Bad screen writing 101
Rassilon913 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
OK, let's dispense with the obvious. You cannot adapt a novel this lengthy into a two hour film without discarding huge amounts of material. Accepting that, adaptation becomes a question of judgment and craft. I'm sorry to say that both of those traits seem sorely lacking in this film. The previous 4 outings have all been fairly successful in creating logical plot flow, cause and effect relationships and maintaining at least some of the charm of the literary works they are based on. The current film is just a mess. Scenes from the book are simply hung together with no sense of one thing leading to another, vital information is rushed into the film only seconds before it is needed to explain further events and bad choices seem to have been made when good choices were available, using the same or less screen time.

Here are a few examples of what I mean, and this is by no means a complete list.

Harry's estrangement from Ron and Hermione, the emotional core of the first half of the book, is resolved by a scene in the film where he comes to them at breakfast and asks them if he can join them. This scene would have great emotional resonance if we had only seen, at some point prior to this, a scene of Harry not eating with them. As it is presented here, it is just a bit awkward. Those who have read the book can fill in the blanks but, presumably, this film is supposed to work for those who haven't read it as well.

In the book, The Weasley twins dramatic fireworks exit from Hogwarts serves the plot, diverting Umbridge so that Harry can contact Dumbledore. With that part of the plot removed, the scene only exists as an excuse for some effects shots. That screen time could have been used to much greater effect elsewhere.

In the book, the room of requirement appears to Neville, because he has need of a hiding place. That's the concept, the room appears to who needs it. There is internal logic. In the film, the room simply appears to him, with no rhyme or reason, as he is strolling by. The scene, as it appears in the book, would have taken no additional screen time and would have given the film better logical flow.

The absence of Hagrid is mentioned only briefly, with no sense of concern, at the beginning of the film and then completely dispensed of until nearly act 3, when it is suddenly announced "Hagrid is Back!" as if it should have been weighing on everyones mind. Well it won't weigh on anyones mind unless you impart it any significance earlier on. The fact that he, and his half brother are introduced only minutes before they are necessary to resolve the Umbridge plot line is just bad craft.

I could go on and on about this, but I'll let those examples stand for themselves. There was much that was good in this movie, in terms of performance, effects and design, which is why I am giving it a 6 rather than the 2 the screenplay deserves.

This is a really good Harry Potter Game!
natperkins7 July 2012
I have to say, with my experience with Harry Potter games, from playing the first one on PSone to playing the horrible Goblet of Fire on PS2. I got this game after finishing the Prisoner of Azkaban. This is a really good Harry Potter game to play, as you can explore Hogwarts and other places, find secret passages and go on quests. The new way of spell casting is excellent as well...even though sometimes you can accidentally cast the wrong spell with the right-analogue stick. It's a fun game to play and tones of things to do! Duelling is fun to do as well, as learning spells is easy and difficult at the same time. Collecting discovery points is a good system and the awards you get...are alright.

Overall, I'd give this game 8 out of 10, the graphics are alright, could of been a little better with the character design, but the game play is really good. It's a good game and I think picking it up one day is a good idea.

Book's Always Better, but Visual Masterpiece
ckammer21 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I am an avid reader of the Harry Potter series and a faithful fan of the movie versions. This means that I am concurrently critical and complimentary toward "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." I love seeing the magic of the book brought to the big screen, but at the same time I miss the details that the directors or editors fail to include (although I realize that this particular book in the Harry Potter series is over 800 pages, and to fit all that into one movie would be asking a bit much).

"Phoenix" starts with a bang, and we are treated to a full-action sequence only about five minutes into the film. From there things get a little muddy, as the many details and/or facts are left to be discerned by the viewer with often only one line of dialogue for explanation: In the book version, when Harry uses magic outside of Hogwarts, he receives at least three communications from the Wizarding world regarding his punishment. First a letter that informs him he's been expelled. Then letters from Ron Weasley's father and Sirius Black, telling him to stay put and that his expulsion has been put on hold until after a disciplinary hearing at the Ministry of Magic. In the movie, Harry receives one letter (the expulsion from Hogwarts), and then in practically the next scene he is rescued from the Dursleys's by the Order of the Phoenix. During the rescue, Kingsley Shacklebolt mentions off-handedly that Harry's expulsion is not definite. If you aren't listening closely, you'll miss it.

