Better than I was expecting
SG23133 December 2022
I wasn't sure what to expect when viewing this feature. A friend asked me to go with and although it's clearly an independent film, some things really made it worth watching.

I believe it was made to look older as it was a bit of a haze drab feel, some shadowed faces, but that part didn't bother me much for its era. The gentleman that played the evil Roman leader really knocked it out of the park, excellent actor. The young lady you see grow up in the film truly deserves an award for her performance, not a dry eye in the theater by the end. Although I liked the story, some parts were not as clear to me or left me wanting to see more of what happened.

You can see a lot of hard work went into this film. It shows from the wardrobe, to the fight scenes, in the music, and more. Definitely watch it until the end!

Loved Aliana

Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent back in time movie with a good story. It had a really good look to make us feel like we were right there with them.. There were some slower parts with long conversations that took away from the flow in my opinion but the fight scenes were nicely done.

There was a beautiful young girl with a great part of the story. This actress told it so well. She had us in tears! I wish we saw more of her story once she left camp and why oh why didn't he go with her, but I guess that's what made her stronger. If the evil Roman commander saw her face to face I don't think he would have wanted her killed either. There was other good acting too but wow that actress knocked it out of the park.

Well-done!
emeryndorman2 December 2022
Eyes of a Roman is an overall very nice film. The storyline is engaging and each performer does a good job maintaining the film's pace. The musical score is outstanding--it really highlights many of the intense scenes throughout.

The costumes are well done and the film's location was well-suited for the story. It would have been nice to see some variety in the overall color grade--every once in a while the scene would appear to be a little washed out or flat--but otherwise, beautiful filmography. Impressive movie and looking forward to seeing future projects from this director. Congratulations to all cast and crew involved!

Aside from poor quality also an insult to history
hgfe3431 March 2024
Sometimes I find random movies to try on Tubi, most of them suck and I laugh at.

Eyes if a Roman wasn't just a bad movie to laugh at, it was offensive to history and had me internally screaming at why the filmmakers made such poor decisions at every turn.

From the unnecessary shots of 90 BC "Italy" that's blatantly a global warming/deforestation effected Texas field to the actors directed on a dull quality as if they're in a pornographic film to costumes, hairstyles, and sets that were pulled out of a "popular styling of 2021" article to continuous plot holes and unlikeable characters to a poorly construed script to poor lighting and cinematography to rewriting history to outrageously dumb "fight" scenes this is just an abomination of a film.

All of these red flags are without going into the terrible production value and lack of post production. The film seems to have not been professionally edited, recorded, mixed, colored, or had anything else to polish it. Either no one was hired for these important jobs or it was done on a whim with no care.

A beautiful and well implemented score could've helped but that part seems to be pretty carelessly composed and matched as if it was something the director almost didn't remember to include. The fact a score exists may be the film's strongest point but is still useless.

This film isn't just poorly made, the story is a made up boring side plot that turns into the whole movie and any true events are exaggerated or factually off; the director seemed to have deemed historical accuracy completely unnecessary.

If you're someone who likes to laugh at low budget movies this may be for you but if you also enjoy history this may just be so bad it should be avoided completely.

YES! This lived up to the hype
blondietimestwo24 January 2023
Right off the bat I was swimming is high expectations. I researched film, read the reviews and watch the trailer. I was pumped. But was I disappointed? No, No I was not.

We start off where a Roman commander finds a young boy, Atticus.

Atticus turns out to be a Spartacus sympathizer killing his commanding officer in order to save a little girl, Aelieana. This actress, Ella Morrow, is really talented and phenomenal just to watch.

If you like historical dramas then you will love this film. It doesn't feel low budget and re minds me of the last 2 seasons Spartacus the TV show that is no longer on Netflix.

This film is worthy of a Netflix debut and I hope it gets it.

Indie Roman Epic
wager-888921 December 2022
Usually Indie and Epic don't always go together, but what was pulled off with Eyes of the Roman can only be described as such.

Filmed in the Hill Country of Texas, Eyes of a Roman is the story of Marcus Crassus and Spartacus told from a different perspective, and how their war affected both the Romans and the "Barbarians."

Everything was top notch, and a surprise for what the cast and crew were able to pull off with the indie budget. The acting, score, and scope of the story was extremely engaging.

I was fortunate enough to catch this movie at one of the limited screenings and it shined on the big screen. If you have the opportunity you should seek it out. It's worth your time.

Something for everyone
les-best13023 December 2022
This movie has something for everyone. History buffs will appreciate the period detail involved, but these details wisely did not override the plot. Action aficionados will appreciate the 300esq editing of the fight scenes, but the fight scenes do not dominate the feel.

The writer/director weaves a complex human story of allegiance and loyalty, and asks the age old question of whether nature or nurture plays the larger role in our foundational beliefs.

An imperfect movie, yet so many superior elements are included to belie the independent label. You will see something new each time you watch.

