A Mother's Love

The title of this disturbing documentary has to be a sick joke. We often hear the word monster or some such appellation used in connection with serial killers, but it is more than fitting here. One contributor called Theresa Knorr a woman without a soul. What kind of woman could murder two of her own daughters and use her sons to do it? That was after murdering her first husband, a crime for which she was tried and acquitted.

There is more than the usual psychobabble herein, but do we really need phrases like personality disorder, or facile rationalisations to explain or explain away evil? This is a woman who is among the worst of the worst. We hear from among others her lawyer. In October 1995, Theresa Knorr was sentenced to two consecutive life terms and will be eligible for parole when she is eighty. The State went extremely leniently on her two sons, which in one sense is understandable because they didn't have much of a benchmark to measure their actions against, but they must surely have realised their mother had gone too far, and should not have allowed her to drag them down with her.
