Solid finish with Noah Emmerich on good form
snoozejonc12 August 2021
The survivors enter the CDC building and meet Dr Jenner.

This is an emotional 45 minutes that has strong character moments and performances.

The plot has a few contrivances that set up the dramatic tension. Without going into detail I think that the timing of their arrival is rather convenient for doing the character development and swiftly kicking off another major moment of suspense. That being said, the character development is very good and the themes written into the character exchanges such as hope, death, and suicide are excellent.

There is a large exposition dump from Dr Jenner that has some great sci-fi detail, but aspects of his backstory and how everything unfolds with him are quite predictable. He is played superbly well by Noah Emmerich. The other cast members give strong performances too.

Visually it is excellent. The cinematography and editing are as strong as ever, particularly the shower scenes that convey the different emotions felt by the various characters. The set design and general art direction is perfect, with superb scenes created both inside and outside the CDC. The imagery used in some of the scientific explanations helps make the scene more cinematic.

It does somewhat follow a 'Lost' formula in cinematic style, but this works well for a zombie apocalypse story.

For me it's a 7.5/10 but I round upwards.

A good season finale
slightlymad2222 October 2014
The episode starts with a flashback to Shane trying to save Rick amid pandemonium at the hospital. We then see the survivors enter the CDU but Edward Jenner may not be the saviour they are hoping for.

Once again the cast is excellent again. As is the direction.

Andrew Lincoln is again the main man while Norman Redus is excellent, as are Melissa McBride, Steven Yeun and Jon Bernthall

Jeffrey DeMunn as Dale shares a great scene with Laurie Holden's Andrea towards the end.

I have loved everything about this show except Sarah Wayne Callies. A great first season. Tip of the cap to all involved.

A gripping finale!
and_mikkelsen2 January 2024
This was a great way to conclude this season as it provides some answers to all this, as well as putting out characters at a crossroad on what to do from here!

This episode shows how this show can handle drama as well! Despite the lack of action and walkers, the episode was still tense and exciting! Some of our characters also starts to show their true colours which will play into season two!

Noah Emmerson made a memorable appearence as Dr. Jenner! I always think of him when I think of season one! I enjoy the choice that he let our characters face.. give up or keep going in search of a solution!

Overall season one might be short, but stands as one of the stronger seasons and a great introduction to the show!

TS-19

Warning: Spoilers
Loved it, it felt like an entire arc in one episode. Jenner and the sample TS-19, the facility, the Shane and Lori heat discussion. The happiness to have found a second chance inside the facility and the despair that came after you find it isn't a second chance but a moment. And the last part Jenner say something that seems to be pretty important but he would probably keep for himself until the very end.

Ts-19

Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 Episode 6 - Ts-19

OK last week's episode 5 of The Walking Dead, which is called "Wildfire", wasn't a weak episode. It was a strong one with great performances from most of the cast members. It was a slower episode with a little bit of everything. It had some action, great character development and drama. But i truly believe that "Wildfire" was a path that led to an explosive season 1 finale, which is called "Ts-19".

"Ts-19" starts immediately from where we left last week. Rick's group is welcomed to enter and taste the luxury of CDC but peace won't remain for a long time. After Dr. Edwin Jenner took a blood sample from everyone they organized a dinner. Rick and the others slowly realize that the CDC if full of food and other supplies so they start to grow with the idea of staying here for a while. The group is broken from what happened to the camp the other day so most of them are trying to find their own space. After the meal, when everyone is asleep, conflict starts between Shane and Lori. Shane tried to seduce and rape her. But she fought back and made him stop. The next morning Edwin tries to update Rick's group about the plague. He tells them that he tried to find a cure and a way to stop what's happening but he ended up losing the last sample. Test Subject - 19 was his wife, whose last wish was to examine her reanimated corpse so her husband could find a cure. He admits that the last sample was lost during an accident in his lab. Jenner also informs the group that CDC is on a countdown of self-destruct. Tensions soon arise within the group. Shane blames Rick and Jenner for condemning the lives of the others. Jenner tells secretly something to Rick and then he lets them escape from the room they were trapped but he suggests them to hurry because the countdown ends. Andrea and Jacqui decide to stay with Jenner. Dale convinces Andrea not to give up on life. She decides to follow him and they are trying to find a way out of the CDC. Nearly before the explosion Carol gives to Rick a frag-grenade that he previously scavenged from the walker in the tank. They reach their cars and then the CDC explodes.

