Cut this low budget film some slack, the effects were cool
ruthnoakes6 September 2010
Today I watched Scarce (2008), directed by Jesse T. Cook and John Geddes, a film about a group of snowboarders on vacation. During a snow storm they are forced to seek refuge, but little did they know they are safer out in the storm. The people who grant them refuge are cannibals, surviving on what they 'hunt' throughout the winter.

Overall a pointless film with a very slow start, but the effects were cool, especially because it was on a low budget. I mean, of course I only watched it for the blood; I wouldn't sit down and watch a film with that premise if I were looking for an intellectually challenging experience.

Not a bad film, but should have been about 3 Canadian snowboarders instead (like they actually were)
reeves200211 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The movie opens with a naked bum(homeless man) running through the woods scared out of his mind being chased by something. And then there is a party scene which was a bit unnecessary. It should have started out with the 3 thirty something snow boarder guys on the road after the naked guy and bypass all the stuff from the stupid party. But it was just an excuse to show more T&A.And what was with making the 3 guys from Jersey? And even supplying them with a car with an American flag and New Jersey plates. I could tell right away none of those unknown actors were American. They totally sounded Canadian! The only one who could pass was Steve Warren who played the hilarious and nutty Ivan character, but I think Steve was the only American actor in this indie film. What pisses me off about a lot of Canadian cinema (especially this one) is that they are never based in Canada. This is an insult because we have large well known cities, small towns and backwoods etc,so this movie could have easily been based in the Province it was filmed. However I think there was one real shot of Colorado which was nice, so a better way to do it would have been to make the 3 snowboarders Canadians traveling through America instead which is what they obviously were! I don't think it would have hurt the film at all,in fact would have made it more believable. I don't get what it is with Canadian film makers! This was my main issue about this movie otherwise it was interesting and I started to get into it after the party scene. It seemed more like a satire then a horror movie.I just found everything about it amusing. The gore was good and disturbing at times. The most disgusting scene to me was when they stopped at a redneck diner and what the cook did to their food.I nearly got sick! I did sit through the whole movie without turning it off so I guess it wasn't all bad.

Definitely worth a viewing for the serious horror fan!!
ikestar4423 October 2008
This movie is a rare gem in the movie world. It is the first work of a young film making duo that has actually made it to theatres and now on to DVD with wide distribution. Kudos to the writer's/producers for this remarkable feat in itself!! The movie itself... alright, it's not the best movie I've ever seen, but it is Definitely not the worst either!! (Open Water, Last Winter... come on, those were horrible!!) What we get to see here is the rudimentary offering from a couple of real guys with a common dream. The production is good, the effects are excellent, and the rest of the movie really isn't bad. Sure, there are some "cliché" aspects; crazy amounts of profanity, seemingly pointless nudity, (did I just say that??) and the acting is certainly not 'A-List'... but the end result is a raw work of art that if nothing else leaves us wanting to see where these guys go from here. At the VERY least, one has to appreciate the countless hours of hard work and determination that lead to the reward of this DVD. How many small town folk can say that their movie made the big screen?? SCARCE may be a rough around the edges inaugural offering, but I for sure can't wait for the next one!!

The Hills Have made a Wrong Turn with Hostel Chainsaws...
terrible29 January 2009
Yikes!

Another low budget Indie depicting backwood folk whom like to eat unsuspecting (idiot) victims. Not exactly a breathe of fresh air, but at least they shot it in the snow, I'll give'em a few points for that... Writer / Director's Jesse Cook and John Geddes have obviously watched their share of 100's of better films with this same story-line, but figured they'd better make their own (and thank God for that!)... "Scarce" is just that, scarce is any real creativity, originality or acting talent (wait till you get a load of the dinner scene... Duh!). Their big name actor is Steve Warren, whom appears to be making a living as a movie extra, and it shows in his lack of acting ability . In fact, no-one in this film has any acting experience and it shows though-out this unpolished turd. On a good note, the gore is admirable but unfortunately we have to sit through mind-numbing stupidity in order to see it...

Save yourself the aggravation...

