Emerson gets lucky
Tweekums28 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
If you every wondered why there was Chinese writing on the window of Emerson Cod's office you will find out in this episode; he lives above a Chinese restaurant. As he tucks into his favourite Dim Sum he finds a note requesting help in the fortune cookie. He goes downstairs and learns that the chef has died in what the police believe was an accident but the family disagree. Ned questions the dead man and learns that he has been involved in gambling at the restaurant and had gambled his daughter's hand in marriage! As they investigate there is another 'accident' which kills a waiter who turns out to be an insurance investigator looking into the chef's death which was a day after he look out a massive life insurance policy. When it is established how the gambling is happening Olive and Chuck get jobs there while Ned and Emerson infiltrate the game by pretending to be a couple of high-rollers. Away from the case a man comes to The Pie Hole claiming to be an old friend of Ned's father hoping to get back in touch; Ned doesn't want to get involved but Chuck and Olive go to his last known address and discover that Ned has a couple of half-brothers; and they are twins!

This was my favourite episode of the second season so far; it was great to see Christine Adams return as domineering dog breeder and former polygamist Simone Hundin; her affect on Emerson was hilarious. The case wasn't as surreal as most of the cases they investigate but was still entertaining; I especially liked the poker game where food took the place of cards and Chuck and Olive looked great in their red Chinese waitress uniforms. The secondary story involving Ned's family only took up a small part of the episode but hints of interesting things to come.

There's lots of dim sum...and Emerson gets some.As

Warning: Spoilers
As far as episodes go, I'll forever remember this one as the one where Emerson 'got some'. Do you remember the pretty but rather scary black lady who seemed to like Emerson in the polygamy episode (1.06 'Bitches')? Well, in this one she's back and Emerson hits it off VERY well with her! On the other hand, Emerson is dismayed that the chef at his beloved dim sum restaurant was murdered--and he wants to figure out who did it. Seeing the dead guy impaled the way he was turned out to be quite a treat--you just have to see it as well as his reaction when he awakens. The majority of the episode is set in this Chinese restaurant and it turns out to be a gambling den--a very strange gambling den.

Overall, while this episode is, as usual, quite strange, I also thought it not nearly among the funnier shows from this wonderful series. I am NOT saying it's bad...just not nearly as funny. Worth seeing, of course...just not all that funny. Oh, and did I say Emerson got some?!

Guy Ritchie tribute?
kenmal-131 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The new series (2008) started slowly as far as I was concerned. I found it difficult to get back in the swim (or should that be swing?) of things.

BUT ANYWAY - I stuck with it and after viewing a few episodes (and possibly missing one) it started to come good again. I found the ones where lots of secrets were being revealed and Olive ended up in a Nunnery (shouldn't that be Convent?) to be quite confusing and hard to follow. The Bzzzz bee opening episode was quite good and the Frescorts episode last week was good. However, today's episode was just fantastic!! SPOILER POTENTIAL - There were a lot of quick/short-edited shots during character description scenes, which reminded me so much of a Guy Ritchie movie (eg Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) that it has made me determined to see if he guest wrote, or took part in, this episode somehow. And then there was the lady with the English accent who I thought was bound to be a 'baddy' (aren't they always?) - but NO not this time. I sat back and laughed so much - at the thought of food items representing poker hands! And what's more, surprise, surprise - Emerson getting a snog in a love scene with aforementioned English lady - WOW - didn't he look genuinely pleased with himself.

Fantastic episode!