"TS-19" was another stellar episode of the Walking Dead. It was a great episode but it didn't give the taste of a finale. Sure the Atlanta story ark seems that reached the deadline but I believe they could have found other ways to end such a great season. All and all this episode was awesome. It had action, character development and it pushed the story forward. Because now we know that Rick's group is heading out of Atlanta. I'm so curious what other threats Rick will come against and how he will co-exist with Shane. For me is a 9 out of 10.

Drama without Walkers
claudio_carvalho9 October 2011
Dr. Edwin Jenner receives Rick and the survivors in the facility and requests a blood examination of each person to prove that they are not contaminated. They have a dream night with hot water for the bath, air conditioning and dinner with Italian and French wine.

In the morning, Dr. Jenner shows a film of the "zombiefication" process with a sequence of scanned images of a brain of a contaminated subject that dies and has the body reanimated by the infection. When Dale asks the meaning of a clock countdown in the laboratory, Dr. Jenner explains that the facility is running out fuel and a shutdown process with subsequent self-destruction has initiated and they are all trapped in the building and doomed to die.

"TS-19" is the last episode of the short First Season of "Walking Dead". After a promising and full of action beginning, the series has switched to personal dramas (Shane, Andrea, Lori, Jim and others) with good characters development. The stories are good, but I hope that in the Second Season, the plot returns to what fans of zombies' film expect to see, with lots of walkers and gore. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "TS-19" (1.6)

Note: On 08 April 2016, I saw this show again.

There's Nothing Left
Deadlyknights3 November 2022
This episode serves as a dump of information from C. D. C scientist Edward Jenner and his research team of 1. We get to the "root" of what's really the situation of the world, and it's bad. This episode is also one of the more drastic changes from the comics and as a result, can kind of serve as a identity crisis for the show. But don't let that distract you from the impeccable writing, acting, and directing. This episode is criminally underrated and goes along with the likes of No Sanctuary, Days Gone By and Too Far Gone. The Shane situation reaches another level when Shane takes it a step too far with Lori. Seeing the characters react to this information with despair and outright giving up. Jenner poses as an endpoint for anyone who wants to jump ship with him. If anything, this episode serves for an excellent stopping point for a thrilling, engaging season of non stop action, thrilling set pieces and a brilliant set up for some of the best seasons of television.

A Great Season Finale!
g-bodyl16 December 2013
The final episode of Season 1 is a good one and despite the fact it doesn't have a great cliffhanger, I still want more. I liked this episode because we learn more about the actual virus and whether there is a cure or not. And there is a good balance between the relaxing, quiet time and the good, tense action. The first half is story-building and the second half is the action as they are trying to flee the CDC.

This episode, "TS-19", is about how the gang is allowed to enter Jenner's facility and for the first time in a long time, they get to enjoy real food, wine, and hot showers. But as they learn more about Jenner and the virus, they realize it may not be the safest thing to do staying at this facility.

Overall, this is a solid ending to an amazing first season. I can't wait to check out more of the adventures of Rick Grimes. This is a really hooking show and it's not all about those zombies. While altering between a quiet start and an action-packed ending, this episode manages to be an effective finale. I rate this episode 9/10.

