Judge Judy made a judgment error regarding the stimulus checks that were issued in 2020. Each family that filed a tax return was entitled to receive a third US issued check for 1,400 per person. If the couple received 2,800 that would be for a jointly filed return both entitled to 1,400 apiece. The issue that did not come up would be that the total amount of the stimulus checks should have been for 4,200 of which the grand mother should received only 1,400. In addition, there were 2 other stimulus checks issued during the year in which included a check for.600 for a qualifying child. Total stimulus checks received for a child would be 600 + 600 + 1,400 or 2,600. The Judge appears to be making a judgement when she misstated the facts on how the stimulus checks were to be issued by the US government, she was more interested in verbalizing her view points on the father of the child then reviewing the tax return and the law. If the checks were issued, the only recourse for the Grandmother would be to sue her daughter and husband for any wrongfully issued refund. IRS will not get involved.