Award-worthy Indie Roman Film
NicoleE7020 December 2022
Eyes of a Roman is an impressive Indie film shot entirely in Texas on a shoestring budget. Charismatic Writer and Director, CJ Goodwyn, assembled a dynamic group of over 200 cast and crew who were passionate about the project, spending hours on physical training, rehearsal, and logistics. I met CJ several years ago and we have worked together on various projects. He is very dedicated to the craft and produces a high quality product.

The film has excellent visual impact with intense and realistic fight scenes. Worthy of Indie film awards, it has many salient nuggets for fans of the period. There were many memorable scenes with strong and moving performances depicting internal conflicts that are relevant today.

The musical score is stellar and serves as a superb backdrop with perfect placement. I was impressed with the wardrobe and weaponry, and can only imagine the coordination involved for such a large cast.

I am a fan of period pieces and will say that the film would have benefited from a bit more script editing and actor fine-tuning to include removal of dialogue and mannerisms not correct for the period.

This Texas film is sure to raise the eyebrows of Roman film fans. I'm excited to see more from Trigoodwyn Productions and CJ Goodwyn. Helmets off to the cast and crew for a job well done!

Roman epic shot in Texas!?
ianwilson-186166 December 2022
You have to hand it to the Director, CJ Goodwyn... to shoot a feature length, period epic set in ancient history, on an Indie budget but with a big budget feel.....in Texas!! Just incredible. Some great acting, notably from Les Best and the director himself and a real visual treat with the costumes and props. The musical score is excellent, giving the feel of movies such as Gladiator and of course the editing really sets this apart. As I said, this is an Indie film....not a Hollywood blockbuster, but it delivers in so many ways, you will not be disappointed. Can't wait to see what comes next from Trigoodwyn productions.

A Well told story
pfoster-scimage5 December 2022
I enjoyed watching this film, the film was consistent with the story and pacing and the music. It has elements of inspiration from Gladiator. I don't know that for a fact but it is my observation.

This film really has its moments where it pulls on the power of your emotions to tell the story in a more powerful way through music and the camera. I loved the concept, I felt that it answered all the critical questions throughout the film. Les Best was a solid Antagonist and Ella Marrow has a positive future in acting.

My wife and I attended the premier of this film and she really enjoyed it which is saying a lot. She falls asleep in theaters all the time.

Everytime I see a new film from CJ Goodwyn they get better and better. There are a lot of positives to take from this film.

Beautifully shot, excellent work by the crew
jameswrobinson-862571 December 2022
The film was shot in the hill country of Texas, and the crew behind this film did a masterful job. Seeing how the cameramen, sound, director, assistant director, and makeup/hair work all in unison on location was a joy to watch. Watching the film, the images are so crisp and vivid, you will wish you could rewind to see them again. Knowing how the director held regular sessions to coordinate 60+ actors through fight choreography training, and how the director encouraged active participation were some of the highlights of being part of this film. Many people contributed blood, sweat, and smiles to make the action scenes of the movie worth the watch, and it shows. Congratulations to the cast and crew.

Nicely done independent film
tam-134151 December 2022
While attending the red carpet, you could see how close everyone was that was involved with this film. It was nice to learn all the efforts that went into the behind the scenes and hear from those involved.

The unique storyline really captured me. The overall look of everyone on film was nicely done and amazing to see. Some of the acting really draws you into the characters making you feel the story even more. At times my blood would boil and other times my tears were unstoppable. I liked the history connections and the views from different aspects in that time. The ending was really powerful!

Great story, impressive visuals!
therealbdanderson3 December 2022
As far as I know there have been no Roman-themed, period pieces filmed in Texas.... until now! Eyes Of A Roman takes place during the period of the Third Servile War, also known as the last battle between Spartacus's barbarians and the powerful Roman army led by Marcus Crassus. This is the story of a war-orphaned boy, Atticus, who is raised in the shadow of Rome and bears witness to atrocities that his own family endured carried out by a calloused, unmerciful leader.... the very man who raised him.

Atticus joins the ranks of the Roman army, the world's most elite fighting force. He soon learns that evil acts can be justified...if they are done in the name of Rome. As Rome marches toward the final battle against Spartacus and his rebels, Atticus must make a choice between what he knows to be right and what he has been trained to do as a son of Rome.

With 300-esque fight scenes, epic soundtrack and sweeping shots of the terrain, Eyes Of A Roman is a great experience. I will definitely be seeing it again!

An epic Roman adventure action movie shot in Texas
funwrenn1 December 2022
Got to hand it to the cast and crew of this film! Not only does it have all the feels and excitement of a Hollywood Blockbuster, the independent vibe and look adds to the whole experience. This was a labor of love and it shows. Great action, editing, acting, directing, costumes, and story. The score and sound effects are incredible as well. Can't wait to own this and add it to my list of favorite Texas shot films. CJ continues to make better and better films, and to jump from horror to epic action adventure is a huge leap that most wouldn't dare to attempt. Thankfully, CJ has shown it can be done. And well.
