I know what you did last Scott Summers.

I've decided to review these animated spin offs from "The Boys" as individual episodes, rather than as a season as they appear like they'll be different in tone and style from each other.

A baby (Jenny Yokobori) is being tested within the Vought by mild mannered scientist Simon (Ben Schwartz). As the baby shows no sign of superhuman powers, Simon discovers that she is due to be terminated. Unable to live with this he tries to rescue her, at which point her lethal laser beam eyes first manifest. She is unable though to control the power and carnage ensues as she gets loose into the city.

There are two big references for this episode. One is rather obviously the film "Baby's Day Out" (it's right there in the title!). Scenes from that film, such as the construction site and zoo visit are homaged here, though with a gorier outcome than the original film has. The second refernce is more in the style of the animation. It's a loving tribute to Tex Avery and the Looney Tunes style. The colours are bright and vibrant, the lines are heavy, and the movements are exaggerated. The violence though is turned up, in line with what you might expect from "The Boys".

Though there are vocal credits, the short is entirely without dialogue and only has the odd noise to help tell the story - but it's clear what's happening throughout, and the story is just about amusing enough to keep you entertained.

Goo goo, ga g-AARGH!

'Laser Baby's Day Out (2022)' is a pastiche of 'Looney Tunes (1930 - 1969)' and other similar cartoons, with a rubbery aesthetic packed full of visual flair. It takes the often-seen 'baby going walkabout' premise and imbues it with a gleefully gory energy, making sure its slapstick violence always comes with a splash of blood. It's a surprisingly warm-hearted piece, thankfully devoid of any cruel subversions. It's also a fair bit of irreverent fun, which is its primary purpose. It pushes its style pretty much to the max and is enjoyable right the way through. 7/10.

A homage to Animaniacs' Mindy and Buttons, with a bit more love and a lot more carnage.
xfmand8 March 2022
Pretty much what I said in the title. The scientist's sentiments is a bit more heart-warming(*), but aside from that, if you like this episode, you'll find exactly the same sort of stuff in mini-series-with-in-a-series "Mindy and Buttons" which appears within Animaniacs. Well, except...

Only other difference, is being a spin-off from The Boys, this show had to add in lots of carnage for no particular reason other than they probably think it'll be popular with their audience. I'm not sure - maybe some people really think just more carnage is funny for it's own sake - personally, I can take it or leave it and lots of blood and guts doesn't virtually nothing for me in entertainment, neither good nor bad, which is why I think this episode isn't all that different than any episode of "Mindy and Buttons."

Ironically, because an adult human body holds about over a gallon of blood, the amount of blood spilled in this episode is actually unintuitively less than there should have been given that amount of carnage.

* - I'm being obscure about the "bit more heart-warming" not because it's complex by any stretch of the imagination, but rather, only so I don't have mark this review as "containing spoilers."

A solid Animaniacs tribute episode.
The Boys has kind of relished in cynical parodies of pop-culture, corporate culture and celebrity status too. And this episode's no different.

In the 1990s, shows like Animaniacs thrived off of its energetic visuals and music basically being its own actor from time to time. Laser Baby's Day Out is no different and is appropriately more vulgar with seeping into The Boys' grittiness, adding to the visual comedy. This episode isn't everyone's cup-of-tea exactly, but it does work on its own two feet just fine.

The Boys: Diabolical may be cashing in on stuff like The Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight, Halo Legends and Star Wars: Visions a little too close for some to look past, but it works to its advantage thanks to the show's multi-styles episodes.

This episode is definitely on the sillier side of things, though that's kind of the point here: it's the traditionally 'toony' one of the bunch.

Simple premise and competent presentation
RogerBorg5 March 2022
This is a clear homage to early Warner Brothers animation, delivered in nostalgic soft, grainy cell art style, with a decent orchestral score, and sans dialogue.

The premise is simply juxtaposing a cute baby with massive bloody violence. Clearly inspired by the Incredibles short Jack-Jack Attack, but taken to an extreme.