If you haven't read the book version, there will be a lot of those moments in the movie. If you have read the book, you may be like me, wishing things had been explored further. Nymphadora Tonks (Sirius's relation), is a wonderful character in the book and her part in the movie (played by the lovely Natalia Tena) is too fleeting. Remus Lupin, who was a main character in book and movie three ("Prisoner of Azkaban") suddenly appears in "Phoenix" and not much is mentioned of his return. Percy Weasley, who has estranged himself from the rest of his family and is helping Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge in his crusade against Dumbledore, also briefly appears in one scene mid-way through the movie, and then is never seen again. Luna Lovegood (played by Potter newcomer Evanna Lynch) is an engaging character, but she seems almost like she's just in the movie for show rather than substance.

On to the positive: The effects in this movie are stupendous. I felt transported watching Harry and the Order of the Phoenix members flying broomsticks past Buckingham Palace. The climax of the movie (Dumbledore and Voldemort battling in the Ministry of Magic) was worth the price of admission alone. Some of the set designs were direct from the pages of the book: Dolores Umbridge's office, the family tree tapestry in Sirius's house, Harry's disciplinary hearing and the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic.

Imelda Staunton's portrayal of Dolores Umbridge was right on the money. And Helena Bonham Carter, who played the insane Bellatrix Lestrange, was unrecognizable as she was so dedicated to her role. I am also amazed at how Daniel Radcliffe's acting has progressed year by year as these movies have been released. This is not a boy who was just cast into the lead role because his features were similar to how Harry Potter has been described in the books.

I would recommend this movie. Overall, I would recommend reading the book first and then seeing the movie. I would say out of the five Harry Potter movies that have been released, I would probably rate this as the first or second best.

Hey people! This isn't the movie, it's the game, stop reviewing it as if it's the movie!
cheezdontgowitm313 August 2007
(This comment is on the Wii version) The Wii, I think (and others probably think so too), is the perfect system for this game, and maybe for the next 2. The controllers on the Wii now make it feel like YOU'RE the wizard that's casting the spell, which is quite fun and cool. The graphics are amazing and the place looks just like in the movie. There's so much detail and so much to explore. I'm also glad that the real people from the movie (most of them) voiced the voices in the game. Another thing is that there are some things fro the game that actually go with the book, things that weren't in the movie. But there are some bad things too, like the camera was kinda bad because it sometimes gets the wrong thing that I'm aiming at, the game seemed a little rushed and like 3/8 (maybe more) of it is just scenes and skips around and stuff. But overall, this is a great game, I'm not sure how it is on the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, or the PC, or any other system it's on, but it may be great because how much more of the castle and stuff there is to explore. But I recommend the Wii version because you get into it so much more than the others. Oh, and another thing, people, why are you reviewing this as the movie? This is the video game page! That's why in parenthesis it says VG.

My updated review.
Hedlem21 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I reviewed this game here almost a year ago, and decided to come back to test its lasting appeal.

My opinion of the game has gone down somewhat, especially as, once story mode is completed, there's pretty much nothing to do. Yes, there's all the special things and discovery points to find, but once you get all of these, it's not as if anything really happens. And the minigames do get tiring after a while. Also, a big problem that I remember having was that the characters feel clunky, and controlling them is strenuous and tedious at the best of times. In addition to this, the NPCs don't really seem to do anything except walk around the corridors, talk to each other, or push each other. You don't see spontaneity anywhere, and no one ever walks into a classroom or is seen with a bag or a big pile of books. (Not to mention the fact that older students are just enlarged smaller students - they don't look like they've grown naturally, just ballooned.)

However, this game IS a great start. Visually, the game can hardly be flawed: the landscapes are stunning and photorealistic, the lighting used throughout the game is impeccable, and the camera angles are superb and allow full aesthetic appreciation, even if you can't actually change them yourself. Furthermore, I do think the characters animate pretty realistically, even if a bit slow and clunky. The music is great, and the effects are great too. So bring on HBP!

