Dubbing almost Kills What was Probably Originally a Good Movie
umrebel7 January 2021
As a huge Fantasy / Sci-Fi fan, I'm not sure how this movie escaped my attention before it dropped on Amazon Prime. Russian film with a cast speaking Russian, but strangely with a couple of very good British actors in leading roles speaking English. The sets, costumes, special effects are surprisingly good and the production value seems pretty high. Although, some of the special effects at times don't make a lot of sense. This would have rated MUCH higher if not for the bad dubbing. I mean COMICALLY BAD voice acting in the dubbing, especially in the initial setup at the start of the movie. If you can make it past the midpoint, it gets a lot better. Objectively, this is a pretty good movie, with a traditional villain storyline that probably isn't going to surprise you much, but still good. But the bad dubbing almost kills it.

Visually interesting, story is a mess
Hughmanity17 November 2021
With a $28M budget this movie does a lot of cool things visually. The sets, costumes and special effects are all fun to see. The issue lies with the plot and characters which are a total mess.

To start it's difficult to even understand protagonists vs antagonists in this movie. Side characters seemingly do random things and reverse course a lot. It's confounded by a lot of the characters looking similar with giant mustaches and pony tails. Then a character shows up that we haven't even seen in the first half of the movie and suddenly she is playing a seminal role?

The plot supposedly centers around the demon Viy but there is confusion around potential multiple demons and how the demon(s) even operate and what their goals are.

The whole movie is really a big mess but it's not without entertainment. It reminds me of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (a bit) in terms of tone and fantasy characters, but if those movies were made by drunk Russians.

Is it lost in translation?
siderite20 January 2019
I've seen several recent fantasy and sci-fi Russian movies and they all feel like the story is a badly assembled jigsaw. Is it that the Russian story makes sense and somehow they can't translate to English? I think that's unlikely. Viy is a strange combination of Dracula and Sleepy Hollow, with a few English actors to make it mainstream, but the rest, including cinematography, is Russian. Jason Flemyng plays the main character, an English scientist having to deal with Slavic superstition in "uncivilized" Russia (yes, it's not Transilvania, which is in Romania, I would have hoped Russians at least knew that), with Charles Dance in a few irrelevant scenes.

The idea was interesting, the special effects nice, but it felt like something was terribly wrong with the assembly of the scenes and the dialogues. You probably have to watch in Russian (if a version even exists).

A Complete Mess
claudio_carvalho11 October 2015
"Viy", a.k.a. "Forbidden Empire" is a fantasy film with a confused story about a British cartographer that flees from England (actually from his future father-in-law) expecting to raise a fortune in the East to marry his beloved girlfriend but finding a cursed place. The film has wonderful special effects but is hard to be followed since the pretentious screenplay is not well-written and is totally disconnected with many plot points.

The 1967 film is a Russian classic horror movie and a little gem. However this unnecessary remake is a complete mess and difficult to understand which the target audience is. My vote is three.

Don't expect a remake of 1967 movie and you won't be disappointed
JaneYak19 April 2014
I liked the movie. When I was going to see it I had already known that it was not a screen version of Nikolai Gogol's story but "a movie based on it". That's why I was not disappointed as some people who went to the theatre to see just a new version of 1967 "Viy". Because it is not.

This new "Viy" took the same legend from the book (based on a Slavic folklore legend), the same characters, the same location - a small Ukrainian out-of-the-way village, added some new characters , CGI (quite good), shuffled everything, sprinkled it with humour (sometimes dark)and eminently suitable music. And as a result, we have an interesting mystic story definitely worth watching.

Really poor
EdgarST2 May 2019
Poor Nikolai Gogol... The British empire came to "put order" in the East, eradicating the Ukrainian folk from his masterful long tale "Vij". This is an overlong, convoluted, revisionist version of Gogol's story, reducing the fantasy elements to dumb babble passing for "scientific" explanations of the beliefs and fears of an agrarian, superstitious community in Transylvania during the 18th century. Better watch the 1967 "Vij" or Mario Bava's masterful, free adaptation "La maschera del demonio" (1960).

A quite entertaining fantasy/supernatural/crime movie.
p-jonsson19 September 2015
This movie is probably quite unknown by most people. I certainly had never heard of it when I stumbled on it. It is a quite entertaining little fantasy / supernatural / crime movie though. I am actually not sure what to classify at as. It starts of as a fantasy movie but is it really? The cinematics of this movie is very good. For me it was the main part contributing to the enjoyment. The small world of these villagers is cinematically beautiful, dirty and gritty at the same time. The characters themselves with their enormous moustaches and weirdly cut hair are great. The special effects will perhaps not win any awards but they were good nonetheless. I especially liked the transformation scene during the meal somewhere in the middle of the movie.

