A Work of Art
colemarta22 April 2020
This episode shall find its way to classrooms and museums. It breaks the heart wide open and hugs the tears out of what is left. I am grateful to the artists for making it and sharing it with us.

The audio was recorded when Duncan was in his earlier years of podcasting, and is the actual interview he did with his dying mother. Ward and the animation team hit it out of the park with their choices of imagery and tone, throughout.

It is fittingly the longest and final episode of the first season, and though I look forward to the next season, if all they were able to put out was this one episode, it would be an accomplishment the creators should be proud of.

The only cartoon that ever made me cry
codylubinsky28 April 2020
I started watching this show at the recommendation of a friend who said it was super trippy, funny, & thought-provoking after he watched the first few episodes. I thought it was weird at first, but I quickly realized how brilliant of an idea it is to juxtapose such heavy topics with surreal & whimsical animation. By the time I got to the final episode, I actually had to choke back tears & could not look away. The most beautiful & touching 30-minutes in TV history, in my opinion.

I have cried the all entire episode
kobiovadia1 May 2020
And im almost never crying, nor from reality, and not from movies. But this episode... im still recovering. The best animated episode of all time, easily. You will show this episode to your children, and they'll show it to their children

From Bojack Horseman to Midnight Gospel

After I watched the "View from halfway down" episode of bojack. Then I watched this, midnight gospel. And this is the best decision that I ever made.

Mind Blowing
virtualjupiter27 April 2020
I was at the very height of a trip when I saw this episode. I was BLOWN AWAY. This is by far one of the best works of art I have seen in a long time and I felt it on every level. What a deeply touching way to honor his mother, who was clearly an amazing woman, and I'm so grateful to have been permitted to view/listen to it. Like, holy wow, man, so beautiful and true! It broke my heart open, and kind of melted me into a thousand little pieces. It overachieved, and was spectacular. I honestly would love a second season, but how do you follow up after something so all encompassing as episode 8?!

Simply Beautiful
jalonprice-9147228 April 2020
I didn't really go into this show thinking it would effect me in anyway. I was honestly just bored, but this episode helped come to terms with a lot of feelings I was having about my friends death recently... And I feel that I'm finally at peace with it now.

The incomprehensible yet simple nature of loss
tenki_9 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
How does a person deal with loss? According to Deneen Fendig, death is not much about death itself, it's about how you feel when it comes to accepting it.

In the last episode of The Midnight Gospel, series creator Duncan Trussell (disguised as the show's main character Clancy Gilroy) has a really touching conversation with his mother Deneen, regarding the concept of death, mortality, life, birth and peeing on doctors.

This episode's main storyline is taken directly from the Real Duncan Trussell Family Hour, a podcast hosted by Duncan himself, where he invites many people into sharing their thoughts on various themes, such as drugs, love and, you guessed it, death.

Essentially, we are treated to a mother that is sadly in her last days of life, trying to explain to her son what her death really means to her, and what her son should do once the time comes.

This episode is heartbreaking in many ways, and the beautiful visual metaphors really elevate the story we are being told.

It is truly a work of art, and so far the best piece of media I've seen all year, you should definitely watch the entire thing.

"The most real experience since BoJack Horseman."

A balm for the weary soul
jimvarghese-4626121 April 2020
If you are a regular DTFH listener then it would be a cardinal sin to miss this show. This is why we Trussel so hard. The finale (Mouse of Silver) is actually the very best episode. I cried.

Duncan's podcast had saved my life in 2019 in Vancouver. And now The Midnight Gospel is helping me to find my centre in this pandemic part of the universe. .

There have been several beautiful episodes already (the prison one, the slaughterhouse one) but this one takes the cake.

I didn't really see it coming... this whole series is great, but this episode. This episode. I haven't cried like that in years. In the best way possible. I needed this and so do you. Just unbelievable.

This is one of the most amazing things I've watched in my 67 years of movie and TV watching. I don't think this can continue to another season, whatever they could write can't compete, but I'd like to them try.

I cried
Fixxel6 May 2020
This was such a beautiful, deep, meaningful episode, it hit me hard...

I've rewatched it at least 2-3 times, which is something I never do with any of the shows I've watched. Once I've watched a show thats that for at least a year. Each time I've cried but each time less so.

But those feel like necessary, healthy tears, you know? and I think honestly this show is something most of us should watch.

BE CAREFUL with this one...