Nonetheless, the game as it is shows great stupidity: the tutorial levels in Grimmauld Place are idiotic. Instead of simply picking up your clothes and neatly placing them in your suitcase, Harry Potter MUST use Wingardium Leviosa, a process taking nearly four times as long. And to clear a room, you have to use Depulso on all the cupboards, chairs, lamps and tables, something that would undoubtedly break all the objects, right?

As for interactivity: there is little. While the game is advertised as open-ended, this is a lie of omission: yes, you CAN roam free about a full Hogwarts map, with no limitations, and you can find secrets along the way, but you can't really DO anything. There aren't any secret passages (apart from portraits - there's nothing actually hidden) and there's nothing particularly interesting to find. The game, then, is pretty linear. And though the story mode does boast some stunning set pieces, the cinematics are only just okay, with Harry looking like a screwed up Lothario-type character, and the character skins look like they've just been stretched over the bodies.

So overall, this game is a good start. This game gives you great visuals, but not great practicality or functionality. It does need some fine tuning, and, looking at a screenshot recently released for the HBP game, it looks like the developers are sticking to the visual style, which is good to see. I just hope they're now focusing on expanding the universe a bit (Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley perhaps?), giving us more to do, and, for goodness' sake, fixing those damn controls!

A very great game!!!
griffolyon128 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
(It should be noted that this comment is based on the Wii version of the game.)

As usual I was very skeptical before buying this game seeing as how movie games haven't had the best track record, but I'm glad to say I was wrong.

As usual the story follows the typical movie game formula, highlighting the best moments of the film in the game while not revealing any major spoiler about the film itself.Keeping this in mind the story is well told, and if you've read the book you shouldn't have any trouble comprehending what's going on.

When I first read how the game would be played on the Wii I was very excited, using the wiimote as your wand was almost a nobrainer, and I must say it works for the most part. The controls are sloppy at times,in particular at the beginning, but the controls once gotten used to feel fairly good.

The biggest part of the game is getting to do what Harry does, and go to school,it almost feels a little like Rockstar's Bully. It is a free-roam Harry Potter adventure where you get to go wherever you want whenever you want with no load times in between areas. There is also along with the main quest many side quests(such as going to class) and unlockables to find so there is always something to do,and if those get boring you can always engage in a wizard duel with just about any Slytherin by just pointing your wand at them and shooting them with a combat spell starting the fight.Duels are really, really fun.All of these things combined help create the longest Potter game to date,to get full 100% completion, extras and all, will take you at the shortest a week.

The sound/music is actually the most interesting aspect of the game. The sound effects are great, and so is the music, this being the first Potter game that uses Hedwig's Theme throughout the game. The worst part is the flat voice-acting,although done by most of the film's actors,it is fairly poor VOs.

The two biggest problems with the game are the graphics and the camera. The graphics on the Wii are good for the most part, especially taking into account the size of the game, but the frame rate chugs occasionally, especially in the cutscenes, and battles, but it doesn't detract too much from the enjoyment. The biggest problem is the camera,it is very hard to fix and can get frustrating at times especially in battles.

Now down to the point:

CONCEPT - 9/10 Although not the first time we've seen a free-roam game,it's almost a cliché' now adays, one being set in Harry's world feels like a breath of fresh air.

GRAPHICS - 7/10 These are some good graphics for the Wii,especially taking into account the scope of the game, but the chugging frame-rate lost this at least one point.

SOUND/MUSIC - 8/10 The sound effects and music are superb, but the flat voice-acting detracts from the emotion in the cutscenes.

CONTROLS - 8/10 Although clunky at times,it overall works, and once you get used to it you feel like a wizard.

GAMEPLAY - 7/10 Works well for the most part, but the awful camera that is hard to fix really detracts from the enjoyment at times.Plus certain spells are hard to cast well, and require much mastering to be good at.

UNLOCKABLES/EXTRAS/SIDE-QUESTS - 10/10 This game has tons of extras, and for any Harry Potter fan is worth the hours of collecting.