Awful. Seriously awful.
kittingrrl9 October 2008
This is the bastard son of Hostel and some stupid random cannibal movie. Bad acting, worse plot. The story is chock full of dumb clichés, weak plot points and stuff that just plain doesn't make sense. Characters behave in ways that only if they were written really badly would. Pointless shots of the bad guys being *bad*. The ending was a joke right? No one would actually make that dumb of an ending. Oh wait, I watched it, it did end like that. I have to say the effects were pretty good, it was gross and the gross was nicely done. Just not worth watching for that alone even if you are a grue hound. Stay away from this stinker.

A lame hybrid of 'Wolf Creek' and 'The Most Dangerous Game'
Shattered_Wake1 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
On a snowboard trip in the Rocky Mountains (and the following roadtrip), three 40-year-old Canadian guys (oh, sorry, according to the movie they're twentysomethings from Jersey) become the victims of a pair of cannibalistic locals.

The film opens strangely: A guy that looks like a bulimic Jesus is running naked through the woods, cut up and bleeding from what looks like a rough torture. Without showing much, we assume (from his howling scream) that he is caught by whatever was pursuing him. From there, we move to some kind of house party where a few unattractive middle-aged men posing as twentysomethings hook up with girls so far out of their league they're not even in the same sport. After a good bit of drinking, drugs, sex, and some bathroom humour, we move to the actual plot which really didn't need the previous twenty minutes: The three guys, after crashing the car in middle-of-nowhere Pennsylvania, become prey for some backwoods nutjobs. One of the most damaging elements of this film is most evident here, in the first twenty minutes. The worst parts are the acting and writing. In this genre, those two technical elements aren't always the most important. I mean, look how much Dario Argento has accomplished and he can't write to save his life. Unfortunately, the guys behind 'Scarce' are building the entire film on those two things and they're certainly no Argento. Anyway, what matters here is the horror. Luckily, the film does manage to get a good bit of horror; but, mostly, it just feels like gore & violence & torture for the sake of it. There's no real cause or reason for the majority of it other than to show what the filmmakers were capable of. Sadly, they weren't capable of much. The gore, while excessive, was far from believable and was far from grotesque, as it seems they thought it was. Essentially, what the film ends up turning into is a strange hybrid of midwest Wolf Creek mixed with The Most Dangerous Game. Some of the hunting scenes are interesting, but they just end with an extremely lame and unthrilling climax. Overall, it's just a pretty basic, below-average torture flick without much merit except the funny Canadian accents and some poorly done gore.

Final verdict: 3.75/10. Meh.

A Record Breaker -- Bad!
jimhill693 February 2010
I can honestly say this is by far the worst movie I have ever seen and I have seen probably 10 times more films than others my age as a film professional.

It had no chance from the beginning, as it's script was consistent with the overall badness; not clever, no shape, no depth... It wasn't scary. It was just gross. Even the fake blood was done badly. The camera work and print quality was as bad as it gets too. It seemed that every instinct one would naturally have in order to make a good film, this filmmaker chose the opposite position, perhaps thinking it would make his work "original". In a world where it is difficult to be originally "good", he has achieved unmatched originality at being "bad".

Steve Warren, the star, is as creepy as he needs to be, but he has no room to make this thing stink less. The two young men co-stars were competing to see how far to one extreme to the other they could go with their emotional tones, from flat to overly animated, as if a lesson in what NOT to do.

One would think if it was so bad, one would at least be entertained by it in some bizarre way, but no, it was unbearable, impossible to watch, and sadly, I always watch a movie from beginning to end. In this case, I may need years of therapy to recover.

I can say there is one thing this film could do well; it can reduce your appetite. So, dieters, go for it, daily and get skinny.

horrid horrid horrid, r u sure Ulli didn't direct this?
kroork24 February 2009
well i saw the trailer for this movie and i Had to watch it. so this morning i sat down to what i thought was gonna be a brutal realistic horror movie. But what i got was a laughable Ulli Lommel type movie. now people r spouting that the gore in this movie is amazing, and u know what its actually quite good. but honestly thats where the compliments end. the acting was so awful i wouldn't believe the director would finish a take with his actors and actually thought he got the shot. in my opinion i would rather never made a movie then make one horrid horrid horrid acting. i TRIED to just let the "acting" go and just focus the movie as a whole, but it was so bad i couldn't. i ended up skippin along the whole way just to get to parts with NO TALKING. it baffles my mind how anyone would let this piece of cr*p to be made, but even more so that some people actually LIKED IT. the only positive about it is the gore. now i am a gore hound, but even that could not get me to somewhat enjoy it.

so in closing the movie sucked, the acting was even worse and if u liked it u might wanna check out all the works by Ulli Lommel, specifically BTK Killer.

