A Magical Episode
JoeDub8724 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well damn.

Save for the 'Hype Man' episode, this was one of the best - and heaviest - of the season. The bookends were completely perfect, with the end leaving some things unclear and questions unanswered that I'm sure will be addressed in the season finale.

The build-up of situations/events that lead to a boiling over of Dave's relationship and the eventual conflict/argument between he & Ally while serious, intense, concluding with Dave looking like the 'bad guy' was something that was a necessary evil of sorts that I feel as - made evident by Dave's realization during Ally's speech and his overall mood, body language, and mindset conveyed as he's driving at the end - no matter the fallout, this more than likely will be the catalyst which leads to an important and positive change in his character's behavior and as a person period.

To that end, I feel the need to air my sense of bafflement with various users critiquing and subsequently rating the show/episodes poorly based on how 'unlikeable' our title character, Dave, is in their opinion. And to that, and especially the few qualms I'm specifically referring to that have been voiced, I simply feel the need to cite the show's description on its main page - it literally spells out who Dave is as his character's portrayed. If you're going to give this particular episode the lowest possible score based on your opinion of this character and who he is as a person, I can't help but ask: what exactly have you been watching this season leading up to this?! Because it surely hasn't been this same show, as any otherwise perceptive viewer would already understand what's at play and why. Curious, if not mildly frustrating.

Another review mentioned and gave the episode a poor review based what seemed like solely on the entire running over the rabbit element while Dave & Ally are driving to the wedding. Which is obviously absurd-buuuut some people fail to see the big picture, as this person clearly did. Naturally I'm against any form of animal abuse depicted for entertainment purposes however context, especially in this case, is everything. First, the entire running it over was an accident. But second, does ANYONE truly believe this was just thrown in there arbitrarily & merely for the hell of it?! No-of course not. Given Ally's speech about the magic trick that she yearned finding out the truth behind when she was younger, this frames and sheds light on the earlier accident in an entirely new way, allowing us to look at it through a whole new lens. I said earlier, that questions went unanswered-like what eventually happened with their relationship?! The thing is, I think we can infer... by both Dave driving solo, AND the rabbit.

In Ally's speech, she creates the analogy of the rabbit from the magic trick and what happened and how that's ultimately representative of that which is special yet unexplainable when it comes to the magic within a relationship... The rabbit represented the magic. And Dave killed the rabbit. As such, Dave 'killed' the magic as in the magic of their relationship. Which is a dark way to look at it all, but I can't really think of any other narrative purpose for the accident than it have - if not this exact one - at least SOME sort of deeper meaning.

I suppose next week we'll see for certain, and I for one can't wait to see how everything is wrapped up and resolved, if at all.

DAVE

Warning: Spoilers
I thought this episode was awesome. complaining about a bunny scene is a little ridiculous especially when I think it was used to foreshadow what happens at the end. Ally has been suffering and Dave delivers the final blow to end the relationship. I hope there is a season 2!

Here is why the bunny scene was important
zkissick-593-57537925 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Dave had to really work at killing the bunny. He didn't want to kill it. He just wanted to drive away and act like everything was fine. The bunny was damaged beyond repair and Ally knew what had to be done. That was their relationship.

One of the best episodes thus far

Warning: Spoilers
The bunny scene was a little over the top for sure, but I'm tired of seeing incredibly low reviews because of it. I found it to be a little painful to watch at parts, but it accomplishes what it shoots for in terms of dark humor. I think the worst part of it is its effect on Ally, but even that is explained in a thoughtful way at the end. Also, Dicky is not afraid to portray even his shameful and regrettable priorities and actions, and that is why this episode stands apart. For a show based on a comedy rapper, the characters feel very real, flawed and relatable. Well done Dave. Can't wait for next episode!

Unforgettable Emotions
sanadalsalt17 July 2023
One of the most powerful aspects of this episode is the heartbreak that is depicted. The separation between Dave and Ally had me on the edge of my seat, with tears streaming down my face. The writers and actors did an incredible job of portraying the pain and sadness that comes with a breakup. My heart was pounding, and my nerves were on edge throughout the entire episode.

The emotional depth of "Ally's Toast" is truly remarkable. The way the characters deal with their feelings and the raw vulnerability they display is incredibly relatable. It's rare to find a TV show that can evoke such strong emotions from its viewers, and "Dave" has managed to do just that.

Furthermore, the performances in this episode were outstanding. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, and they bring their characters to life in a way that is both believable and captivating. Each line of dialogue is delivered with such passion and conviction that it's impossible not to be completely engrossed in the story.

The writing in this episode is also worth praising. The dialogue is witty, sharp, and filled with heartfelt moments. The writers have created a script that is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking. They tackle complex themes such as love, loss, and the challenges of maintaining a relationship in the face of adversity.

Overall, "Ally's Toast" is a standout episode of "Dave" that deserves all the praise it can get. It is a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave you breathless and wanting more. The performances, writing, and storyline all come together to create a truly unforgettable viewing experience.

I highly recommend this episode to anyone who enjoys compelling storytelling and well-developed characters. It is a testament to the talent and creativity of the cast and crew of "Dave."

Running over a rabbit
paulaacajiao24 April 2020
I like this show- I believe the timing of the comedy flows well but why am I watching Dave run over a rabbit at the beginning of the episode- unnecessary scene, as well as please think I'm funny humor-crunch worthy - come on we can do better than that. I wish there was a negative 1 rating.

Getting worse with each episode
jason_1327 April 2020
After two "woke" episodes here we have Dave running over a bunny. Really tells you a lot about the state of TV comedy when shows like this are hyped.

This episode was disturbing and I couldn't finish it after that bunny scene. I can't believe anyone would think that is funny it made me sick. I was really liking this show but I will not be watching anymore.

If you are an animal lover, I would highly recommend not watching this.

THANK GOD

Warning: Spoilers
I was praying the the whole episode that Ally would dump Dave's diarrhea-riddled ass. Her speech is great, yes. The end is cinematic, yes. But if this show tries one more time to get me to empathize with this unbearable, garbage character I'm out.

Now that I've got that out of the way...

This show's greatest fault is implying that character arcs occur episode to episode without any of the succeeding episodes portraying any of the effects of said "character arcs." Dave says he'll change, but then the events of that episode are never referenced again. The only callbacks are to safe gags or the vague semblance of over-arching storylines.

It feels like the show is caught between wanting to be serial or more episode-to-episode, but its greatest fault is that it can't make that choice. Half the time it feels like it's going for one but flakes to the other when there could be an interesting story.

This episode would have been a seven, docking one star each for the diarrhea scene and how drawn out the bunny scene was.

Running over the rabbit was absolutely uncalled for and unecessary. The show was brilliant until now.
