Supergirl begins...
Chalice_Of_Evil9 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Kara's return was very welcome. The first thing she does when she shows up again? Save a bunch of people. And in style too. I like the new outfit she's sporting. It gives a nice nod to the classic Supergirl costume, whilst not being 100% complete (she's missing the \S/ symbol on the front of her shirt, as well as the red cape...but the flowing red CGI'd fabric behind her was close enough). I loved the smile and wink that she gave Clark.

Good humorous moment with the 'Maiden of Might' newspaper headline/nod to what Supergirl's referred to as and Lois commenting on the alliteration. Clark forgetting to act totally weirded out about the "reveal" of his cousin's superhero status in front of Lois. His "Yeah, she didn't tell me about it." (like it was an afterthought) line and the look he shot Lois's way were pretty funny.

I was thankful for the Clark and Kara hug. One of the best things about Season 7 was the family relationship the two of them had. I always enjoyed their interaction, and it was good to see him greet her like the family member she is. Too bad he had to go and mess up the moment with his automatic distrust of her. Your cousin says she's doing something for you, Clark, but all you can do is be paranoid and crotchety? Way to show faith in your cousin. If she *really* cares about family, Clark? This coming from the guy who didn't even bother to do a thorough search for his cousin when she went missing at the end of Season 7. And, please, Clark...you avoid questions like no other. You've lied your arse off for many years. I guess he gets his immature attitude from his father (since it appears now that Jor-El is in a grand funk and not talking to Clark).

Nifty red, blue and yellow combo from Kara in her barn scene with Clark. And good on her for pointing out that Clark's been on Earth all this time and he can't even fly. I finally liked Clark again when he said to Kara "You're my only family and I need your help.".

I really enjoyed their scene on the windmill. FINALLY we got to see that scene which had originally been planned for sometime in Season 7, I believe, with Kara teaching Clark to fly and his actual *attempt* at doing it (rather than just whining and easily giving up like he did in Season 7 when she urged him to try). It was great seeing the look on his face as he started to fly, then it changing to his sudden realisation that he was losing momentum, right before he plummeted in through the poor abused barn.

Clark and Kara's awkwardness in the S&M club was pretty funny too.

Once again Kara comes through for Clark, saving his butt from possessed Godfrey. Don't blame Kara for being awesome, blame Clark for being lame.

I liked Lois and Kara's talk. I do feel sorry for Kara, since all she really has is Clark and he's not exactly the greatest cousin ever. Then again, Kara's not one to be tied down by relationships, she's more focused on saving people - which is what makes her such a great hero.

Lois trying to think up names for Kara's superhero persona was amusing.

Good to see Kara going the disguise route. I liked Clark's reaction to seeing her with the brown hair and glasses. She's definitely matured a lot (unlike Clark, who's been fighting his destiny for the better part of the series, but in this episode was acting all entitled and whiny at Kara because she was being proactive).

I wish the episode could have focused more on Clark & Kara, and that the two of them could have parted on better terms. Though it definitely feels like the show has left it open for her return. I only hope they don't just bring her back simply to kill her off (as it seems like that's exactly the type of thing this show would do).

I've always been a fan of the character of Kara/Supergirl, ever since I saw the Supergirl movie starring Helen Slater. I had hoped the character would be brought into Smallville and was very glad to see her introduced at the start of Season 7.

I've always liked the character of Kara on the show, and have enjoyed Laura Vandervoort's portrayal of her. I felt she was done a disservice in Season 7 and underutilized/not written as well as she could have been. I was very happy to have her back for an episode in Season 8, and am grateful for this episode that has set her up as Supergirl with a secret identity. I feel she's quite unappreciated, even though she's one of the more heroic people in the show. I'm all for the show bringing her back again later in the season...so long as they don't kill her off. She deserves better than that.

It was great to see Laura on the show again and this episode easily beat the first two episodes of Season 10.

No Blur, convincing antagonist, mitigated Supergirl, average FX, inspiring and puzzling Oliver, neverending teasing, cliché investigation, intriguing dual Clark

Supergirl could have been this season Idol. Indeed it shared a few similarities with the 9th season episode. But despite its many appealing elements it was also filled with disappointing ones. It's almost like if the writers had lost their inspiration so I really hope Smallville's last adventure won't turn into a journey in the desert.

My first complain would be about the continuity. I don't mind special episodes as long as they're as excellent as Warrior and other gems. It's not that it was a rotten installment but it felt like skipping Shield. Will its cliffhanger be covered in the upcoming episode ? I hope so because for the moment fans should feel betrayed. To sum things up it was a direct sequel to Lazarus and its events covered the rise of a new nemesis. The guest star did a convincing job at portraying a dark and obsessed character. In my opinion his performance was even better than the actor who played District Attorney Raymond Sacks in Idol and Charade. There was something creepy and disturbing about him. One of his monologue even reminded me of the fascinating and creative Inception so the writers gave birth to an interesting creature. In fact I wouldn't mind if he came back for more like Sacks did !