A Snow Boarding Slasher Flick! Very Entertaining!
kyleallen_918 February 2009
I recently watched this flick online and let me tell you, it was pretty awesome. Some excellent kills and chase scenes. This movie sort of reminded me of Wrong Turn and Shredder. It had the snow boarding part, like in shredder, then it had the cannibalism part, like in Wrong Turn. It also had a pretty decent storyline about a group of friends who are stoked for a weekend of snowboarding and partying, only to be stranded in the mountains. When they come across a lodge, they decide to seek shelter, only to be stalked by a group of vicious cannibals. If you aren't a huge fan of extreme violence and gore, then might want to skip out on this flick, but I do recommend it to other hardcore horror fans.

Great Indie Horror
Nightmare-Maker9 January 2009
I watched SCARCE last night and I thought it was a great film. Simple story, three guys go on a snowboarding trip, crash their car in the middle of nowhere(the whole country is in the middle of a snow blizzard). A strange guy turns up to offer help...but he turns out to be a hunting cannibal!

All in all, this was just up my street, it had a good atmosphere, the acting was OK, and if it's gore you are after - look no further! The Brothers Gore have done a superb job on this.

I have read a few negative reviews on this on IMDb, one said the gore effects were bad...are you blind!

This is and Independent horror film, and one of the best I have seen. The guys who made this Jesse T Cook and John Geddes, wrote, directed and starred in this...kudos to those guys. Didn't Peter Jackson start like that with Bad Taste!!!

Brilliant effort a strong 7.5 out of 10

It's really pretty bad
acrutherford7 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The film begins poorly with an awful teen student party, where no kind of relationship between the characters is built up. Forgive me for saying but it looks more like the directors used making a film as an excuse to get a couple of girls to take their tops off and try and make getting drunk and smoking pot look cool. The whole sequence adds nothing to the film and once the guys are on the road you might as well have not watched it.

A lot of the outdoor scenes were clearly not shot in the snow, instead they used a poor, computer generated, filter effect. As far as gore effects go they are quite good, but am I expected to believe that a guy with a broken leg and the flesh cut off his back to the spine, could walk and crawl through snow?

It's not worth watching really, there's nothing interesting about this film and there's way too many other films that have simply done the same better. If you like gore there may be some enjoyment here for you but don't expect to be impressed.

Gruesome and Violent and a lot of fun!
bivmanfor207 November 2008
I finally was able to track this movie down. I had read a lot about it on the web and it sounded really cool. Snowboarders fall prey to cannibals in the woods. Sounds like my kind of movie and it I was not disappointed. It started out a little slow but picked up in the middle and didn't let go. For a low budget indie film it had really good gore effects. You could tell a lot of hard work was put into making this. I mean I don't know if I could run around the in the dead of winter in Canada in nothing but a t-shirt and boxers. When I was watching that I could feel the cold. Over all, a good horror movie with plenty of violence and gore! I would recommend this to any one who is into horror movies.

Better than it should have been.
FrightMeter20 January 2009
By all accounts, "Scarce" should bore any avid horror fan to tears. It is a plot we have seen over and over and over again, and in the end, offers nothing new. However, the film does so many things well that it ends up being an enjoyable slasher film that is better than a lot of stuff I have seen make it into theaters lately.

