YES, WE RENT BOATS
nogodnomasters16 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Six young cleavage infested adults travel to Maine to have some fun and to meet Stephen King. While they are there they meet people who are similar to characters in the King novels. As the kids are killed off one by one, the film becomes a whodunit that doesn't live up to its potential.

I kept waiting for the film to get good as it started out with great potential. It wavered between a slasher film and a spoof, never finding its groove. The dialogue never made it. The whole boating scene was a waste.

Parental Guide: F-bomb in music. No sex. Brief black and white photo nudity. Male rear nudity.

But you sure can kill this
kosmasp22 November 2013
Pretty sure quite a lot of you will. By either ignoring it completely or just refusing to watch it or maybe even writing bad reviews after watching it. While it's obvious that the filmmakers try to make a fun movie within the slasher genre, they are not the first (nor the last to do so), but unfortunately fail.

The actors try their best (I guess), but the story and the coincidences pile up and nothing really fits. The jokes are mostly fail (not even miss), which is also not contributing to any enjoyment. You might give it an extra point for trying and because you like independent movies very much, but if you are fair, you have to admit, that it doesn't really reach any standard (low budget and all included into the judgment). On the other hand, there might be a few who actually enjoy this. Good for them

not funny and nothing to offer on all aspects

Being promoted over here by organizers of horror conventions I picked it up for almost no money. No money mostly means a bad flick but promoted by the geeks themselves I thought to give it a go.

Was I wrong, maybe for , sigh, Stephen King buffs this will be a must see because there are so many references to his books but for me what the hell was this. Again as so many flicks it started off rather okay, but once the main leads came in the horror was over. Sure, it's a horror flick because some moments were okay, killings done on-camera but it's the flick itself, in fact, the story that makes it a bit boring.

And then for the girls, yes you perverted Kleenexers, they are in the flick but what did the cover say, boob time, nah, don't believe it, not one boob is shown. Shown in bikini's that for sure but no nudity to spot and when one of the girls, the loaded one, says she wants to take a shower, the music turns into well you guess it, but nothing here too.

Why this flick is promoted as a must see and why it even over here has a 16 plus is a mystery for me. Common, even Vampire Diaries has more blood to shown.

I guess they should change the words on the back of the sleeve into It Was A Mistake To Pick This Up.

The trust of the innocent is the liar's most useful tool.

Warning: Spoilers
"People think that I must be a very strange person. This is not correct. I have the heart of a small boy. It is in a glass jar on my desk." Stephen King

I wasn't expecting a great script, good acting or direction or even groundbreaking fx. But just at least one of three things that can save a movie like this and make it great or just plain fun.

Humor. Check? No, i'm afraid nothing funny happens in You Can't Kill Stephen King. There are attempts of humor, but all fails.

Violence. Some original killings, good practical effects or a high body count. Check? Well, not at all. The body count in this movie is low and the the killings are just lame, nothing really interesting in the practical effects arena.

Nudity. Check? There are three great looking girls in the movie. They're hot as hell. Yet, no nudity, just light nudity, the kind you can see in a Disney beach movie (there is such thing? i don't know, i don't care).

All in all, it's a very bad flick, not a single second of fun. It's well made, has a nice HR photography, but that's it.

Unless you really into HR photography or like to see great looking girls in bikinis... don't watch this sh*t.

And, by the way, i don't think anybody involved in this movie was a real Stephen King fan.

This is extremely cheaply produced, badly written, horribly acted and yawn-inducing trash.
Zorus3 August 2013
I've watched the first fifteen minutes or so of the movie and then skipped through the rest since I didn't like what I saw. This is extremely formulaic crap. I guess that would be fine for some if there were some production values to it. After all, personally I really like movies like Wrong Turn and such. This however is extremely cheaply produced, badly written, horribly acted and yawn-inducing trash. It is however miles beyond anything Monroe Mann has done thus far. So I'll give him that. Be warned though, this is not in the so-bad-that-it's-good category. This is definitely in it's-really-bad territory.

Have a think before you watch this.

Now i'm all for a good comedy/thriller/horror. a "good" one. These types of movies only really target a certain type of audience, If you're into scary movie, scream and any other spoof movie that has been made then this is the movie for you! BUT if you enjoy a good, quality, meaningful movie with real actors and actresses. Look somewhere else. I am a fan of Stephen King and unfortunately made the mistake of getting this movie out, fortunately I work at a video store so I waited until the end of my shift and took it out for free. I wouldn't waste a cent on this and I'm sure the producers did not spend a cent making it. To be fair though, I did not watch all of it and there was a reason for that. SO, are you the kind of person that likes low budget movies and actors that nobody knows?