The story is a bit of a roller coaster ride and sometimes it felt a bit disjointed. It was not really obvious why one scene or event was followed by another at all times. But then, taking into account the later events in the movie it was perhaps meant to be a bit disjointed and "dreamy" and I have to confess that I was extremely tired when watching this movie.

The ending was a bit of a surprise. This is where the movie kind of went from a fantasy movie to more of a crime story. I have to say that I did not really see that coming until it was about to fall in my lap.

There are definitely worse ways of spending two hours in the evening, especially if you like movies that are not the typical mainstream Hollywood fare.

Into the messy woods
Prismark105 June 2016
In Viy also known as The Forbidden Kingdom, Jason Flemyng is Jonathan Green an ambitious cartographer forced to flee his prospective father in law in England and goes to create detailed maps of Transylvania and he stumbles upon a forgotten Ukranian kingdom with a roving beast.

It is filled with villagers who fear witchcraft, monsters and legends with a cursed monastery high on the mountain that holds the body of Pannochka and is the source of all evil as she is some kind of spirit that controls the gateway to hell.

Green as a rational man and a scientist does not believe in monsters and myths but the things he sees might just get him to believe in the irrational especially as Pannochka's father wants to give her a proper burial.

The film is filled with wondrous special effects that would make Terry Gilliam or Tim Burton envious but the story is too muddled and the film veers from a twisted bizarre fairy tale to something more scary and bloodthirsty. The dubbing is very poor as well which is off putting but Flemyng provides goofiness and comic relief. The scenes with Charles Dance back in London have little reason to be in the final film.

Surreal and pragmatic but difficult to fully appreciate....
s327616915 September 2015
Forbidden Kingdom is surreal and pragmatic at the same time. Its a disorienting mix that mostly works, even though it probably should not.

There's a lot of fantastical, hellish fantasy elements in this film, that have a rather medieval feel to them. Horned demons, winged sprites and variety of other bizarre creations. This sits alongside a rather pragmatic tale of rationalism with an inexplicable, religious twist.

The acting seems reasonable but I feel a lot has been lost in translation. Its pretty clear the Russian component of this film has been dubbed. As a result I suspect is a lot of the meaning conveyed in Russian that would help to fully explain the story has been lost. As a result, for English speakers like myself, this film may have a disjointed feel to it. There is no clear segue between the scenes that make up the story and as a consequence no sense of cohesion and unity in the overall story itself.

Its worth briefly mentioning the cinematography used in this film. Its truly exceptional and really gives this film great visual depth and beauty.

All in all, for a non Russian audience this film may be a little too difficult to grasp and fully appreciate. As I said, the English translation does this film no favours. As a result its hard for me to offer an unequivocal thumbs up. That said, this is still a highly original and very creative film, reminiscent of works by Tim Burton. As such, I would suggest its still worth your time. Seven out of ten from me.

Remake
kosmasp4 October 2015
Just in case you didn't know (like me), this is sort of a remake of a 1967 movie. Though as some have stated here and on other places, it's not really a remake or people shouldn't expect it to be one. Whatever the case, this has pretty good special effects in it. The acting on the other hand is hard to rate.

Why is that? While watching (in English in this case), you might realize that something is off with some of the actors. I can only assume, but most of them either couldn't speak English or their English was so bad, they had to be synced. And that is very apparent in many scenes. Obviously Jason Flemyng does not have that issue. And if you are a fan of Fantasy Fiction, you will still sort of love this. But there are things that just don't work or are too convoluted ...

Blackmagic vs. Science.
topblock23 March 2015
If you're a Gogol follower - skip it. The original story ends as the movie proceeds. Yet you would definitely like to step into the new fantasy world, glamorously picturized by the talented scenarist+director. Russia/Ukraine has an awful lot to offer - the whole abyss of an amazing mythology, with stunningly scary monsters rooted in a fascinating history. While the native language speaker will certainly find the movie rather colorful and surprising, the "foreigner" will be stunned by the visualizations and enjoy the unexpected appearance of a Englishman scientist whose stepping in turns this originally "horror" scenario into a detective, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" style. Strongly recommended to those who liked "Hellboy", "Sleepy Hollow" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles"...

Great fun
bkbirge20 December 2015
Thoroughly enjoyable bit of weirdness. The movie looks great and there is some great comedic timing from a lot of the characters here too. The juxtaposition of peasant superstition and aristocratic "there's an explanation for everything" is a great mix. For most of the movie, what is supposed to be real or an illusion from the story's point of view is in question. This reminds me of parts of Pan's Labyrinth, Naked Lunch, Van Helsing, among others. It does have some flaws in the logic and the pacing at times, and it can be a little confusing separating the characters from their grime to make sense of the story. This is one of those movies that's got a lot of art house in it so it's not going to appeal to everyone, but if you like a unique mix of camp, fx, and writing that leaves some questions unanswered you'll enjoy it. I highly recommend this one. I would go see a sequel in a heartbeat.