The film starts badly. In fact, I rolled my eyes more than once and was prepared to shut it off. We see a bunch of college aged guys at a huge party drinking, trying to get laid and spouting of some bad dialogue. However, this only lasts for about five minutes, when we flash forward to the next morning. We meet our three main characters--all typical college guys--who are heading back home from a short vacation of snowboarding in Colorado. They banter back and forth during the drive and eventual hit a huge snowstorm in Pennsylvania. They stop at a diner, where the have an encounter with some locals after asking for directions. Obviously, any horror fan knows where this leads, as the directions they are given are bogus and they end up crashed in the middle of nowhere in a blizzard. In the crash, one guy breaks his leg, so the other two venture out to find help. They get to a cabin where they meet up with a seemingly friendly local who offers them food and place to stay. Well, turns out (surprise!) this local is actually a cannibal, who, with the help of a few of his buddies, kills travelers and harvests their meat to make it through the scarce winters.

The film is the combination of so many films I have seen from, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" to "Hostel" to "Wrong Turn" to "Calvaire." However, the production is top notch and the filmmakers know how to create tension and suspense using wide camera shots and angles. Additionally, our protagonists actually are pretty likable, and though they make some dumb choices, we can't help but to root for them. The gore is pretty well done and plentiful enough to satisfy gore hounds. We get chopped up bodies, slit throats, decapitations, and shotgun blasts. The setting of the film is foreboding and I really did "feel" the cold, particularly the last 10 minutes of the film when our main characters are running for their lives during the wind and snow in nothing but their boxer and T-shirts! It is a scene that is many ways reminded me of the highly stylized and effective final scenes of the French film "Calvaire" and I think is done equally well here.

My biggest qualm with the film is that I HATED the ending. Too many recent horror flicks are using this "twist" to be different and effective, when it is actually becoming a predictable cliché. I was actually pretty invested in the two main characters and really wanted to scream when the film ended the way it did.

Maybe I am becoming too soft in my reviews, but I actually enjoyed this film quite a bit and highly recommend it, despite the low IMDb rating and reviews here. If you can get past the beginning (and the end) of this film, it is a very well done and competently directed film that ends up being a lot better than it had any reason to be.

I don't know how anyone gave above a three
lancer1651 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This makes forty year old ,poor, slasher/gore etc movies look like genuine classic pieces of work.

I was glued to the screen because my carer left me in my multifunctional wheelchair to go upstairs and entertain my partner. They were clever enough to have switched the battery off so I could not call for them to switch the torture off.

Seriously I wonder what proper paid critics made of this.

Many years ago when I saw the early slash gore movies which included Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Jason and Halloween stuff I was amazed at the low standard of acting then. But in hindsight I see that if anyone is impressed with this 'Scarce' in any way it means that the old stuff were works of masters.

I noticed that the 'Slob' was getting a hard on for one of the potential meals. That might have, if followed through been useful as his 'climax' might have been better than the storyline ending.

All well and good these endings where the victims die and the perpetrators are able to continue but just who is telling the story? The previous plausible ,as a piece of entertaining cinema, human 'cannibal' story I saw was 'RAVENOUS' but then we are talking about a completely different movie making and acting playing field.

This SCARCE is selling in shops you know as a so called legitimate piece of movie entertainment.

BTW the 'snowboarding references' completely passed me by. I would have expected them to involve these bits of wood as part of the viewable story to show their skills,(they rode the bikes in THE HILLS HAVE EYES) and also as part of the escape.

I wonder if I could move with a seriously compounded fracture of my tibia especially after so much torture and having my back exposed in something akin to the unpleasant beginnings of a VIKING style blood eagle torture.

I also wonder if the three depraved cannibals knew about the less than 'chef Ramsay' abilities of the local diner cook and his thieving floor staff. The ability to even chop up a piece of meat etc seemed beyond the actor and director to make look realistic.

If Rich Hall a now estranged US comedian who lives VERY HAPPILY in London ,ENGLAND, ever gets to see this he might change his critical opinion on how a great movie 'deliverance' did no favours for how we view the south of the USA and its redneck community. This stereotyped the interbred hill billy picture of the south. What does this , Scarce, tale do in that case. The rape of the 'ugliest' of the friends in Deliverence is nothing in comparison to what this director is telling us could happen should our sat-nav let us down near the everglades etc.

I don't know whether this has put me off Canada or is it Colorado?

Why did the 'slob' have a great need for the food parcels so lovingly put together by our 'not so crack shot' with his perfect Lee Enfield. He had a cellar full of potential meat SOME of them I could have had a good go at eating myself, gently of course and ensuring their survival for my many daily visits. Just in case that should show any discrimination on my part they would have been the ones which had fleshy chests.

