One more reason to hate Valentine's Day
cowgirl-jones12 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This episode gave me another reason to hate no to fear valentine's Day.

I was prepared for a gory episode. Come on the title's My Bloody Valentine, and with supernatural you know that they have to include something with a real heart somewhere in the show. But I have to admit I was not prepared for them eating on each other. I've heard of people smacking on their boyfriends but not snacking. Talk about a real man eater.

The funniest part had to be Cupid. The fact that he was naked and emotional just made it better. It also helped that he was a two hundred pound hugging machine. You have to hand it to Misha Collins for making it through the hugging(s) with a straight face. And the fact that Castiel just kept eating was hilarious.

A really well written episode
CubsandCulture23 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode packs a lot into 40 minutes. You have the horseman storyline, Dean being empty inside, Sam remaining addicted to demon blood, and the big revelation that John/Mary were heavenly arranged. Each of the various plot beats seems like they should be in the same episode but Edlund manages to blend each so that it all fits. This is such a key episode for the show and season overall and it's frankly amazing how much it packed into it. And it has a great gags and lines that ends up being very entertaining.

Famine was given his due and the horsemen are still the best part of this season.

Two Horsemen down two to go, Way to go Team Free Will! Pestilence and Death "Wait your turn"
zombiehigh1810 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Ever since we've seen War I wondered what other horsemen would be like and the answer came with this extra creepy old man. Famine was the only logical yet not forced answer to all the bizarre things going on from the get go. Writer Ben Edlund proved that he can make the audience laugh ,cry and heart broken all in one episode, not forgetting to throw in some disgusting scenes and gory deaths in between.

Famine's effect came far more destructive than War's and it will sure be lingering around in the season for episodes to come making us wonder will Sam's weakness be the reason he will say Yes to Lucifer as he mentioned to Dean last episode?

Sam's daemon blood addiction was last brought up on "Free to be you and me" when he resisted swallowing the daemon blood but we all knew it was not over and I wondered when will they bring that up again. Jared Padalecki gave an amazing performance as weak helpless Sam and again with the all hopped up on daemon blood crazy eyes Sam. I was glad Sam didn't hide his hunger for daemon blood from his brother asking Dean for help and to lock him down, I was touched to see him lying helplessly on the bathroom floor hand cuffed to the sink and I was heart broken to see him give up to his weakness and in the end though we didn't actually get to see it, I found my self crying upon hearing him screaming asking for Dean's help in Bobby's detox panic room.

Cas too wasn't left unaffected by Famine, we spotted him eating all through the episode because the hunger for red meat reached out to his vessel.

And then there is Dean, every episode we see him slowly dying from the inside, he knows he is helpless and can't save his family no matter how hard he tries especially with Michael's words to him last episode about destiny and the illusion of free will and with all angels other than Cas convinced that he will eventually be forced to say the big Yes and kill Sammy. Dean is already feeling defeated and it reached out to his soul killing him from the inside. He is the only one left unaffected by Famine because nothing will ever satisfy him and bring him joy. Jensen was breathtaking with his performance, We could see Dean's pain to Sam's addiction clearly in the man's eyes and his broken voice. And though Sam came to his rescue, he was even more shocked seeing Sam again giving in to his addiction and using his daemonic powers. He broke our hearts with his inability to bear Sam's screams unable to help his little brother and save him and his plea for help on the closing scene was purely heart wrenching.

This is my all time favourite episode, I never get tired watching it. My favourite moment is with the boys and Cas and the naked hugging cherub aka Cupid. It was cute to see Cas as part of the team and instead of Dean subjecting Sammy to embarrassing situations, we see the boys team up against Cas volunteering him to comfort the crying cherub.

Fast paced and ties everything w a bow

One of the best episodes and so underrated of the season. Different plots to the story of the episode tied in perfectly. Excellent writing and acting from the 3. The scene we get to see Jensen's vulnerability and pain. He is such a diverse actor.

'Roses are red, violets are blue, chocolate is good, but instead I think I'll eat you'...
Chalice_Of_Evil12 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Think they'll put that^ on a Valentine's Day card? In Hell, maybe.

Talk about a raunchy/gory teaser. Too bad the show already used the title 'Sex and Violence' in Season 4, as it would have been very appropriate for this episode (especially with the blood literally shooting up from the ground. Eating each other while screwing? Nasty!). Though nice shout-out - with the title of this episode being 'My Bloody Valentine' - to that movie Jensen starred in by the same name.

