Episode 1
Prismark105 October 2022
The premise of Inside Man seems to be. Anyone can become a murderer, given the right circumstances.

So says Jefferson Grieff (Stanley Tucci) a criminologist in death row in an American prison. He has been jailed for killing his wife.

In his spare time which Grieff has plenty of. He solves crimes, the modern Sherlock way.

Back in Britain, affable vicar Harry Watling (David Tennant) finds himself making a series of wrong decisions once he decides to take possession of his verger's memory stick that contains porn.

To Harry's horror, his son maths tutor Janice Fife (Dolly Wells) discovers that the memory stick has child porn. She wrongly believes that Harry's son is looking at the child porn.

Written by Steven Moffat. The first episode is a mish mash of Moffat's writing styles, specifically Sherlock.

The prison scenes are the strongest as Grieff bounces with fellow inmate Dillon Kempton (Atkins Estimond.) He has a photographic memory and acts as Grieff's human recorder when solving other people's criminal issues.

Harry's story is a bit too much to take in. In a sense he is both naive and overbearing. Unable to articulate properly when the pressure mounts on him.

Interesting, slightly confused start.

The Death row Detective is approached by a journalist, a journalist that's loosely connected to a crime in a sleepy English village.

This has Stephen Moffat all over it, if you've say watching Dracula or Sherlock, scratching your head and wondering what's going on, then you will be doing some of that here. It's quite a complex first episode, but it's very watchable.

A few issues putting the pieces together, and some of the connections are tenuous to say the least, I found it so strange, and so hard to believe that a Vicar would behave in such a strange way. I suppose the parallels being that nobody has the idea to kill, it just happens, is that what he was trying to put across.

I adore David Tennant, arguably one of my favourite actors of all, but here the presence of Stanley Tucci is what makes this very watchable, plus the music.

The best scene for me had to be Senator's interview in the prison, I found the details around the payments so interesting.

Janice was just irritating, hopefully she'll develop a little.

6/10.

What a strange episode!

This episode has a good start and it seems like the show has some potential. I was definitely curious about the storyline of the inmate who solves cases. I don't know what's the story behind him killing his wife and sure it doesn't sound very realistic. It's like the journalist asked, why him? Why would people come to him? He isn't the only smart person in the world so why? And how do they even find him? I think it could have worked better if the cases had come from a detective or something like that but even if it's not very realistic I was still intrigued. The cast is definitely good so I was willing to give it a chance.

With that said, the story of the vicar turned quite ridiculous really really fast!! It was so bizarre that it felt like I was suddenly watching a parody. What was that?? The concept that anyone of us can become a murderer under the right circumstances is actually pretty good but not like that. These specific circumstances are both unnatural and ridiculous. Both the vicar and the math tutor didn't act like normal people!! Now, I haven't seen the second episode but assuming that the journalist is bringing the case of her missing friend (because she received a blurry picture from her and now she isn't answering the phone) is even more ridiculous!

I don't know what to think of this show. This episode was so bizarre I might actually continue to watch just to see if I'm missing something.

Harold Pinter is not dead -
jasperredhat2 November 2022
  • he is only hiding. And this hellzapoppin' hologram from the far side made my morning. Guess I was not the only one trying to figure out what the first scene was about. To no use. It's all elevated. And the characters bump into each other like radio-cars on Luna Park in the dark. It is refreshing to be exposed to this mumbo jumbo. And leave all the neatly corrected and arranged realism at bay. Now, remember, I am commenting on the first episode. I am a bit crestfallen when it comes to the title of it all. Inside Man? Is "Entering Hades" taken? Or "Your Light Is Out". Well now, no matter what happens in the future, I'll be treasuring this episode like the resurrection of Harold Pinter.

My suggestion skip all the ridiculously unbelievable plot points with David Tenant
moshgod13 January 2023
Such a shame the scenes with Stanley Tucci are actually pretty good and watchable but the show completely fails on the completely unbelievable story line with the Victor. Like seriously from 10 mins in call and ambulance, help the woman and explain the bind you were in trying to protect your congregation member. Victors wife going straight to let's murder her an hour after the incident. Seems likely character development! Not!

I just fast forwarded all the vicar, math teacher and wife sciences and the rest wash ok.

Stanley, his cell mate and reporter have good dynamic and script is good. Did 2 different people write this show and then some idiot just merged them together?!! Who knows!

Good start but what the hell
marcosarferreira26 July 2023
So, it started really well vir then just turns up to be a joke . The most crazy and stupid decision after decision

I truly can't believe the logic behind it . No one in its perfect mind would decide to do what the priest decides to do

. I'm going to waste my time and carry on with the series but I truly feel it will be a joke after joke

Well, not only bad decisions from one character , but all . All are ridiculous in some of their decisions

I need to write more characters but overall, people, keep your hopes low because it doesn't look living up to the investment

I'll try to carry on and give a final opinion . I can only hope for smarter writing.

Ridiculous
yigitturan3 November 2022
It is as if they opened a contest for finding the most out-of-touch-with-reality screenplay that can ever be written and Inside Man was the winner by a long margin! Nothing from the dialogues to the acting is somehow relatable or convincing in any way. I hardly was able to finish the full episode and I only did because I was curious to find out how much more ridiculous can this series get. I usually watch a series in its entirety to have a more accurate decision on its quality but this time I won't be watching the remainder of the episodes, since it will feel like it is an insult to my intellect. What a complete waste of time!

Tension Before Laffs
Pequod881 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Anyone can become a murderer, given the right circumstances. The circumstances in episode one involve a strong set up that, in a flash, devolves into a Monty Python skit. I almost expected the vicar to turn to the camera and say, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Would the math tutor look up from the bottom of the stairs to the cellar and say, "It's a fair cop"? I had seen the mixed reviews but gave this a go, as Tucci heads the cast as a prison sleuth. The key to the premise working is a horrifying chain of events that turns the unlikely killer's life into a nightmare. This fails in such a monumental way that we are left with half cerebral drama, half farcical comedy. Kudos to Tennant for keeping a straight face as the misfire misfires. "Grab a shovel, honey. I'll explain while we dig a grave." Laugh loud at the unintended comedy, or weep for what might have been. Viewers will gasp at the horror, although not as Moffat intended.