Considering the area and the weather conditions it is obvious that the USA is using far too much of the worlds carbon resources as the number of nude yet not cold individuals in this tale shows the UBER waste of heating fuel by POOR peoples. It also showed that American Snow etc or even Canadian snow is not as severe as our one day a year British snow where a few minutes induces frostbite and death from exposure very quickly. I don't think our fully fit and fully equipped SAS could have got as far as the blood angel broken legged tortured individual when given his freedom.

I am just surprised that anyone has thought there were any redeeming qualities to this work other than the British look of the first of our cannibal rednecks teeth.

Now I know why some in the US are against a sort of national health service envisaged by Obama. It's to stop rednecks having access to a decent health care and a need to cull the stupid people ( the victims) from the gene pool.

To watch a movie where cannibalism is not the main theme but hunting a released hostage is the end game for a few cruel middle class respectable young American males look out OPEN SEASON 1974 with (an aged) William Holden and Peter Fonda.

Little gore or blood but a good watch.

Underdone.

Warning: Spoilers
"Scarce" presumably is an ironic title- films like this may be many things but scarce they are not. Three dumb as rocks snowboarders (which surely must be as close to a victimless crime as there is), fall in with some backwoods cannibals with predictable results. Nothing more predictable than the ending.

It's very slow to get anywhere- despite all the "foreshadowing" dialogue routinely clattering to the floor like a bag of hammers. One scene really irked me- the captives are made to dig a hole in the snow, using fairly substantial shovels. The cannibals are standing around not being particularly vigilant, yet they don't think to lamp the one with the gun on the side of the head with a shovel. That was the moment that convinced me that they deserved to die- other than the fact that they were snowboarders, obviously.

GOREaSAURUS24 October 2008
I saw this at the Toronto Festival of Fear (Fan Expo) this year in August 2008. I was super excited to see it because I kept seeing the trailer for it at the Anchor Bay booth. I was not disappointed. Great amount of gore and some really awesome shots. It's a perfect Anchor Bay title and will fit in perfectly with some of the stuff they've already released. I'm excited for this to come out on DVD! I also enjoyed the plot of the movie. The script was pretty good and got the point across. I really enjoyed that. And I REALLY liked the death scenes. The amount of blood and gore was PERFECT. That's my favorite part of a movie. Good job, guys!

Decent little horror flick
rictus724 October 2008
I picked up this movie at random in my video store, based on the cool cover and the interesting plot. What I got was a cool little flick about cannibal woodsman laying siege to a group of people who's car breaks down on a snowboarding weekend. The movie has some good suspense, memorable bad guys (especially the crazy older dude), and a freaky killers mask that ranks up there with the creepier masks in horror. The movie has some great gore, and pretty good acting for a low budget movie. If you are looking for a good Halloween movie night flick that you haven't seen before, check it out, it's a good gore flick that will keep you entertained.

Surprisingly I didn't hate it.
poolandrews24 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Scarce starts as three snowboarding buddies Dustin (Thomas Webb), Owen (editor, writer, producer & director John Geddes) & Trevor (editor, writer, producer & director Jesse T. Cook) from Jersey are driving home from Colorado through Pennsylvania during a fierce snowstorm, they become lost & crash their car during which Trevor is hurt badly. Dustin & Owen walk off in search of help & come across a cabin belonging to a recluse named Ivan (Steve Warren) who offers them assistance, he drives them back to their car in his truck but Trevor has mysteriously vanished. With no way to get back to town Dustin & Owen accept Ivan's offer of a place to sleep for the night but things just don't seem quite right somehow & the boys worst fears are realized when Ivan turns out to be a cannibal & currently on the look out for fresh meat...