FUN FACTOR - 10/10 Although it has its problems it is just too much fun for that to drag you down.

Accumulated score: 8.5/10!!!

Final thoughts:This is a really fun game, even if you aren't a fan it is worth at least a rental, and if you are a fan go and buy this game immediately. The ability to explore Harry's world and do what he does on a daily basis is just too much fun.

My Final Score is based off of its fun factor, and from a Harry Potter fan's perspective.

A superbly fun: 10/10!!!!!!

Probably the best movie yet...But still missing to much to be great..
iluvuuraqt_9114 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Okayy...so this movie? Not too bad. I do understand the need to make the book shorter in order to fit into the movie but honestly, did they have to cut out so many great scenes? I was particularly looking forward to the scene where Hagrid was kicked out of Hogwarts. That would have been a great piece to watch, but instead Hagrid is very scarcely mentioned in this movie, along with Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin...and Firenze wasn't even introduced.

I thought, although i dislike Michael Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore in previous movies, i think he was closer to being the real Dumbledore in this movie...I think he did very well...I take my hat off to him

I also believe too much emphasis was placed on the D.A. If perhaps some of those scenes were cut they could have put in some of the the others. This movie makes enough money that surely it could have been extended another 20-30 minutes?

And also it felt very rushed, things didn't flow properly, and they added things in that didn't make sense at all...If the parts of the book that corresponded with the altered scenes in the movie had been put there it would have made more sense instead of doing it this way...

Dobby was once more cut out completely... And Neville did the parts that Dobby was supposed to do..

Some scenes were done terrifically...like the fight at the ministry of magic...but they changed the curse that hit Sirius from "Stupefy" to "Avada Kedavra"...The look and Harry's Face when his godfather passed through the veil just made your heart go out to him...

Other than that the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort was brilliantly done...even though the Statues weren't used like they were supposed to be...it was still very well done...

They miss out most of the scene where Harry destroys Dumbledore's office, and he never asks Nearly Headless Nick about ghosts which i thought would have been a touching scene...and the mirror Sirius is supposed to give Harry isn't even mentioned...

The guy who plays Sirius, Gary Oldman, i thought rated a mention in my comment because he was so good in this movie...and when he dies in the battle...he is brilliant...

Imelda Staunton played Dolores Umbridge to perfection, I can say no bad about her....

Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have really matured as actors...It's a pity once these Harry Potter movies are finished they will always carry with them that stigma..

The thestrals were good...and Grawp was actually kind of cute...

All in all, one of the better movies...But i'm not entirely sure that is saying very much... For those of you who disagree with me...That is fine..but i still think this movie could have been better with a few little adjustments and if it was better thought out... I feel for David Yates who had to pick and choose between scenes because he is likely to cop some criticism...

I will say this though..if you haven't read the books the movie is absolutely fantastic...if you have read the book...it doesn't compare whatsoever...but do yourself a favour and don't think about the differences, sit back and enjoy the film...

I don't care what people are saying about it - this is a GREAT game! (DS Version)
karl_with-1218 August 2009
I got this game as a birthday present for my Nintendo DS. OK, I know people might say its lame and boring, but actually for me, I found it rather fun.

Lets start off with the graphics. Sure its a bit blurry and cartoony but hey! Do you expect game platforms such as the GBA, DS to just whip up outstanding graphics when its Harry Potter? Come on guys, its not a big deal and it's the gameplay that matters!

Secondly I LOVE the mini-games. My favourite are the classrooms games (Charms, Potions, Herbology especially!) and I also like the After-School Games. Exploding Snap was cool, I love Gobstones but Quiddtich was the best! Well, I started off as a poor player but ended up completing all the levels and winning every match against Slytherin! Boooooooooo Slytherin!

