Really, really tough to rate.

Geno's House of Films posts a lot of obscure and unusual old films on YouTube and one of their strangest posts is "Wedding Belles". Why is it so unusual? Well, for several reasons. First, although it's credited as a film from 1931, it is actually from 1934 and Geno explains the mistake in the prologue to the film. Second, it's apparently the actual only copy of the short...and, sadly, it's been chopped to pieces and no complete version exists. Third, it's the final film of Lloyd Hamilton, a comic who drank himself to death the following year...and he looks pretty sickly in this film. These things make it a tough film to watch for his fans.

The story is set on a cruise ship but the plot is mostly missing due to the editing by some unknown persons. Hamilton is aboard and keeps getting into trouble...most of which seems pretty contrived and unfunny. A final marriage scene seems to come from out of no where and the film ends.

This is a very sad final film for a man who could be very funny. Here, he's not especially funny and also appears sick and much older than 43. He even looks as if he's wearing a lot of makeup and lipstick to try to hide his ill health.

Fun with Lloyd Hamilton in his last starring role
comedyshorts-126 July 2012
Erroneously dated as 1931, this Lloyd Hamilton 1934 poverty row budget comedy may be his last starring role. He died January 19, 1935.

The newspaper shown in the film is the LA Evening Herald. It has an NRA seal with the headline 3 LA KIDNAPPERS GET LIFE. May 28, 1934 is the date published.

Plot has Lloyd in pursuit of his girl aboard ship. Dad wants her to marry a different suitor. There are some classic Hamilton moments especially with Arthur Housman and Gertrude Astor.

The question arises if WEDDING BELLES was ever released theatrically.

In the early 1940s, 16mm prints were struck for rental on this evasive title.

Don't miss an opportunity to see this film.

Note: The Museum of Modern Art list this title in their inventory, but are unable to locate the print when asked to view it.