This Canadian production was edited, written, produced & directed by John Geddes & Jesse T. Cook who also have large roles in front of the cameras as they star in the thing as well so I guess any praise or criticism is down to them & I have to admit that I quite enjoyed Scarce, I am not a lover of the modern low budget horror at all (just look at some of my comments) but I thought Scarce was a decent effort & much, much better than I was expecting. It's not perfect as it takes a little too long to get started, there's a baffling scene in which one of the lads gets free yet he doesn't take one of the guns on the wall in the cabin with which to blow his captors & torturers away & I don't understand why Ivan & his mate lets the two lads go at the end in order to hunt them down, why don't they just shoot them dead while they are tied up? Why even give them the opportunity to escape? If Ivan has turned cannibal to survive & he likes the taste of human flesh where does the hunting part come in? These are actually minor complaints though as there are more positives than negatives here which is a rarity for a low budget horror film these days, the two central character's of Dustin & Owen are much better than expected as they act like proper people (gasp, shock) as they seemed concerned about their friend & not about playing pranks on each other or where the next beer is coming from, one tries to do the sensible thing & get help & they just seem to ask the right questions, have the right reactions to situations (apart from the gun moment) & just come across as normal. Althouggh there is nothing of great originality here I thought the decision to shun the usual clichéd deformed inbred family of backwoods mutants was refreshing & the villains here are just normal (well, apart from being cannibals) people too. Overall I found myself enjoying Scarce more than I ever thought I would & while the plot is minimal there are some good moments & it's fairly grim & downbeat too.

The snowy isolated location is used quite well & there's certainly a cold desolate atmosphere, the inside of the cabin isn't overdone although there are some nasty surprises in the secret basement. There's some good gore here, as far as I could tell there wasn't any awful CGI computer effects either. There's a bone sticking through someones leg, someones back is sliced off exposing their spine, there's a severed hand & decapitated head, there are all sorts of slabs of human meat & entrails seen, there's a slit throat, some gunshot wounds including a really impressive effect in which someone has a huge hole blasted right through them with a shotgun that is very similar to a scene in Cannibal Apocalypse (1980) as you can even see the guy's face who pulled the trigger through the gaping hole & there are a couple of torture scenes including a toenail being ripped out & a tooth being pulled out. The opening ten or so minutes also feature various naked girls, a sex scene & some lesbianism while the ending also features some more female nudity but in seedier circumstances. The IMDb lists a whopping twenty six executive producers, I guess they all put some money in & that's how Scarce was financed.

With a supposed budget of about $500,000 this really was low budget & the fact it looks so good is a real compliment to the makers, thank god there's none of that horrible shaky hand-held cinematography or that annoying quick as a flash editing where you can't tell whats going on, this looks like a proper film with decent photography where you it's always clear whats happening. Although set entirely in the US this was apparently filmed mainly in Ontario in Canada. The acting is pretty good, the lads are low key & again just seem normal while Ivan the cannibal plays it cool as well with just the right amount of menace without going overboard.

Scarce was a real pleasant surprise, these days I go into low budget horror films I have never heard of before expecting the worst but occasionally a gem will pop up like Scarce, sure it's not the best film ever but you could do a lot worse. Recommended for horror fans for sure.

Good Lower Budget Movie....Some Nieve Reviewers
maximumxxxx21 June 2011
So,a long while back i decided not to write reviews on here, but after reading some of the other reviews, i had to put my thoughts in. First off to those negative reviewers saying the blood and gore was poor or fake, you sound kind of ignorant, if you watch "the making of" in the special features, it was real blood and such that they used from a meat packing plant. Yeah now your complaint just doesn't work.

As for the movie itself, no its not all that original but for a low budget horror flick this was surprisingly well done, I can tell everyone behind this film really put in the effort. The acting was pretty decent and the film keeps you interested. Sure there's some slip ups and its by far not a perfect movie, but no movie is perfect and if perfection is what you are expecting from a horror movie then then you might as well stop watching them, because no movie will EVER be perfect. I am glad i gave this movie a chance and I'm adding it to my giant movie collection of over 400 movies, give this one a shot, the worst that could happen is you don't like it, right?

I'm giving this a 7 on a scale of 1-10 as a lower budget film, not comparing it to big mainstream films, but only compared to other low budget horror.