And the missions! I know sometimes you just run around Hogwarts but isn't it fun to just explore and plus there's Wizards Cards, Gobstones etc. which are scattered around Hogwarts to be found! Besides some of the missions were awesome! Like retrieving members of DA, making potions to cure creatures, exploring the OoTP Headquarters and duelling! Speaking off duelling the climax of the game is really cool! I got past the Death Eathers, Bellatrix and You-Know-Who... Voldermort! (Actually I was stuck for ages at the part when Sirius and Harry are duelling against 3 death eaters, but I found you just had to cast Flipendo trio at them!)

Now I completed 86% of the game. And I'm on the final and hardest mission! You have to retrieve all the Wizard cards, gobstones and Berti Box Beans in order to finish the game! I practically looked EVERYWHERE but I still need to find 5 more - it's VERY hard!

Overall, one of the best games I've ever played! And if you're put down what everybody is saying about it don't be! Just take it from me, a person who nearly finished the game and I say, its awesome!

Thanks game creators! I love it!

Amazing...but slightly flawed (a 9.5)
MassiveReader2412 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was amazing, and everything that the director included was done exactly how I wanted it to be done. However, it's what they cut out that detracts from my rating. Three of my favorite scenes from the book were cut (Umbridge in McGonagall's Class, Rita Skeeter's interview (cutting out Miranda Richarson should be a crime), and Umbridge trying to sack Hagrid), and they limited the "War on Umbridge" at Hogwarts. Not only that, this was the shortest film so far. If it had been the longest (or they included those scenes), I'm sure my rating would be a perfect ten.

Aside from that, however, it was an absolutely fantastic movie. Imelda Staunton was perfect for the part of Dolores Jane Umbridge, and Helena Bonham Carter's Bella (Bellatrix Lestrange) was also superb. I particularly enjoyed her cackling at the battle. Evanny Lynch was also a wonderful addition to the cast as the quirky (Loony) Luna Lovegood. The previous actors also continued to show their excellence, and they display a lot of talent.

Of particular note was the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, which was one of the most exciting scenes the movie has to offer. I especially liked that the black clouds surrounding the Death Eaters made them look almost demonic, while the white clouds made to Order members look angelic. Other amusing aspects include the increase in the number of Education Decrees, and D.A. lessons, Dumbledore's escape, and the dialogue in general (especially Luna, Umbridge, Bella, and the interactions between Ron and Hermione).

Just OK Harry Potter? I disagree...
YKyle1025 July 2007
I thoroughly disagree with the above review of this film. It is awesome Harry Potter. Personally, the movie was the book and thats why I liked it so much. I'll even venture to say it was the best one yet or at least close to it.

The things they changed, some of Cho's roll, Dobby's absence and giving his part to Neville again, Firenze not being in the story, all made sense and worked well. The strong essentials of the plot were still there though. The finale, in my opinion, they nailed. They captured the strength of Dumbledore and the ruthlessness of Voldemort very well. Ralph Fiennes is a fantastic Voldemort and he does great here. Dumbledore's appearance at the ministry was kind of awe inspiring and I like Michael Gambon as Dumbledore more and more (although they need to put the half-moon glasses on him.) The big death and Harry's reaction were perfect, as well as Lupin holding him back. Imelda Staunton nailed Umbridge and she did a fantastic job. Daniel Radcliffe's angst as Harry was great and the main three, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as well, have become great actors. Luna Lovegood was portrayed perfectly by Evanna Lynch. The professors, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Maggie Smith were great as usual, most notably Alan Rickman, who's colorful portrayal of Snape steals the movie. The Weasly Twins exit was greatly done too.

The story itself moves fast and keeps you into the plot very well and I can't wait until Half-Blood Prince comes out as well as the absolutely fantastic Deathly Hallows.

Unthinkable: Harry Potter lacks magic!
leplatypus1 May 2010
At least, it isn't about the games from "1001 Arabian nights", because getting at number five, my pleasure is already a bit diluted and don't have fun anymore.

As in the book, it's another school year at Hogwarts. But, when its reading brought me emotion, this video game leaves me cold. The blame goes to the developers who think above all, chores list, challenge, beat the game, etc… I'm really fed up with the things to collect, the tasks to do.

On the other hand, the graphics have never been so beautiful: it's really a virtual visit of the sets on the movie. But, as the school is huge, five minutes later, you are tired from running in the corridors.

