I Love 1997
Prismark106 October 2019
Melinda Messenger reviews 1997. The Swindon superstar went from advertising double glazing to a page 3 pin up to a television personality. It was all down to her two best friends and a winning personality. All the time she stuck with her boyfriend who obviously had a makeover by the time this program was broadcast.

As for the women. If they were not rooting for Bridget Jones Diary which went from a newspaper column to a best selling book. A glorified Mills & Boon according to Germaine Greer. They got eye candy in the form of the topless Diet Coke man who would past by the workplace at 11:30 in the morning each day. One of the models who played a builder was called Lucky Vanous. The Diet Coke ad was a lucky break for him.

Most of the show was taken up by the agit-pop band Chumbawamba. They were around for years declaring class warfare and got a novelty hit with Tubthumping. They also decided to drench the deputy Prime Minister John Prescott at the Brit Awards. That is John Prescott, a working class lad, who went to a comprehensive school, got a job as a ship's waiter, a left wing union activist who became Deputy PM. So much for picking the right targets eh!

1997 was also the year that Viagra got approved and hit the market. It was a big boon for certain men and Richard & Judy took the rise out of it in This Morning.

Unfortunately there was no mention of the end of 18 years of Tory rule and the Labour landslide at the General Election or the death of Prince Diana.

Warning: Spoilers
I always like to watch programmes looking back on moments from TV, music and film, e.g. 100 Greatest shows, and this offering from the BBC was a very interesting look at a memorable period of time. Hosted by model Melinda Messenger, this show looks back at the year 1997, with topics including: the film The Full Monty, the wearing of thongs, "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba, the "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" Diet Coke adverts, the rise of Melinda Messenger, the kids' TV programme Teletubbies, the newspaper column turned book Bridget Jones's Diary, the use of Viagra, "Smack My Bitch Up" by The Prodigy, and the TV programme Driving School. Celebrity contributions include: Ronnie Baxter, Max Beesley, Marcus Brigstocke, Chumbawumba's Dunstan Bruce, Natalie Casey, Jo Caulfield, Chris Cowey, Jackie Clune, Kevin Day, Andrew Davenport, Mark Eccleston, Helen Fielding, Toby Foster, Michelle Gayle, Clare Gohram, Germaine Greer, The Full Monty's Steve Huison, Jodie Kidd, Melinda Messenger, Trevor Nelson, Chumbawumba's Alice Nutter, Jenny Powell, Rowland Rivron, Jenny Ross, The Full Monty's William Snape, Lisa Snowdon, The Full Monty's Hugo Speer, Mark Steel, Peter Stringfellow, Dave Thompson, Johnny Vegas, Chumbawumba's Boff Whalley, Terry Wogan, Anne Wood, Gina Yashere and many more. Very good!
