Missing the point
timothyalis3 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
People are upset at the anticlimactic death of Omar, but they are completely missing the point. Throughout the show, important characters such as Bodie have been killed in anticlimactic ways, and Omar is not different. His death shouldn't be stylized or fancy, death should never be pretty. It's sudden, it's shocking, and when you play the game like Omar, it can happen anytime. People who are mad missed the point of the episode and a major theme in the show, which is death is not pretty, and people who are in the streets rarely go peacefully.

I was shocked at first but then it all made sense

Warning: Spoilers
I completely disagree with people who say Omar's death should have been so much more climactic. This show is so subtle in its details and story telling technique that is both literate and realistic. I think Omar's death was foreshadowed continuously through out the show kids shouting his name on the streets out of fear in a playful way. The kid who shot Omar, I could empathize with his curiosity, since we were keeping up with him on the background as well. But most importantly, when Bunk talked with Omar about how kids imitate him in plays on the streets, imitating savageness and unconcern, that was one of the sorrows resided in him. It feels to me like he was killed by a shadow, and probably his own, because nobody could have got him on Baltimore streets, he was unbeaten.

Everyone goes down in Baltimore, eventually
cuddlesatusc19 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Like many have already said, Omar's death is a point made throughout The Wire. In the end, Omar isn't really a hero and just another body in the morgue. All part of The Game. This is easily the best of the season so far.

Omar
gdedge18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I swear to god that when I wrote this I'm keeping in mind that this show does not give you happy endings and that Omar was no hero, and it was predictable that he died sooner or earlier he was in the Game and he was rash in these last episodes. I'm not mad at Omar's death, I'm not mad at the fact that he couldn't take down Marlo as he wanted, it makes sense he would lose seeing how he was. I am mad at the fact that it's the most loved character in the entire TV Show, the most original, the most savage, the most daring, the most feared, and his death was like those deaths we saw in the 3rd season where some random drug dealer got killed by practically no reason by some other random dealer and that's it, end of the scene, writers move on and we act like it didn't happen, who is the killer? We don't even know, just some kid that probably that same day he learned how to use a Glock. You guys remember Brandon when he died in the first season? We only saw him like 5 minutes in total and his death had easily 3 times more impact on the show and on the characters like Omar or Wallace, enough to make Omar help the police to take down the Barksdales back then. It was all around the show when he died, everyone knew what happened and they were all talking about it, when Prop Joe, D' Angelo and Stringer died, they died at the end of the episode, and here? Omar didn't even get that, he died in the middle of it and the show kept running like it didn't happen. I'm not asking for a fancy, stylish or dramatic death, I'm really not, if Omar is gonna die, Ok, what can we do? Marlo is on his Van and he sees Omar getting in a store, he gets off the Van, goes to the store, Omar walks out but before that Marlo gets in with a gun pointing at him they exchange some words, Marlo tells him something like, good try, but I win or something and Marlo shoots him in the head and kills him, and The Wire's credits theme starts playing, somebody tell me, I'm I really asking for something dramatic, fency or stylish death? The best character from the Show and he dies just like that? As I said, his death makes 100% sense, that's not the problem, the problem is that writers got rid of the best character from The Wire by far, and he died like he was just another random drug dealer like those who were dying in the 3rd season. I know this is not Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul to give a priority to characters, but this is too much, I'm sorry, this is waytoo much, him dying is Ok, completely Ok, not the way he left, not at all the way he left. I'm really sorry for those who can't see it like that.

A shocking death in Better call Saul reminded me of this episode and how shocked I was in it.

Warning: Spoilers
Omar was not a hero, we all knew he would get killed but I have never imagined that he would get killed by a little kid while buying cigarettes, so far this is my top 1 most shocking tv death. I wish hbo make a mini series about Omar childhood with his brother who we learned that was more badass, it would be cool to see older brother teaching younger brother some of the iconic Omar's quotes. Tupac would have been the best in that role but I think Jay pharaoh can do it. I can only hope.

