It's not the first year of the city of Annapolis, which was settled in 1649 and incorporated in 1708. It's not even the first year of the United States Naval Academy, which was founded in 1845. It's the first year of a class of plebes at the Academy, and it not only offers some insight into why things are done the way they are, no matter how sadistic they seem -- or maybe it's an excuse -- but gives some insight into what the students learn in that first year: not just facts and numbers, but attitudes.

Bruce Seth Green, who directed this, hasn't had a big career, but he has had a long one, mostly in television.
