed the chosen one who can bring balance and replace him as he is dying. Anakin is forced to take a test.

The story is creating a rich fantasy origin story giving background to the force. It also adds to the story of Anakin (and in turn, Rey) who wields both dark and light which is dangerous but allows greater power and potential to create balance.

It is quite a lot to add and is very surprising and challenging.

The depth of storytelling and exploration of Anakin's character and destiny is utterly spellbinding. Everything is done cleverly, powerfully and exudes class.

This is a real plus to the canon and an astounding episode.

My rating: 10/10.

Awesome introduction to one of the shows most unique story arcs!

Wow this episode just felt completely different from anything shown to us up till this point! Its nice to see the creators are not affraid to get creative! This is one of the series strengths! Expanding excisting lore and building upon storylines we already know from the movies! We even get some nice foreshadowing! This episode is also the best looking in terms of visuals, in this season.. by FAR!

The most important story arc in all of Star Wars
NCritz_9 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Mortis was the first time I truly felt emotion for this show. The first time I watched this, I realized how important it was to the whole story of Star Wars. It solidifies the fact that Anakin truly was the Chosen One. Not Luke, not Rey, Anakin Skywalker. This arc is drenched in foreshadowing for so many events that'll happen in the show and the movies.

This episode in general was a really good start to the arc, Anakin having to learn more about his destiny and balance the Force with the Son and Daughter. Ahsoka and Obi Wan also have their own small glimpses into their future, Ahsoka experiences a vision of her future self and a warning that staying with Anakin will eventually lead to her death, a warning that she does listen to in the end. Obi wan gets a force ghost vision from Qui Gon telling him about Anakin and his destiny.

Overall one of my favorite episodes in this show ever.

Overlords

This is the episode that took the galaxy in directions never imagined. Not only does this feel completely unique to the show, but the episode also feels like an embrace of the old legends in the "Star Wars" franchise, finally diving into what the Force is and what it can do. The newly introduced characters are intriguing and their interactions with our heroes give so much development that we did not know they needed. The writing for the episode was spectacular and it does stand out as one of the show's very best. I remembered this arc, but I don't think I ever saw this episode fully, so I had a huge blast seeing something familiar, yet feeling like I discovered a new corner of "Star Wars." Whether or not, it was great experiencing the mythology of this arc again.

"Balance is found in the one who faces his guilt."
Harri_10 July 2023
There are a few plot holes scattered throughout and the pacing may be a bit slow but 'Overlords' gives audiences one of the most creatively writing and thrilling episodes of the series so far. The whole premise around the guardians of the force is mystical, how they were able to turn off a lightsaber and touch its burning light is a highlight for me.

Additionally, the addition of Qui Jon Gin is fantastic, and the discussions that each character has with their imagination is definite character development.

To summarise, the episode may not be perfect but it ties in the themes of destiny and mystery to give audiences a great experience.