Warning: Spoilers
What a ride this episode was. Thank you Duncan for sharing this. If you don't know, this episode contains real audio from Duncan's real mom who died not long after it was recorded. This one cut deep, death was portrayed in this most beautiful way possible. I don't cry at real funerals and this cartoon finally did it for me. My mom is still alive and healthy and I couldn't hold back the tears. I kinda loved how right when it got serious he would switch to a ridiculous scene because I was genuinely sad and needed the break. If you invest in this episode you'll be in for a beautiful painful treat. But one that is inventible and I couldn't pick a better captain for the journey

Human
asmello-br16 May 2020
It's impossible to watch this as a conscious, empathic, human being and not feel strong feelings. And that's because, as much as this is an animated show, it's also a recording of a very true story, with very real people. You can tell from the way they speak, from what they say to each other and what you know they must be feeling that this is something that runs deep and defines how they experience the world.

And in the middle of that chaos, that storm that can wreck anyone if they are not prepared, they have found a balance, they have found their peace. And yes, there's sadness underneath it all, there's finality and everyone involved wants to cry, but there's also acceptance, and that's the most powerful thing. It's a truly appropriate way to end the season, because all of the little nuggets of insight we see throughout the previous episodes build up the foundation for the serenity required to process the loss of a dear person, like we see here.

Thank you, everyone involved. This one gets a special place in my heart.

100% The best episode of season. Very creative visually, loved the chat(interview) the most with mother and son. Second episode in row talking about death and how to deal with it. Everything was delicious and I ate it. Still, I'm not sure about that ending did I like it or not but the episode was masterpiece.

Just Wow
bigjfb755 May 2020
I sometimes get choked up watching a show or tear up listening to a song. But I've NEVER been hit with a half hour of media harder than I have with this episode. I was sobbing by halfway through and by the end, the top of my shirt was soaked. I've now watched the episode 3 times now with the same result. The way the animation elevates this already extremely emotional real conversation between family is beautiful.

This is the most tear jerking emotional cartoon I have ever seen and I will be making everyone I know at the very least watches this episode if not the whole series. I will be revisiting it over and over again when I need a good cry. Here's to hoping for more deep talks in dying worlds. #Season2

beyond beautiful and touching
coloripple12 May 2020
I saw the rating and had eard about an iterview with his dying mom, so I was expecting te feels, but I did not expect this to be so gutpunchingly emotional.

Starting lighthearted, with imaculate, obviously unwritten banter between mother and son, transforming more real and touching every minute. With the most intergalactically beautiful visuals, that pull back on some of the crazy action in order to really pack the emotional punch, this episode is a perfect ode to the most important woman in Clancy's, or rather Duncans life. Perfect. 10/10.

A Warm Hug for Those Who've Have or are still Suffering
geoffkholdsworth3 August 2020
Don't let the title mislead you. This episode is a gut punch in the most beautiful way possible. The creativity behind this shows concept is brilliant and definitely worth sitting down and spending some time taking it in.

I was blown away by this season finale. I couldn't stop hearing good things about it online and my curiosity just wanted to see what everyone meant, tonight I binged from episode 4 after coming back to it after a short break. All of the topics of discussion are incredibly fascinating to dive into and gain insight through professionals.

This episode featuring Duncans late mother Deneen who recorded this with Duncan when he was in the earlier stage of his podcast.

Birth, Life, and Death are heavily discussed throughout this episode. Its a lot for anyone to take in, but on the same token: Necessary and Beautiful. I found myself rewinding thought provoking statements, holding back tears, not succeeding in doing so, and just enamored by the relationship between these two, it was so heartwarming. I highly appreciate Pendleton Ward and Duncan Trussel for bringing this vision to life. The animation staff will make you scratch your head in intrigue, the topics will captivate you and/or inspire you, the humor will make you laugh and lastly the shows "heart" will make you, as the episode states "Crack open yours"

Most beautiful stuff I watched since A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
CubaMtvn21 May 2020
I've been an user of this amazing page for over a decade and this is my first review ever. The feelings watching this peaked almost from the start but the ending destroyed me, and in a good way!

Have you watched Demolition? I had a feeling that I need to dismantle my life and reorganize it again (like in that movie) after watching this.

Just beautiful. Looking forward to what this show can offer to us

The Most Emotional I Get in "Internet"
Oktay_Tuna2 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am writing this review after my 5th viewing of the episode. I come back to this every few months and every time it hit me, way harder than any film/episode/podcast/book etc. I wasn't aware of Duncan Trussell and his podcasts before watching this show and while I loved the podcast version of Duncan and his mom's talk, I have to remark that this episode improves it in every right way. Things going on during the animation are very well-drawn and I loved the symbolism throughout especially the choice of Clancy giving birth to his mom later on. The content and the spiritual importance of podcast on its own deserves 10/10 but with animation and music being so well-integrated, it became one of my favorite episodes if not my favorite of all time. I even liked how there were bits of "police chase" throughout the episode, it let me take a quick break to wipe my tears. As a side note, while rewatching this episode I stop 5 minutes before the original ending(even though I know that 5 minutes is necessary to convince Netflix or the producers that a 2nd season has a premise, I still think ass slapping etc. Are too much after all that crying)