A few decent scenes, but overall rather predictable
Leofwine_draca13 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
FORBIDDEN KINGDOM is another big-bucks Russian fantasy flick that descends into lengthy and repetitive action scenes featuring plenty of CGI augmentation but not a lot in the way of voice or character. The film feels more like a Hollywood flick along the lines of VAN HELSING or I, FRANKENSTEIN than anything more distinctive. It's supposedly an adaptation of a famous Gogol story but is about as far from that as you can get. The underrated Jason Flemyng plays a traveller who heads off to a Romanian forest to find himself battling a malignant demon. There's one decent set-piece involving a headless creature attacking our hero but otherwise it's all rather predictable and gets tiresome about twenty minutes in. Charles Dance has a small role and is always welcome, but there are one too many over-the-top Russian characters in support.

Great shots and scenes ruined by story hard to follow
luisgus-722689 May 2022
This is a strange one.

Many of the scenes, angles and effects are great I must say and add to the mystical atmosphere the movie is setting up.

Where does this go wrong?

For me the voice over or translation takes a big hit from whichever seriousness anything is said.

There is a mix of mythical creatures with realism but for someone that goes into this without context, makes understandind the context very difficult to the point of asking yourself mid movie "what am I watching?"

Viy was much better
willandcharlenebrown13 July 2022
This movie didn't have the charm or same enchantment as Viy (1969 Russian Film). The movie was too bright and colorful as was the music. The acting was ok but the dubber voices were irritating. You might want to take a pass on this one.

Story 1/10 - Acting 1/10 - Camera 9/10 - 3D 8/10 - Dubbing 0/10 Worst russian/english dubbing I have seen since the german version of Vulcano in 1998. The filming is so many sequences of 2-3 seconds that your eyes hurt. The acting and costumes are so bad, but the camera lens and filter is so good, same as the 3D effects. Wierdest thing I have watched so far.

kevinmeylemans27 October 2019
This movie gets better after more reviewing! 7 cuz of the not so optimal dubbing. For the rest it scores pretty high.. Great CGI and special fx. Script is decent. Acting very nice.. Really liked the whole project, sucha shame of the dubbing which didn't honour the work imho. They should have done it original Russian language with English subs.

meaningless but eye-catching
spintongues21 March 2014
The other day, I decided to be with my people (in their collective hell), and watch this je ne sais quoi. What to say here. They can't write, for they're basically illiterate, and they can't act, for the mugs of the "Moscow theaters actors" (tm) are too well-fed. Everyone speaks in those pumped-up husky voices that are expected to mean passion from females, and courage with the other kind. For me, personally, though, they signify only people sitting on their potties trying very hard to give birth to something immortal, needles first.

The cinematographers seem to have learned shooting eye-pleasing pics, though they say it's not very hard to do, these days. They have also learned how to steal nice-looking stills for our desktops from others. Although, it seems that all visuals were created not by Russians but by Czechs, Germans and whom not, so maybe I should take this last statement back. You know, it's all like giving bright neon building blocks to an idiot child—he would definitely build something with them, and it would certainly catch the eye yet it would be utterly meaningless. For there is absolutely no logic in the plot, and the montage of those nice-looking pictures, there's no even the Hollywood logic in it. The sense is totally absent from this product, like lip-sync (for all actors were dubbed like in a bad TV production).

All PR effort (and the Wiki article) only confirm that the movie was targeted at brainless idiots who salivate from Photoshopped landscapes, and fast-changing camera angles. Also, xenophobia detected: the film creators seem to convey a very simple idea that all the worst in humans comes from within, and as the most humans in the film are, obviously, the Ukrainians, they look like the evil incarnate. On the other hand, Nicholas Gogol apparently thought so, too, although he didn't like all people, not only the Jews.

A slight anti-clerical pathos makes a welcome respite from all this stupidity but the creators apparently didn't dwell on this. Judging from what and how they speak in the promo documentary, they have no dwelling place in their brains. Their aim was "to catch up and overrun," like Khrushchev used to say, and "to produce the movie with the highest, globally accepted standards of intiteiment" (I kid you not, this is the word they use on a dumb card in the promo film; and I just love this provincially soviet demagoguery).

But the theme of rebooting classics is rich, no arguing about it. They now are free to re-shoot The Petty Demon, for example, creating the small dusty monster there with the multifaceted LED eyes, like what they did here. It will give much pleasure to the young and broad audience, no doubt.