Fun, gory, awesome B-Horror!
moviemyspace6 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
So I was just visiting family in Toronto Canada and picked up a copy of this movie SCARCE at a Wal-Mart there. My friend from home downloaded it and said he was not a huge fan but I absolutely loved this film. It's got some cheesy parts but it reminds me of the classics I used to watch growing up. It's one of those movies you keep on your shelf for years and years. I was just reading some of the reviews on here comparing it to Hostel? It's not like Hostel at all or Wrong Turn!!! This movie is funny, gory, and genuinely frightening at times and was made for 300k or something. Steve Warren is amazing in it playing Ivan.

I watched the featurette and I can't believe those two guys directed, wrote, and starred in the film and ran through the snow in their bare feet!!! This is the low budget spirit for sure!! I see it comes out here in the US in May.

OKAY the lesbian scene was a little too much!

Better for what was going on behind the scenes
movieman_kev25 November 2009
Beginning with a fully nude bloody guy running for his life from someone, we fast forward to three guys at a party (to help the requisite tit shots along) which they leave the next morning to head back to New Jersey, but thanks to faulty directions they get stuck in the middle of nowhere in PA. Needless to say, the backwoods locals don't take kindly to strangers around these parts.

One can easily tell that both Jesse Cook as well as John Geddes have a definite love for the genre and that enthusiasm bleeds through in this film. That alone allowed me to overlook many of the flaws of the movie which included (but not limited to) a slightly disjointed story, unoriginal plot-line & performances that were pretty shy of stellar. However the gore was pretty well done, and yea the blood does flow at a good pace in this film. Plus just the mere fact that the actors would run around in that bitter cold with not much on shows a lot of dedication.

Eye Candy: Stephanie Banting, Rachel Chartrand, Beth Armstrong, & an extra get topless

My Grade: C+

DVD Extras: Commentary with Writer/director/producers John Geddes & Jesse Cook; second commentary by production and Set designers Cody Calahan & Gavin Peacock; a Making-of documentary that runs an hour & 22 minutes; and a trailer for End of the Line

bad acting, but a great horror movie
canadevil1 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
when the movie first started I almost turned it off because the acting was horrible, but i am glad I left it on because once the story unfolds it is a great ride.

I really appreciate the lengths the actors went to make it realistic like running through the snow in bare feet through a quarter of the movie that really made me cringe because you can almost feel how cold they are.

the effects were top notch as far as the gore goes, which I was quite surprised at because of what a low budget production it was.

I highly recommend it, as long as you can get past the acting

Future psycho redneck classic
brad_mcmillan15 December 2009
I did not know this was a Canadian film until I read some of the comments on this page. This is rather important since you can usually smell a Canadian film from a mile away. This movie was well executed with all great staples of crazy redneck genre. It has rednecks, blood, torture, gore, fear, a chase scene, a creepy cabin, cannibalism and much much more that will keep the genre fanatics satisfied.

The acting was rather imbalanced but pretty good with the villains being rather talented and the victims being kind of amateur but all is fine when most of their lines were replaced with screaming and pleading. The setting was creepy, a remote cabin surrounded by snow and forest.

The film doesn't really bring anything new to the genre but very few of these types of movies do. Settings might differ between forest and desert or the sanity of the rednecks in different films might be varied but all these movies follow the same, but entertaining, formula. The formula works. If you like crazy redneck films or you are just looking for an evening of depravity, watch Scarce.

Just to note, I have noticed that people who give bad reviews for these types of movies on IMDb almost always say ' I am a huge die-hard fan of exploitative horror but....' (or something similar) and then they start analyzing it like you would analyze 'The Red Violin' or 'The Notebook' . Please stop bashing movies just because you wanted to see a drama or a romance. I don't go and review 'Finding Nemo' saying stuff like 'not enough entrails' and 'unrealistic, fish don't talk'.

Blood on the snow
searchanddestroy-16 May 2023
This horror movie is very lousy, badly done but worth. It is not boring despite the common scheme, already seen one million times before. It is simply a slasher taking place in the mountains, with poor acting, terrible dialogues and overall directing. My grand ma would have done better in terms of acting and holding a camera, but curiously it works anyway. I have already seen far far worse than this. I guess it was not even destined to movie theaters but DVD or streaming instead. For horror goers only and very easy to please. You can watch it whilst vacuum cleaning your living room carpet or sitting on the toilet throne.... More fun than horrific though.