Not as salty about this episode now as I was in 2008
michiganave_p9 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I did not like when this episode first came out and Simon and his team had to kill off Omar. I thought it was a disservice to not either A) Let him ride until the finale, or B) Make him one of the few to get out of the game alive. Simon did neither, so the scene at the later half of the episode was a total shock and make me sick to my stomach.

Now in 2022, I am not that mad about it since what unfortunately happened with Michael K. Williams, but was always hoping the series could be rebooted and he would be in it again as Omar.

Upon Michael's passing, that is when I sort of cooled off about how Simon handled the Omar character, but still makes me sad we won't see any more of the character (or even the series) as it used to be.

In terms of how Season 5 was the close out season of the series, I know no one makes it out of Baltimore alive in hindsight, but this was tough to watch when it first came out. This was probably more due to the fact the show was ending more than anything else.

I interviewed Dick Chaney once
snoozejonc25 January 2023
Omar continues to attack Marlo's drug corners, whilst progress is made on the several police investigations thanks to McNulty's fake serial killer.

This is a classic episode with memorable story and character moments.

There is not much I can say without spoiling, but the plot involving several police investigations moves significantly forward and certain scenes sowing progress feel satisfying but ironic in how they link to McNulty's shenanigans.

McNulty has a lot of screen time and there is plenty of good drama and great black comedy. The exchange with Beadie is powerful and the psychological profile in Quantico is absolutely hilarious. Dominic West is on great form as ever, making you laugh, cringe and frustrated in numerous scenes.

It is a big episode for Omar and related characters. He has several ironic scenes that stay with you after the credits roll. Michael K. Williams is on top form throughout.

The top level political manoeuvring continues to feel quite soul-destroying when you see the likes of Carcetti and Clay Davis putting their own interests above everything. All these scenes feel plausible and one sequence of a certain person watching himself perform once again sums up his character nicely.

David Simon really went to town in his depiction of certain characters at the Baltimore Sun and the arc involving good guy Gus and glory-hunting sensationalist Scott Templeton is getting incredibly tense. Whether or not this is a fair reflection of Simon's previous career, only he and his former colleagues really know.

At this point in the overarching narrative the writers wonderfully lay the foundations to tie up loose ends relating to various characters, particularly the likes of Bubbs, Michael and Dukie, that were so prominent in previous episodes.

The Man Who Broke His Word
caballero-1930 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
About a month ago I watched my favorite episode from one of my favorites series and in that episode one of the main characters died, that was the second best send-off I had ever seen, it was a flurried but beautiful farewell, but now Omar's death is the best send-off I've seen, and his death is neither glorious, beautiful or dreadful, Omar's death is just realistic cuz that's how it happens in Baltimore's streets

It's interesting the way it happened, a little kid did it by doing a replication of what he sees and hears on the corners, just like another kid acting like Omar in previous episodes.

Warning: Spoilers
Well well well. A certain character ate a bullet out of completely nowhere this episode. It genuinely made me physically jump when it happened because no one, I repeat no one would expect it to happen. At first I was somewhat annoyed because they treated his death like any other scene. But when you think about it, how lucky was Omar to make it as far as he did? I was always wondering why no one just capped him, and well that's exactly what ended up happening. It's a shame because I was looking forward to what I expected to be an exciting showdown between him and Marlo. I can only assume that his death was written in to make it look like Marlo's in the green. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets a surprise death too. As for the rest of the episode, it was solid. We got McNulty laid out bare here, first by the FBI profiler who pretty much got him down to a tee, and then at the end as he tries to reason with Beadie. I think there's no denying that he's a damaged, obsessive man, but that's what's made him one of the best characters on a show full of great characters. This case is almost up and I can't really predict how it will go. I just hope that the last couple of episodes are police work heavy because the other plot lines like the Sun and Mayor Carcetti are really slowing this season down

Disaster strikes
kmmovies1729 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't enjoyed this season nearly as much as the prior ones. But I reserved judgement, because in prior seasons I had similar concerns, but the story always managed to work back together and become relevant and enjoyable. But I've lost hope for this finale after this episode.

