Filling the Emptiness
claudio_carvalho2 July 2014
Debra interviews the candidates to the position of Nanny for Harrison and among several weird persons, she finds the skilled nurse Sonya that seems to be the perfect nanny. The Latin police officer Cira Manzon is assigned to help Debra in the investigation of the case of the beheaded victim. Quinn still suspects of Dexter and contacts the FBI. Dexter gets close to the dead animal sanitation agent and serial-killer Boyd Fowler and plans to eliminate him. However things go wrong as initially planned and Dexter finds in an unexpected situation at Fowler's house.

"Practically Perfect" is another great episode of this promising Fifth Season. Dexter finds a nanny for Harrison and with his vacation on the Metro Police Department, he is able to plan to eliminate a dangerous serial-killer. But the suspicion of Quinn will certainly bring problems to him. Angel is in trouble with his bar fight. Julia Styles is a promising cameo of this show. My vote is nine.

Dead animal collector

Warning: Spoilers
Deb and Dexter are interviewing babysitters. A few women offer their views in how to care for Harrison, it is Sonya, an Irish woman that clearly is the best suited for the infant. It only takes a second after Sonya picks up the baby to convince Dexter she is the one, although Deb is not completely convinced.

Dexter is after Boyd Fowler, the animal cleaner, because deep down he knows he ties in with the murder of the woman in the barrel. He makes contact with his target at an outdoors cafe, where both chat amiably. Boyd even suggests a job will be available if Dexter is agreeable. Dexter must go looking for places in which he will take his next victim, finding a remote abandoned tourist center.

Deb is investigating the murder of the woman whose severed head tied it to a cult called 'santa muerte'. With the help of the cop that was on the scene, Cira, she goes to the place where religious items are sold, trying to see if the icon they found at the crime area was bought from the place. The owner is reluctant to talk, but Deb senses he is holding information because of fear. Later on, this man will be found dead, his head severed like the first victim.

Maria LaGuerta receives a visit from an Internal Affairs officer. It has to do with the savage beating Angel gave the off duty cop he met at a bar, who dared talk bad of his wife. The IA man informs her in addition to the injuries, Angel kicked the fallen man, something that is punishable with prison. Maria questions her husband; Angel explains the reason for his action.

Dexter is able to get Boyd's attention. He brings him to the area where he plans to kill him, but in a surprise movement, Boyd shoots him. Both men are taken to a hospital for observation. As it turns out, Dexter was only wounded with a dart, so there was no major problem. Dexter goes to Boyd's house to prepare the premises. He surprises Boyd and while killing Boyd, he notices a young woman, who has witnessed the operation. Running after her, reveals the scared girl has been badly injured, as she collapses in his arms.

Directed by Ernest Dickerson, who has contributed to the program before, and written by Many Coto, another frequent collaborator, the episode sets the stage for what will follow. The mysterious young woman is the key to the 2010 season in which Julia Stiles is the guest star. "Dexter" is one of the best series on television. Michael C. Hall shines as the killer with an agenda to eliminate the evil people he encounters. The regular cast, by now, has perfected their ensemble playing that is a joy to watch. Fans of the genre have reason to rejoice.

Twisted and intense story, exciting arcs, inaccurate morality, bottoming "BatisGuerta", refreshing humor, The cliffhanger
igoatabase11 October 2010
The X-Files had its monster of the week, Dexter has its monster of the season. When the first leaf of autumn fell I anticipated a new nemesis for our wicked serial killer but even after Hello Bandit I wasn't sure about it. But with a powerless Dex it seems the writers have found a refreshing way to slice up their words. Indeed like in Hello Bandit the story featured a few twists that should definitely put viewers on the verge of their seats. From the dead animals cleaner to Quinn's obsession all arcs are exciting. They all developed in perfect sync, including the one involving Deb and her new female partner. However I can only question her morality considering what she said about a corpse. She should know better after what happened in season 3. I can't even believe Jennifer Carpenter read her lines without reporting the issue to the writers ! An other issue was the return of the Batista-LaGuerta mumbo jumbo. I naively thought that it would end with their marriage but they're back for more. This time we had to endure a scene that exceeded a minute ! To tell the truth I dozed off. It was just painless and dead boring. Moreover we need more Masuka ! He was so funny toying in Dex's lab last week. But it was a minor con as the humor was dominant for once. I guess it's the best way to picture how tragic his life has become. An other element that stroke me was the bloody appearance of the guest star name in the opening credits. Be prepared for the unpredictable as its first scene was a first for the show !

A surprising ending...for me as a viewer

Warning: Spoilers
My reaction to seeing Julia Stiles in the final scene...yuck...uhhhhh...yuck....dammit. She absolutely ruined it. How long is she in this for???? How long do I have to put up with her Julia Stiles ness.

Yeah...this episode is pretty on par for Dexter. Just slowly moving on down. I remember watching this...and Breaking Bad around the same time. I liked Dexter...until I saw how much better writing and story telling can be. Then I realized how sub par Dexter actually is.

It's fine. It's definitely watchable. But it is on in the backround stuff as opposed to edge of your seat...what the hell is gonna happen next, like in Breaking Bad.

It isn't the material...it is what is done WITH the material that makes all the difference.

S5.E3 - Dex's Emptiness [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 5 Episode 3 ''Practically Perfect'' (S5. E3): Episode 2 was great and I gave it a rating of 8.8/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. I hope this babysitter isnt insane and will take care of Harrison so that Dex can do his other activities. Lol, will Dex become like Fowler, picking up dead animals? I hope this kill will be somewhat gory. The babysitter looks like a decent person. Angel and Maria are so cute together. I was used to seeing Cody and Astor, I guess we wont be seeing them anymore. I wonder who is that serial killer who cuts off the heads of his victims. Wow, both Dex and Fowler are passed out? Things just got complicated. Wow what a cliffhanger, that woman saw what Dexter did to Fowler. Overall a great episode, my rating is 9/10.

Dexter will
dannylee-780828 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. New babysitter for Harrison 2. Deb can't speak Spanish 3. Dex gets spotted while killing

Quinn and Deb try to figure out their relationship - but Deb most likely won't take the easy way because of her dislike of her fathers past. There is a conflict brewing in regards to Angel but to me it feels a little forced because the writers couldn't think of a conflict to present. So far, the major conflict in this season is the brutal killing that involves beheadings. Hopefully that one leads to something interesting. Dexter finds that killing does not fill his void. While this may seem like a terrible thing, it shows us that there were more parts of Dexter that was human than hed like to admit.

Practically watchable
skay_baltimore6 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely...without a doubt...BORING as all get out. Good grief. How can a show about a serial killer possibly be THIS BORING?!! Well, for one...there's no real "big bad" antagonist as of yet.

Second: NOBODY really CARES about the Batista-LaGuerta pseudo-relationship.

Third: Quinn is arguably THE MOST BORING of all the "regulars".

Fourth: Nothing really much to see when it comes to the weekly quick kill character.

Fifth: You KNOW in advance that a main character is NOT going to get "busted". So this whole thing with the sketch of Dexter is nothing but a red herring. In fact, most of the show now is little more than a bunch of red herrings. And they're really starting to smell. Bad.