As for Supergirl even if I'm not really into the actress behind her mask I have to admit that her part was both entertaining and interesting. Using her to help shape Clark's destiny was a smart move. The visual effects of her first appearance were disastrous but I quickly forgot about them as the story unveiled. Moreover others were better but in general I think they should only render them in dark scenes, like in Jurassic Park for example. That way we wouldn't see their seams. An other issue was her moody attitude. One minute she's pro Jor-El, the next she's Clark's mentor. But in the end her contribution was priceless and viewers fascinated by identity crisis should be in heaven. It leads us to Oliver, sweatily and top less as always. Justin Hartley is a freak of nature. How is it possible to be so hot ? His training scene should drive the girls crazy ! Otherwise his arc wasn't just about showing off but actually more about moving forward. In season 9 his dark quest was captivating and I was wondering how he would deal with Chloe's decision. Its development was touching because it should make the man and hero grow on you even more. From the church moment, but not religious, to the surprising ending long time Green Arrow fans should be puzzled and intrigued. Crossfire is not far away, and that's definitely a good thing.

Smallville is also a lot about Lois & Clark and Supergirl wasn't an exception. However I found that the writers are trying too hard to make their relationship as extraordinary as possible. I don't want them to act like Bones & Cie protagonists. We already played that teasing game in the past season. Episodes like Rabid and Roulette were exquisite but I think it's time to take things to the next level. Have they forgotten about Escape ? Of course since their epic kiss in Salvation they don't know how to love each other anymore but I worry that their scenes will get boring. In fact I found the endless close-ups a bit annoying and even worried that Lois would pull an other Idol. I also can't comprehend how Clark could possible not know about Lois. Even the silly chick from Spider-Man recognized Peter Parker's lips in the film ! Also for once I was slightly disappointed by Lois investigation when I'm a huge fan of her adventures. In Charade she was both smart and sexy. The superficial universe she dived in even reminded me of The Mask. But here the dark and sexual elements were misplaced and over the top. A lazy way to excite teenagers and the ultimate cliché of underground culture ! I think they should have chosen a completely different approach, a smarter and more original one. However there was something almost poetic about the way Lois fell into the web of the antagonist. How can you be objective when it comes to Erica Durance ? Last but not least let's also not forget Clark's dark journey because it's captivating. It actually reminds me of Davis Bloome's battle against Doomsday in season 8. It would be mesmerizing to witness the birth of a Dark Superman !

Supergirl
Colcatron11 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Kara returns for the first time since a throwaway appearance in the season 8 episode "Bloodline" which was little more than a glorified cameo. Finally her character is given a proper return, and proper closure. This isn't Kara saving people secretly the way her and Clark always did on Smallville, this is Kara as a public superhero for the first time. Kara had been one of my favourite characters, but I felt the writers tanked her in the second half of season 7, with lame amnesia stories. As I already said, I was equally frustrated by her glorified cameo in "Bloodline" so it's such a relief to finally have a proper send off for her in "Supergirl". This wouldn't be her last episode in the series, but it is the one that gives her character closure. I also felt after several episodes in season 7 they missed the whole point of having Kara on the show in the first place, which should be as a mentor to Clark. This episode finally gets back on track with that.

This episode isn't entirely about Kara. The main plot revolves around Gordon Godfrey, otherwise known as Glorious Godfrey from the comics, a minion of Darkseid. The majority of Smallville portrayals of DC villains are heavily altered in their adaptations. In the case of Godfrey, he's as close to his comic book character as I believe they could have gotten. His purpose is exactly the same, to stir up hatred towards Superheroes, or vigilantes. This would mark the beginning of the Vigilante Registration Act story, which later in the season would lose its focus and become too much of an X-Men imitation. Here the plot is at its best, with Godfrey steering the ship. I loved the actor's portrayal of Godfrey, and how they use him to give us our first proper introduction to Darkseid was very effective.

In the end, I can't think of anything to complain about with this episode. Godfrey was a fantastic supporting villain, as Desaad and Granny Goodness would be in later episodes. Most of all, this is a straight Superhero story, featuring a proper send off for Kara aka Supergirl. She would return in one more episode by the end of the season, but there again it would be as an irrelevant background character in a wasted cameo. This is one of the best episodes of the final season, and after many disappointing episodes near the end of season 7 and one in season 8, a story that gets Kara's character back on track for one final time.

What about continuity

Warning: Spoilers
In the previous season Clark has sent all Kriptonians to another planet, except him due to blue kriptonite which in my opinion was a smart and unexpected move. But I don't understand how in the new season we see Kara still here. Wasn't she also supposed to be teleported to another planet if we respect the story of the previous season? I think it could have been explained somehow but it was just a sloppy move from writers side. However, I liked Kara's presence in this new season and it gave a new perspective, but I miss Chloe and very curious what will be Oliver's actions and story looking forward.