I've seen comments and discussions saying Omar's death was good writing because The Wire is a realistic show and doesn't need to be dramatic and climactic. I disagree wholeheartedly. If that's your logic then let me remind you, this season is being driven by A FAKE SERIAL KILLER INVENTED BY THE POLICE. That isn't realistic in any way shape or form. It's dramatic and over the top. So we really couldn't get some drama for Omar? We couldn't have him go down in a gunfight with Marlo and crew? Stringer Bell gets a dramatic and intense death scene, but Omar gets capped 10 minutes into an episode by a kid? No.

I understand this isn't like other shows. It's never been about dramatic battles, sacrifices, heroes, or any other cliche. But Omar deserved better.

Outstanding episode of terrific series
85122213 December 2023
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Clarifications", 8 episode of "The Wire" season 8 gave us a twist i couldn't imagine happening. Had no clue how events will turn out, but surely was not expecting this. I will not spoil it a twist in a show which is 16 years old - i will leave it for it to discover for lucky ones who have not have seen this masterpiece and will discover it for a first time. On the other hands, just like with ton of grim reality The Wire was showing trough its outstanding almost 5 seasons now i'm not surprised - this is after all one of the if not the most authentic life on streets depiction i have ever seen on a small screen market.

Terrific episode in every way.

The best episode of The Wire, and also my least favorite
marvincowell18 December 2023
This episode is why The Wire isn't my favorite show of all time, but it's also why The Wire is the best show I've ever seen.

I got really attached to Omar Little during my viewing of the show. He's the first television character I truly felt worried for. And as such, his death really messed with me. From the shear anticlimax, to the screams of the girl at the counter, it was brutal. And to be frank, I don't like it, but I'm clearly not supposed to. David Simon didn't sit hear thinking "oh man, I'm sure people are really going to love this!" No, he didn't. Because good storytelling isn't always what you want to happen.

The payoff to his death is brilliant, and I believe Marlos final appearance in the show is the greatest scene in any piece of media I have ever seen. I told myself that if the conclusion to Omar Littles character was satisfying that it would be the best TV show I'd ever seen, and it was satisfying, but not in the way you'd expect. Instead of revenge, or an emotionally charged death, it's brutally poetic irony. And that's why The Wire is the only piece of media I feel comfortable giving a 10/10.

Of course, The Wire is much more than Omar. And he isn't even the only character on the show I ended up getting really attached to, Bubbles was my second favorite and he got the best ending of the whole series. But the character of Omar was my favorite part, even in a sea of other amazing stories.

Thank you, the crew to this show, for making such a thematically brilliant masterpiece.

Unsatisfied

Warning: Spoilers
I understand that when you play the game like Omar you ain't gonna die pretty, which is exactly why the writers wrote his death in the least satisfying way. But come on man this is television, and if Omar's death was actually climactic like the rest of his story, no one would've complained.

Season 5 is Mid...
be23zE3 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just not feeling season 5 as much as the other seasons.

For starters, the resurrection of obsessive and destructive McNualty feels contrived. I found his sudden lack of absence and change of character in the previous season more bearable - at least more interesting characters and plot lines were allowed more screen time. This season just feels like the same old same old with the addition of the news room.

Secondly, the news room was an exciting addition at first but is not as interesting as the story progresses. It was an ingenious addition to the series but the execution did not land like the school system from season 4 or the politics from season 3, although, it has led to some funny interactions between the "serial killer" and Scott.

Anyway, this episode in particular (and the last one as well) was kind of a lull. Everything has been played safe - except, of course, for the death of Omar. It pissed me off how silently he went out initially but it was inevitable. His character had been a fantastical wild card in a series that is sometimes eerily grounded in reality. His arrest or death was bound to happen any episode now.

Probably the most hated character finally gets put down. Nobody likes a thief and Omar was nothing but a dirty degenerate thief. I'm so happy. Best episode since that bum Wallace got put down. Yee Haw!