Just Stupid, Not Funny
siavash_khavarnejad14 August 2018
This movie seemed promising but it is just stupid, awful acting and an awful script and awful movie production but not in the fun, funny way you would want in a movie like this. Too bad, it could have been great with a fun premise like this.

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It was boring, and stuff like that. Sure there were some characters from his books, but playing the sound that you hear when Jason Voorhee's shows up It was there that i shut off the movie. I was like, Ok, none of Stehpen Kings books or movies had anything to do with the Friday The 13th movies.

Awful
traceybrown-promail4 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
In reply to the earlier poster, YES, acting does matter in any movie, be it horror, comedy, sci-fi, musical or whatever. Bad acting takes you out of the story and hinders belief. I would say it's especially important in horror, because there must be a lot of suspension of belief compared to some genres. I think true horror fans want their fave genre to be as respected as well-produced as others, and that means hiring actors who can act. I don't understand the idea of excusing bad acting or scripting or directing or production values because something is horror and not nordic noir! This was awful.

I was lured in by the premise of King-esque deaths, which is a great idea.

But disappointment ensued. How about, for example, (MILD SPOILER) the killer training a real wolf to sic on the black guy? That would have been inventive and made sense. Instead we get a run-of-the-mill slasher.

I reserve a BIG yawn, too, for movies that purport to be parodies of cheesiness, while using the 'parody' excuse to exploit certain things, ie, half-naked women. Parody only works if it's actually funny. This suffered from a horrendously bad script. Honestly, I found precisely nothing to like about this film.

Some reviewers clearly didnt understand the movie
redbeauty21200012 September 2019
This movie in no way shape or form has ANYTHING to do with actual horror or a Stephen King book/movie! Reviewing it negatively because you do not understand that is unfair. It's a goofy, campy, supposed to be lame movie. Do people really not understand that? Ugh. It was a good movie for what it was supposed to be. Not liking it because you thought it was an actual Stephen King film is your own fault. Heres a hint to help in the future. If Stephen King does not have a book called You can't kill Stephen King then its probably not his movie/book!

You Can't Kill Stephen King: Better than you'd imagine
Platypuschow29 November 2018
You Can't Kill Stephen King is a curiously titled comedy horror with the general slasher sub genre and it's actually not bad.

It tells the story of a group of friends who travel to Maine but as per the genre get picked off one by one by a mysterious assailant.

Its independent yet it looks great. It's independent yet the soundtrack is excellent. It's independent yet the unknown cast are fantastic. It's independent yet the writing is above par.

It breaks all the usual movie stereotypes and conventions and left me fairly impressed. To be clear it has its fair share of flaws hence the not overwhelming rating but for what it is this is a passable little affair that demonstrates how talented those involved are.

It's silly, it has a very limited spectrum but there is fun to be had here.

The Good:

Great soundtrack

Very above par cast

The Bad:

Ultimately flawed

Doesn't really flow

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Maine is so white there aren't even black bears

279. You Can't Kill Stephen King.
tfminfl14 October 2018
A group of the oldest looking teenagers I've ever seen decide to head up to Maine, to go party and for a chance to meet the town's most famous civilian, Stephen King. You may have guessed its a horror-comedy, and is closer to a Friday the 13th to Castle Rock, but it has its moments, like pulling into a gas station called 'Wicked Good Gas', whole bunch of King references and some hot women, well one looks a little too much like a Paris Hilton and Rory Culkin hybrid, it was kinda creepy, which was as scary as the movie got. It's worth watching to goof on... Filmbufftim on FB.

What idiot rated this pg-13? I started watching it with my granddaughter, and had to turn it off. Too bad...she likes scary movies, and I love Stephen King. It would have been fun to watch together.

What a B movie!
ttucker-3797520 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not just a B movie, but they let you know it's a B movie in the setup. Love the introductions at the beginning. If you are expecting an award winning movie with top of the line casting, you will be disappointed. If you just go with the flow it's not a bad movie.

Of course it has the "token" black guy, 3 beautiful women, a nerd, a war hero, who seek to find the hidden lake house of author Stephen King. The local townsfolk all seem to have selective amnesia when the group starts asking too many questions. Oh, let's add the incompetence of the local police. Someone is picking off the 6 friends just like the plots from the 210+ Stephen King stories.

Dumb fun

Check your brain at the door and just enjoy the low budget 80's slasher goodness. If you have to pick apart plot holes, then you should skip this cause it has them in spades.