An Engaging Season Finale
mikeamber-3615728 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
TS-19 puts our group in a very different situation, yet still stressful at the same time. Dr. Edwin Jenner admits Rick and company into a new safe haven, the CDC. Unfortunately, it turns out not to be exactly what it was worked up to be, and the entire place blows up in the shocking final scene.

Overall, this is a great episode, but I think it lacked some of the usual charm that the Walking Dead employs. Other than that, it was very good, with great dialogue, acting and cinematography. TS-19 caps off the very great Season 1 of the Walking Dead.

Such a amazing ending. Emotional and gripping, so so good. The first season is a masterpiece regardless of what you think of the newer seasons. Of course great acting from everyone, however in walking dead fashion the CGI is extremely outdated.

Amazing season finale!
Red_Identity5 December 2010
Sadly, The Walking Dead has already finished its great season, and it did so with a bang!

The episode lets up look back into the CDC and into the headquarters. We find out not everything is how it seems, and that the group might actually be in danger. Without revealing too much, this was a great ending to the season. We also say goodbye to a character and I was really glad another two characters ended up not dying. I do not want to wait for next year, 6 episodes was too little! However, I will be waiting for the next season and to see what the show brings us! Long live the Walking Dead!

The Day Will Come When You Won't Be
devinpbuffington27 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What a way to end the season.

Season One Episode 6 is Frank at his best showing off his strengths. There is no large set piece like a city to have to overdo in order to make everything feel overwhelming and scary. The CDC was a perfect option to set the finale of the season.

We get to see Shane unravel and take out his frustrations on Lori. We see how Rick really feels about the world that he's been forced to adopt over the last week or two. A couple of characters make the ultimate decision. One of them isn't as strong willed as they might think they are in the end.

Jenner was a haunting host. Every bit of the desperate sadness of this new world was perfectly portrayed on him. He lost it all. His friends, His colleagues, and His wife but felt obligated to continue going just for the pure sake of a promise he made. He had every option to "opt out" and proved that some people prevail even in the end times.

The last 15 minutes of this season are some of the most tense we see out of this series for a while going forward. It's impossible to not see how good of a director Frank is in those tense moments. Human acting is always better than CGI.

Season finale is a little boring which I didn't expect.
XueHuaBingYu26 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode 6 is the season finale of the first season. I can't believe that the season finale came so quickly. I hoped that they made more episodes, but season 1 ended with 6 episodes. I hope that they would make more episodes in the next upcoming seasons.

This episode also turned out to be some kind of drama. I'm not saying that it's boring, and it's not that bad either. I wish they could make it better, it'd be better.

What I love most is that the way they showed Rick's past in small parts before the opening sequence. By means of it, the plot becomes clearer and clearer. I really like to see more of it.

The contents are okay and the performances of the actors and actresses are good in this episode or all the other episodes. Because of it, even the plot is sort of a drama, it turned out to be a fine episode.

That being said, it's great to know about TS-19 and how it works. But I don't know why that doctor in CDC wants to died that much. At least, he should've tried.

All in all, this episode somehow a little boring, but it's not that much boring and it's still doing good and I can't wait to watch the next season. 😁

I HATED this episode!
Stichey22 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As someone that adores the comics and loved most of the AMC Series, this episode could not have been any more disappointing, poorly conceived and out of place.

First off, again, as a fan of the comics, the sight of seeing Rick become hysterical and pound on a metal door was woefully out of character. Rick is usually a master strategist, but to learn that he had depleted all the group's resources in order to reach the CDC only added to the notion that whomever wrote this sorry episode seemed to have no idea of Rick as a character, of just what makes The Walking Dead a great narrative.

Add then the notion of a CDC Scientist allowing people into his safe house only to complain about how they might contaminate the facility was madness, but absolutely nothing compared to the utter lunacy of deciding that the best thing was to instead kill them all by trapping them inside during detonation of the facility once power runs out. Never did it make sense in the episode why someone seemingly fighting to find a cure would just open the door of his safe house so he can bring others in to die.

