That's what Scorpion King director Chuck Russel calls his costume designer Jim Bloomfield: the king of imaginative period clothing in his field. When Chuck hired Jim to work on this spin-off from The Mummy Returns, both men knew the look of the film had to be imaginative, but still have it's own believability. Bloomfield chimes in to say how he loves to create his own world by taking ideas from historical books and giving it a sexy, modern look. After all, he claims, The Scorpion King is not supposed to be a museum reproduction of 5.000 years ago and the actual artifacts available from that time are so minuscule that liberties could be taken.
JB set up his own costume workshop right there on the Universal back-lot. Then he send out his 'shoppers' to buy every skin of leather available in Los Angeles and turn them into prehistoric and unusual looking fashion for beautiful, well trained and suntanned Californians to wear. You see, every thread of all the principle wardrobe was manufactured by Bloomberg and co. Sure, there are plenty of warehouses in Hollywood filled with Roman legionnaire outfits, but nowhere can you find the fashions of 3.000 B.C. Gomorra. The only exceptions were some helmets and of course some swords, but all of the costumes were completely new. And now they're probably hanging around somewhere in beautiful downtown Burbank waiting for another Scorpion King sequel (or prequel) to come around.