Sam telling Dean to "unleash the Kraken" was amusing, as was what Dean calls Valentine's Day ("Unattached Drifter Christmas"). Good on Sam for being able to tell something was wrong with Dean (when he appeared not in the mood for bars full of lonely women).

The lady in red, Janice, all too casually pulling out a gun and shooting that guy, thus putting an end to his annoying whipping sound effects? THAT was awesome! Shut him right the hell up (and made all the more amusing by the delayed reaction of his leg dropping down).

Sam/Jared's facial expression upon walking by that suited guy in slow-mo? Also amusing, but for a whole different reason (probably not intentional). Glad to see Dean still had a sense of humour about him (despite his glum first scene), with him passing the heart to Sam and asking him to be his valentine. Also funny was Dean on the phone to Castiel, then Castiel suddenly appearing in front of Dean right up in his face and their exchange of "I'm there now.", "Yeah, I get that.", "I'm gonna hang up...now." with the echo of Dean's voice heard through the phone as he said "Right.". Then the funny kept on coming with Dean asking if, by "cherub", Castiel meant "little flying fat kid in diapers" and Castiel clarified, "They're not incontinent.". After Castiel explained everything, Sam's "Naturally." and Dean's sniff/facial expression as he said "'Course we do." were the perfect way to end the scene.

Again, Sam was able to tell something was up with Dean when he "wasn't hungry" (which shows he knows his brother fairly well). The facial expressions exchanged when Castiel took Dean's burger and was about to eat it were highly amusing. Poor Dean - being grabbed from behind by a big giant naked guy and shaken about. Then poor Castiel, as well as Sam (loved seeing him turn and try to get away). I can understand why "no one likes it" (in regards to Cupid's way of shaking hands). I liked Dean's flinching as Cupid passed by him, crying, and then Sam and Dean voting Castiel to go console the cherub. I also liked Sam and Dean's expressions of encouragement to him. What I DIDN'T like was the revelation of John and Mary being fixed up by Heaven and Sam and Dean's birth being a plan and all that crap. Way to rewrite things, show. Can't blame Dean for punching the jerk (despite the futility of it), just as I can't blame Sam's second take after Dean's "I punched a d!ck!".

Castiel eating was constantly funny. I liked that he mentioned Jimmy (I guess getting exploded in the premiere means nothing and Jimmy's still alive in there). Decrepit old Famine and his posse of suited-up, sunglasses-wearing goons in black cars looked like they were out of some vampire film. Speaking of vampires...Jared did a good job with his delivery of "Wait your turn." to the demon he flung away after drinking the other demon's blood.

The stand-out scenes for both Jared and Jensen were at the end of the episode. Jared wasn't even on screen, but *hearing* him going through the demon blood detoxing again sounded horrible/painful as all get- out. Jared really knows how to convey pain and agony. As if it wasn't terrible enough for Sam (as well as Dean) to have to go through last season, going through it again was just...well...I completely understand how utterly tired/defeated Dean looked and sounded at the very end of the episode. Him begging for help - that was some excellent acting from Jensen there (but then, he's always good). I like how they're using the Horsemen in somewhat unexpected sorts of ways/putting a new spin on the kind of havoc the Horsemen cause. I did have a few problems with this episode, but on the whole...it wasn't too bad (though not as good as last week's).

Perfect blend

Warning: Spoilers
Horror, comedy, drama, social commentary, this is one of the most balanced episodes of spn. It is absolutely thrilling and not a moment is dull. The "monster" is probably the best one, the creepiest. My only thing was that Dean as we see in the later seasons has a problem with alcohol, doesn't make much sense that he wouldn't be drinking, he even does at the end to numb himself, i guess it can be interpreted as doing something that is enjoyable....in anycase not a big problem for this pretty much perfect episode.

Gore and Funny
claudio_carvalho9 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A couple of days before the Valentine Day, two valentines devour each other. On the next day, two lovers commit suicide. Dean and Sam investigate the murders and summon Castiel to help them. Castiel tells that the responsible is a cupid that has gone nuts. The angel brings the cupid and they conclude that he is innocent.

When Sam feels hunger for demon blood, they discover that the local population has been attacked by Famine, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

"My Bloody Valentine" is a gore and funny episode of Supernatural. The beginning with the valentines devouring each other is gore; the cupid is funny; but I did not see the association of the two lovers that commit suicide with Famine. My vote is seven.