Budget horror comedy
RandomTard8 August 2022
This isn't actually too bad for a small budget movie. The story kind of works and it wasn't boring. The sounds could of been balanced better, at one point there was a song playing and it was just way too loud compared to the rest of the movie. It's basic stuff, just get it right. Also the ending was a little bit messy.

Not as bad as some claim.
d-alston4 April 2024
While this is not as witty as it probably hoped to be, this is not as bad as some here claim.

It seems to want to be something akin to the Scary Movie series, but doesn't reach those heights.

It's entertaining enough, though, if you want something harmless to pass the time.

Since this review is apparently - and for no sensible reason that I can guess - too short to qualify, I'll say it all again: While this is not as witty as it probably hoped to be, this is not as bad as some here claim.

It seems to want to be something akin to the Scary Movie series, but doesn't reach those heights.

It's entertaining enough, though, if you want something harmless to pass the time.

Very Fun
FilmWhore5524 August 2013
Saw this at theater in Tokyo with friends. I'm a big Stephen King fan and liked all the references placed through the story.

It was a good mix of horror film and comedy. There were multiple times I laughed out loud. The acting was really good. The scary scene in the woods was so scary I had to hide my eyes.

I also liked the music. Reminded me of The Shinning, one of my favorite movies. There were so many times I was able to say what movie lines and story points were from different Stephen King movies, and even books. Made the movie even more fun.

If you have the chance, see it. Very good film!

Better than expected
Mister-Creeper4 August 2013
With all the bad reviews and the low rating, I wasn't expecting too much going into this one - not to mention with a title like YOU CAN'T KILL STEPHEN KING, it seemed it never had a chance. BUT, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and found it quite entertaining.

I guess it helps being a huge Stephen King fan. So, if you're a fan of the man, Stephen King, then I recommend you ignore the low rating and bad reviews. It's much better than they would have you believe. It has a nice setting, a good mix of horror and comedy, above par acting and a story that strays from the usual run-of-the-mill slasher flick. Check it out!

A solid 7 out of 10 in my book.

Warning: Spoilers
I saw the premiere of this film at the Lewiston and Auburn film festival, out of all 80 movies this was the best. It had great quality, great actors, and kept me laughing throughout the film. Great for any Stephen King fan, or anyone just looking for a good laugh. I enjoyed the plot throughout the film, and at the end of it, I was wondering why this movie was not in a cinema or at least not on DVD. Not only is this a comedy film, but it was a pretty good horror film also. Towards the end of the film I was surprised to find out who the killer was. I am not quite the Stephan King fan, but I still understood what was going on throughout the film, but at the end of the day "You Can't Kill Stephen King"!! Soul Fist!

Stephen King would get a kick out of it
redandsparkly27 April 2014
O.K.the acting leaves something to be desired but what do you expect from a B-grade? I have paid to see worse movies that claimed to be A-grade.

I was pleasantly surprised to find it was not only Stephen King's famous stories getting the nod, but some of his lesser known stories as well.

If you are looking for a serious horror, do not watch this. If you are looking for an A-grade spoof along the lines of the Scary Movie franchise, again do not watch this.

If you are a King fan with a dark and slightly odd sense of humour as many of his fans do, this is right up your alley. How many stories can you find inside the story? I bet this was fun to make.,

Movie seems like it was made in the 90's when low budget movies were a lot better. It's not too serious about itself which makes it very entertaining. Give the movie a chance

Good effort, but could have done better
bowmanblue2 July 2014
I appreciate that 'slasher' films have become a bit 'old hat' these days. Most B-movies in the genre don't even try to come up with anything more original than some masked loon stalking and murdering a bunch of over-sexed teenagers. However, with 'You Can't Kill Stephen King' at least the makers tried to do something a little different.

For a start, they injected a little humour into the film. If you're looking for a straight horror, you won't find it here. It's definitely black comedy-horror all the way. They also try and play on the obviously clichés and conventions you'd expect to find within this type of film and go some way to turn them on their heads and exploit them.

For all that, the film is actually quite enjoyable, as a group of teens travel off the beaten path in small-town America in an attempt to track down their icon, none other than Stephen King himself. However, as you might expect, they start falling victim to an unseen assailant. And here lies the main problem... you can subvert a few clichés and add a bit of humour, but what you're left with is a pretty run-of-the-mill slasher film. Although some parts of it are fun, it still doesn't succeed in being different enough to really raise it above the thousands of similar movies (some of which are played straight, others not).

So, despite all the good intentions, all you have is an average slasher movie. If you're really desperate to see what is little more than a 'modern Friday 13th type film' then give this one a go, or if you're a die-hard fan of Stephen King you should enjoy all the homages to him. But, ultimately, there's not enough that's new here to really recommend this film over the countless others like it.