Extraordinary effects, poor dubbing
banem210 January 2017
Unlike some comments, I think the effects in this movie are extraordinary, especially the church and dinner scenes, and I cannot remember when I saw such in any movie recently. And it keeps going throughout the whole movie (including complete scenery in whole movie!). The kid in you will watch it mouth open!

Unfortunately, for some reason, someone has decided to dub the movie into English since it is originally in Russian and this was done quite poor. I was watching it on the movie channel and I was not sure what is wrong with the tone until I found out this is Russian movie which was dubbed (I am against dubbing)... And I am looking to watch the original version.

If you like this type of movies (fantasy), you will have 2 quality hours of full enjoyment!

Loads of fun
christineballone19 November 2021
I hate to present an opinion about a movie I watched simply I have a lot of respect for all the time and labour that goes into making one! That being said: this film I find is a lot of fun to watch for anyone who loves sci-fi and fantasy and has remained a child inside even in adult hood! Being originally German I grew up with fairytales and have preserved the wonder in me that I felt as a child emerging myself into a wondrous world of magic and monsters and mysterious landscapes! I don't waste a lot of time looking at details like accuracy or facts, those are reserved for movies who need them. This film is meticulously crafted, sometimes violent but fantasy violence and the setting is marvellous! The acting is good and fun to watch, the film keeps you interested, I stopped watching wheel of time after 20 minutes because I found it boring ( I'll give it another try if there is nothing else)You need action for this sort of movie not a lot of interactive talking! For me this film is well worth it watching and maybe it will be for you too!

Bad film
aleksey-voskresenskiy31 January 2014
I did not like this film. The plot is week. 3D effects are fine, but they can not improve the overall impression. The plot of original Russian film "Viy" (1967) was is fully distorted. The original film was really scarring. The new film has nothing common with Gogol's great book. It should have another title, not "Viy". Ukrainian men are shown as stupid and permanently drunk people. Ukrainian women are also shown as silly witches. But the hero of the film is an English scientist. The general idea is that Ukainian (and Russian) people can do nothing without help of Europe. The is no truth in the film. Even more, it is harmful and anti-patriotic. Do not recommend it.

On its own terms not bad (should have been a lot better)
orvuus4 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have been eagerly anticipating seeing this film for a long time, ever since seeing previews. The first film made from Gogol's story, also titled Viy (1967), was humorous and yet had scary special effects, especially well done for the time (the Russians made some great films in this period). This is a different take on the story, NOT a remake of that 1967 film, which I can appreciate. As one reviewer noted, this is very like Burton's take on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (possible spoiler?) in that the plot veers away from the original story. In fact this makes the film very interesting, and I think Jason Fleming does a good job in his role as the cartographer who blunders into a drama in a cossack village. The letdown comes in the overuse of CGI, to me, and in the decidedly humdrum actresses used for the female parts. Not being Ukranian, naturally, I don't share other reviewers anger at the portrayal of drunken cossacks, and in fact this is hypocritical in that the 1967 shows about the same thing. (The Don Cossacks historically were an important people in Russian history, and made up elite cavalry units). Comparing this movie to similar American ventures in period horror overusing CGI, I think this is actually better than, say, Brothers Grimm. Nonetheless overall weak actors (the witch should be at least as fascinating as the 1967 version, and there are plenty of beautiful Ukranian or Russian women that could have played this role), overuse of CGI, and an overly busy plot make this a less than stellar picture that is forgettable. Please note the film is available in a somewhat English-friendly DVD, but the subtitles are horrible -- making the plot even more incomprehensible. Some of the subtitles make no sense at all, and some apparently cannot translate Russian words and just put them on the screen in kind of direct transliteration. I think this subtitling was done with computer assistance, badly, because even the HTML for a title card is translated (a font number!).

VILLAGE OF HELL'S EVIL
nogodnomasters13 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is an odd Russian fantasy film with mediocre translations and lack of a decent soundtrack. Jonathan Green (Jason Flemyng) is an inventor and master cartographer. Caught in a compromising position, he leaves London and maps Europe with his wanderings taking him to a small superstitious village haunted by a 7 horned Viy creature and who knows what else. Here he learns their secrets and is drawn into their issues.

The production might be a horror fantasy for tweens. The cinematography was decent and the plot interesting as the film makers did everything they could to make it dull. The dialogue lacked zip. It needed to drop clues. The soundtrack needed to be some of that black Russian folk death metal or whatever they classify it. What was with the bad Mohawk comb overs? Did they really wear their hair that way? I did like the CG special effects.

Guide: No f-bombs. Implied sex. Distant nudity?