At the end of the episode, more illogic enters in when the group hops back into their caravan and drives off despite the fact shared earlier that all resources were depleted. The only thing that could have made this all worse was if the episode had alluded to Aliens having a part in this mess (akin to the joke in issue #75 of the series).

Once this sorry episode was done, I PRAYED that future episodes would stay closer to the actual series as this episode was woefully bad.

No horror needed
davisond-7038130 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This season started great, the middle was great and so was the ending.

Its very dramatic and no walkers, no scares and no horror was needed for this to happen.

The plot is that Rick and the group make it into the CDC and meet Dr Edwin Jenner, thw guy working on a cure. There is hot water, electricity, heating, lots of food and wine and its safe from the world outside.

Its revealed that Jenners wife, Candice is the walker he was testing on and that he plans on killing himself by blowing up the building. Once the group are in, the doors stay shut and they are trapped too so the last 20 mins is tense wondering how they will get out.

Its also revealed that Shane did indeed try to save Rick as the outbreak was happening but couldnt due to soliders excuting all the people in the hospital.

The acting is spot on, theirs some unexpected moments and emotion all throughout.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was an interesting one. It's notable how Jenner was created just for this show, since he isn't a character in the comics. I love that we get a deeper insight on how the dead come back to life. It's also good the show didn't give us an explanation on how it all started, it keeps it perfectly vague.

The season overall is a really good first season. Not as character drivven nor spectacular as the next seasons, but still pretty good.

A Classic Zombie Series
soheyl-989-53857228 February 2011
Finally! After a lot of near-nonsensical zombie movies, we've now come across a stylish, matter-of-fact zombie series that's just gripping...to say the least. Apart from the brilliant direction & screenplay, what really hits the viewer(maybe unconsciously)is the brilliant camera-work...and, hold on, the fantastic background music - which is used to a minimum...it's used only at the right moments! Most of the time there's no music, which actually adds to the tension...making you feel you are with them! Of course, the heavy influence of "28 days Later" & "28 weeks later" is obvious, but it's pardonable, considering the final result. Even the background music is influenced by John Murphy...but hey, no problem! The end result - Can't wait for season 2!

Scintillating season finale
TheLittleSongbird24 May 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

"TS-19" is scintillating, a cracker of a season finale that comes this close to fully exploding. And a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect , at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

Like all the episodes of the show, "TS-19" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing is intelligent and thought-provoking, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and already showing signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The more eventful scenes are thrilling and terrifying as well as uncompromising.

Appreciated the deliberately paced story-building of the first half, with just as much rich detail to characterisation, and just as much the nerve-shredding intensity and excitement of the second half. Would have liked more resolution to a few of the plot threads, not everything felt completely rounded off which for a season finale is a little disappointing.

It's all thrilling and tautly paced without rushing through the more important parts. The world building is already stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric while the show throughout has been strongly acted. Andrew Lincoln is an excellent lead, while there are highlight contributions from Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey DeMunn, Laurie Holden and especially Noah Emmerich.

In conclusion, excellent and scintillating that could have been even more. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The Andromeda strain meets the walking dead!
mm-3923 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent television! The show has a high budget, and great script which makes for entertaining television. The show is original with the idea of people trying to survive a zombie infested world as a weekly T V series. What makes the show excellent is they will use classic movie ideas and integrate the ideas into the show. If any of the viewers can remember a classic movie called The Andromeda strain they will see the similarities with the TS 19 episode. The survivors of the zombie epidemic get a reprieve from their problems when they find the C D C centre, and are given food, hot showers etc. However, the disease facility will self destruct in so many hours and the survivors must find a way out. A cool show. I give the season final a nine out of ten. To bad there is only 6 episode, but being made on such a big budget I believe the makers want quality over quantity.