And it works well enough. There are a couple of nods to CURRENT_YEAR with a lesbian couple (where's the domestic violence?) and a tribute to Harambe (PBUH). Other than that, you can simply enjoy it for what it is: an uncomplicated, fun little nostalgia-pastiche that does exactly what it needs to do, and no more.

So far, the best episode.
mhorg20184 March 2022
Obviously an homage to WBs toons of the 40s, this was pretty funny until Seth Rogan, who isn't that funny, ruins the ending by going too overboard. Honestly, if I'd watched this series before the live action-I wouldn't have watched the live action.

A proper 90's comical cartoon with Boys violence blended/ copied scenes from Baby's Day Out
OnjiMooteDaMarle5 March 2022
A typical 90's cartoon or mostly the Tom & Jerry or Looney Toons type but with gore violence as in 'Boys' with Baby's Day Out scenes & moments. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Very funny and sweet first episode even if there are a lot of guts. The episode is very nice and entertains a lot while always maintaining a beautiful atmosphere of sweetness and fun.

Alright start to an Anthology Series.

For what it's worth, this episode was cute. I liked the art for some of the characters and the abundance of gore was just kinda boring tbh. Hope the next few episodes are good.

Great homeage to classic cartoons
stevenmonkeydishwasher24 March 2022
Definitely thought it was great for it's concept and we'll executed, set the stage for the blood and gore you'd expect from this concept. I'd say it's not completely original though, it's definitely been done before.

Just a sick mindless gorefest
truthbrarian10 March 2022
This animation of this show is actually not that bad I will say that. This is one of those situations where I feel really old or it is society that is wrong but the content of this episode is just incoherent and gratuitous for me.

Don't get me wrong I grew up on Elden Lied and Attack on Titan but those episodes had gripping and inventive narratives to go with their gore.

This is meant to be a Warner Bros cartoon but an exaggeration. I think people misunderstand about these cartoons, there is violence but there is actually no death, the mind understands its a fantasy world soon into the cartoon. Its like this episode is trying to parody these cartoons without any understanding about the soul and wit of them to properly do it.

It is inconceivable that such a enormously powerful baby would be allowed to even leave its lab, that nobody has any fear of it killing hundreds of people with a sneeze is absurd and horrible to witness in action.

I will admittedly say that there is some joy to watching the baby get away from all the captors. The morals of the episode were so bad though. The thought that a baby is just innocent and blameless for doing these mass murders stretches credulity and the portrayal of how you are supposed to laugh at all the dead people who "dared" try to stop a baby from doing mass murder is absolutely bizarre.

This show is NOT for kids at least from the pure standpoint they might think killing at will was ever appropriate, the irony would go past their heads.

Mindy and Buttons
junedeer2 June 2022
The animation style and story premise gave me some serious Mindy and Buttons vibe from Animaniacs just way more gory. 10/10 for the extra bloddy nostalgia. I'm excited to see where the rest of this series goes with using different animation studios to tell their stories.

Laser Baby's Day Out, an Homage...
uncleskuncle4 April 2022
This was a cute first episode and introduced what Vought has been doing since the "Truth" came out.

What we see is an Homage to a great Looney Tunes rendition.

A Disney-like episode
TheTruthofItIs17 March 2022
This first episode of "Diabolical" was fashioned after 1960's Disney cartoons. It's devoid of dialogue, has a lot of bungling sound effects and soundtrack, is mostly rated "G" except for the "PG-13" violence of baby's uncontrolled laser-vision, just barely watchable.

uninspired, dumb Looney Tunes homage with blood&gore
Shadowboy_25cm10 March 2022
First episode of this The Boys spin-off is just an uninspired Looney Tunes homage for the blood'n'guts fans.

As each episode is a stand-alone, skip this one.

Skippable Episode
peter-jonssonxp24 May 2022
Never was a fan of these kind of animations.

It felt lazy and uninspired like they felt like they had to do something just to have something to show.

It's not the worst episode made but it is the second worst.
