The second episode of David Attenborough's latest gem 'A Perfect Planet' "The Sun" explores how the sun's effects shape life on earth, and what effect it has on the environment and the inhabitants. A topic that has not been covered in this much depth in nature documentaries for some while. Anybody who loved the series' previous episode "Volcano", personally thought that was brilliant, will undoubtedly expect a lot from "The Sun."
High expectations were met and even exceeded here. Everything that was so great in "Volcano" is here and done every bit as brilliantly. There were many remarkable moments, as one very much expects from any Attenborough documentary, and one unexpected line in the narration, and a lot was learned here. Actually got more out of the watching "The Sun" about this topic than in any of my school biology classes, which is a big compliment.
Expectedly, "The Sun" looks wonderful. Some truly awe-inspiring shots, in namely the Arctic wolves and musk oxen sequence. The scenery has sheer beauty but is also uncompromising. The music has a wide mix of emotions without being over-bearing or over-stressing, anything involving the Arctic wolves is particularly well done.
Attenborough always delivers when it comes to narration and presenting delivery, his decades long experience always apparent. His voice is so fruity and soothing and one of those listen to for hours types of voices, his delivery sincere and direct. The writing is very informative, with a perfect mix of nature and science, and never stops being engaging, was not expecting the "twice its body length" line and it did have that "did you hear that correctly" quality.
Some amazing footage can be seen here. And not just the captivating Arctic wolves and musk oxen sequence, that of the wolves and Arctic hares is a sight to behold and have certainly not seen fig wasps portrayed quite this way either. Not to mention the pure gold scene with the monkeys. The animals, prey and predator, are fascinating and easy to care about without being too humanised, the wolves being the scene stealers.
Really appreciated the hard work of the crew and what they have to go through, in fact the making of part of the episode is perhaps the best of the series, and the element that some found heavy-handed is very relevant and worth addressing.
