This is kind of a bizarre 16-minute animated short but full of visual treats and very likable. The story is simple, and told by "Grandma Kay:" how a crow, using a chicken-hawk, helped build a campfire which, unsaid, led to people discovering fire. Yeah, just mythology but I like the way she told the story. Grandma Kay apparently is a famous storyteller in this remote town, passing on the legends of her culture to the teens, some of whom appeared interested, others not. It is set in the Canadian Yukon.
The joy of this animated short is not just the story but the beautiful watercolors and the surprises of seeing framed paintings come to life. Also cool is the change from color to black-and-white and back-and-forth, and seeing the neat expressions on the humans' faces.....and more.
This movie won the 2009 American Indian Festival Award and the 2009 World Indigenous Film Award for Best Animation.
I saw this as part of the DVD titled "Animation Express" which is available on regular and Blu-Ray discs. If you have the equipment, I would advise getting this on Blu-Ray as the artwork is stunning.
