For a Micro Budget Film, Not Bad
chicagopoetry2 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't a bad attempt for what must have been a micro budget. The editing is choppy, the sound is just horrible, and the acting is total crap save for Evalena Marie (everyone else is basically just reading lines, as if it wasn't in the budget to do retakes so the instruction was--just act in deadpan because how can anyone fail at deadpan). The plot is inconsistent and disappointing. It starts out with a time travel premise, moves on to a Leon The Professional premise, and ends with basically cheese vaguely alluding back to the time travel premise, a premise that if you ask me was wasted on the whole. And if you asked me what the plot was to be honest I couldn't really tell you.

So why am I saying it's not bad and why am I giving it a score of five? Well, for some reason it was watchable. I didn't watch it all in one sitting, granted. I watched it in three sittings. It's actually a bit long for such a low budget film, running about 100 minutes before the ending credits. Evalena Marie does give a pretty good performance even though she is surrounded by actors who never heard of the term emotion. And even though the biggest special effect here is her eyeliner running down her face, inconsistent as it is (in one scene it's running, the next it isn't, the next it is again), she's attractive enough to keep things going. And even though the sound effects could have easily be concocted by the Berberian Sound Studio it's kind of fun to see what they managed to scrounge up with their pennies. It's just the fact that movies like this one, movies that have such an obvious micro budget, usually are complete slop, save of course for Primer the best micro budget film of all. Serena and the RATTS at least makes a real attempt at saying, hey, if we had another twenty million dollars, this would REALLY be cool, so watch and pretend that we do.

Powerful

A POWERFUL thought provoking piece for the true fan of the art of film making. If you like creativity and sudden twists and turns, you will like this. If you like the Hollywood cookie cutter simplified glossy.... Well, This piece is not for everyone. But if you like to actually leave the theatre thinking about the context and sub context of what you just saw and actually WANT to watch it a second or third time.... That is what this movie does. The film seems a mix of Borne Identity meets Thunderball meets LaFemme Nakita meets Willie Wonka (I don't know.. it makes sense to me). It seamlessly blends the high paced energy with the fantastical. Evalena Marie has a face and acting chops that draw you in and makes you like her no matter WHAT she is doing. Jonathan Thomas makes for a great counter balance as these two actors land a formidable "One Two" Punch! My Suggestion for watching this film the first time is, sit back and let it all happen and believe in it. If the viewer does this, you will LOVE this film. It gets complicated but don't get TOO caught up in the details the first time through.. stay with it. In the end you will TOTALLY get it.. and then .. you will HAVE to watch it a second time and likely more. Kudos to the entire cast and crew of this film. A real thinker that continues to make you think long after the film is over. I look forward to seeing more from Director Kevin Barry and all of the actors in this film that really packs that punch!

Amazing debut movie by Kevin James Barry
ctblizzard28 April 2012
I just completed watching this film for the 3rd time and appreciate it more with each viewing. This debut effort by writer/director Kevin James Barry succeeds on many levels. The plot is complex and provides depth of character development. The acting is not only excellent but seemed to improve as the movie progressed giving the viewer a feeling of familiarity with the characters as the characters became familiar with each other. This created an emotional attachment to the lead character Serena (very well played by actress Evalena Marie). The film is very cleverly divided into three time segments starting with a flash to the future then to the past then to the end. So in essence this sci-fi action movie about time travel actually transported the viewer through time with the characters while leaving the viewer ultimately wondering if the characters in fact did their own time travel. I cannot wait to see future efforts by this director.

IT'S NOT EASY TO FIRE SOMEONE IN THIS BUSINESS

Warning: Spoilers
I loved the brilliant opening scene which in a matter of seconds establishes Serena's character and the quickly merging subplot. Serena wakes up disheveled, having her morning sugary cereal, cigarette, and PBR. On the TV, the news reports the creation of wormholes here on earth and the possibility of time travel. Bored with the greatest scientific discovery of all time, she flips the channel to watch old cartoons. Cue credits as she nonchalantly blocks a knife tossed at her by her boyfriend.

We quickly discover that the "black coats" or scientists create a plan to go back in time to kill Hitler when he was 10 years old, to make the world a better place. Serena is a hit-girl. Her boss wants her and the "RATTs" (Renegades Against Time Travel) to stop them, because someone other than Hitler would have took his spot and maybe done a better job against the west.

The film at this point moves on disjointedly by design as past events merge with the present in the form of flashbacks so that the original plot seems lost. It had some slow scenes and confusing scenes and it isn't until the end when the Boss (Jonathan Thomson) explains the plot, that we can appreciate the film. And I didn't see it coming as I missed the subtle clues.

Evalena Marie did a good job in the title role. Unfortunately much of the supporting cast were stiff by comparison.

Clearly this film is not for everyone. Those who enjoyed "Primer" and the absurdity of time might find this film interesting...or not.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.