As the survivors face their darkest hour, they are forced to confront their own fears and uncertainties, and to make impossible choices in order to stay alive
fernandoschiavi28 February 2024
Directed by Guy Ferland, the season finale of "The Walking Dead" explores the survivors' last hope for safety at the CDC. As they seek refuge within its walls, they are confronted with the grim reality of their situation and the difficult choices they must make in order to survive.

One of the most gripping scenes in this episode is the revelation of the true nature of the zombie epidemic, as Dr. Jenner reveals the horrifying truth about the virus and its devastating effects on humanity. The tension builds as the survivors grapple with the implications of this revelation, and their hopes for a cure are dashed.

"TS-19" explores themes of desperation, survival, and the search for meaning in a world gone mad. As the survivors face their darkest hour, they are forced to confront their own fears and uncertainties, and to make impossible choices in order to stay alive.

Overall, the first season of "The Walking Dead" is a gripping and intense journey into the heart of darkness, exploring themes of survival, humanity, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. With its compelling characters, atmospheric setting, and thought-provoking storytelling, it sets the stage for what promises to be an epic saga of survival and redemption.

Do I have to applaud the actors every episode now? You can feel their chemistry. However, that doesn't save TS-19 for being the weakest IMO of the season. I liked the science behind the apocalypse itself and the character development, but it isn't the same without walkers involved. There were scenes that stood out like the ending, when they're all desperate to escape, and the dinner/breakfast scene. It wasn't my favorite plotline in general.

Nothing the pilot was, barely entertaining and rarely interesting
igoatabase6 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
My opinion is mixed about this finale. It began with an enlightening and long awaited explanation of Rick's hypothetical death. It was quite surprising to witness Shane's desperate attempt to save his buddy. Until TS-19 happened I really thought he didn't care about him and was happy until he came back from the dead, without walking. So the first minutes were are intense and shocking as in Tell It to the Frogs. However I can't help being disappointed by the episode story. The feast after the apocalypse was refreshing but I'm skeptical about the whole drunken part. Moreover it was obvious something was wrong with the scientist so I saw the mumbo jumbo ending coming from miles away. He survived all this time alone and did everything he could to find a cure but decided to give up when he finally encountered other souls. Does it make any sense ? Things got even worse when he pressed some magic button to trap them like rats and of course Rick was the only one smart enough to convince him to open the door. My hero ! And like in Vatos women kept whining and slowing the supermen down. Things would be so much more interesting if Sarah Wayne Callies and Laurie Holden's characters were stronger. Andrea could definitely be a female leader match to Rick or Shane ! Still the speech about fossil resources and the human brain was captivating. It was served by a well produced CG animation but wish it had lasted longer. In fact it reminded me of the cult survivalist dialog in Survivors (1975) pilot, The Fourth Horseman. The energy issue was also quite actual and revealed how weak our society actually is. That's why renewable energy is so vital. So it made the story even weaker considering such a critical building couldn't be just powered by fuel barrels, or something similar. An other annoyance was the fact that their arrival made things worse. One second they enter the building, the next it explodes. And like if it wasn't enough the ending wasn't intriguing at all. Ready for an other roadtrip ? I'm not sure. The Walking Dead felt more like an experiment to test viewers. The first two episodes and Wildfire were just probably too strong compared to the others. So Frank Darabont probably made the right move when he decided to fire all his writing staff. Let's recruit some fresh and more talented individuals for the inevitable second season. An other solution would have been to better manage or tutorial them but no one is perfect.

"You don't get to do that, to come into somebody's life, make them care and then just check out" -Dale Horvath. This is such a great finale to such a great season. It starts off with an amazing scene in the hospital showing how Shane blocked off the door for Rick. When there are short little clips of everybody in the shower it ends off with Shane looking mad and drinking. Later, Shane is talking to Lori about how they need him and he saved them. (Then Shane tries to, I'm not allowed to say this word) Lori showing his obsession with her and setting up his villain arc for next season. "29:10" is the first time Shane says "let me tell you something".