This time, the gameplay is very easy thus you can't be stuck. The only difficult moment for me was to levitate some pack of food up a hill. The final level against Voldemort is playable so it's OK. However, the commands for magic are awful with a mouse so everything has to be done with the keys.

In conclusion, a serious improvement from the previous one (Goblet of fire) but not very inspired!

Brilliant Movie
scubafort11 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Being a book fanatic, I love it when a movie captures as much of a book as is possible. I realize that not everything is possible to capture and anyone attending this movie would do well to keep that in mind. Order of the Phoenix is a fair sized volume and I see how they had to combine certain scenes while completely doing away with others for time constraints.

That said, this movie was fantastic. The magical effects were amazing. The best scene, judging by the crowd's reaction, was Dumbledore telling the Ministry he has no intention of going to Azcaban, flinging his arms skyward and he and Fawkes bursting into a flaming exit. The audience went wild clapping and hooting. The duel between Dumbledore and He-who-has-no-nose in the Ministry was everything I hoped.

The essence of this book was captured brilliantly by the actors old and new. The choices for casting Umbridge, Luna and Bellatrix were spot on. While I have issues with how Gambion plays Dumbledore in the other HP movies, he does very well here. Alan Rickman's Snape is,as usual, a joy to watch. The trio, Rupert, Daniel and Emma are really fine actors. They truly carried this film and as they and the story mature, so does their acting. The dark drama requires quite a range and they deliver in spades.

All in all, it's the best movie to date and I left the theater eager for the next one.

Needs the action of POA
brett63-218 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
First of all I need to congratulate EA games for their redesign of Hogwarts, though there is much to be improved. However I will start with the positives: The redesign of Hogwarts is a complete success. Finally there are places that you can go to that are from the movies eg. The owlery, the clock tower, Umbridges office and the list goes on. But not only does it include content from OOTP but goes right back to the first two film, with Moaning Myrtles bathroom and the room where Tom Riddle cornered Hagrid worth Aragog in COS. However there are a few inaccessible areas such as the Divination classroom, Chamber of Secrets and Dumbledores Office (all places I would love to see released in the HBP VG). You can also explore 12 Grimmauld Place, home of Sirius Black. For the explorer this is a great game, however after a while the excitement wheres off and you find your self taking 10min to get from one place to another. However there are the portrait shortcuts that are there to aid you once you help them out.

The graphics for a 2007 game is rather mediocre, and hopefully EA will improve them in the HBP. However I think that EA did not utilise the resources that they had from the previous games. For example I think that the spell graphics and the amount of spells used were rather poor. In the previous game GOF they had a great selection of different spells great spell graphics, this however deteriorated in the OOTP. with spells such as stupefy simply being a red spark. I would love to see spells such as Aguamenti, Glacius and maybe a really cool fire spell for the HBP. I also think that there needed to be a better dueling system. I also found that on the wii system you could not attack any student or teacher that you felt like, however in the PC version of the game you were free to attack whoever you wanted. It also says on the synopsis that you can play as Dumbledore and Sirius, this is to a degree, false as you only play both of them for around 1min, in their dual against Voldy or Bella. I also think that they should have different times of the day, like they had in the previous games.

I also think that there need to have been more things to do during the game, as the endless day gets VERY boring and you don't get the feeling that you have completed the game.

I also think that there needs to be more action in the game and more things to do, like POA. such as collectors cards, Bertie Botts beans etc, and side quests.

I should also mention that there is VERY little difference between the wii and other console versions, so don't waste money on buying more than one game.

All in all Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a successful game, but certainly has room for improvement.

Harry Potter 5...It Could Have Been Better.
gildavis12 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The problem of taking JK Rowling's longest, and perhaps best novel had to weigh heavily on David Yates as he began filming the project last year. In short, just how do you reduce a 900 + page novel to just two hours and eighteen minutes and end up with a successful film that does more then coast on hype? There were good and bad things about the choices that were made. Let's begin with the script. There were allot of places where it would have worked better if they had not strayed from the original dialog in the book. From the opening scene in the playground through the dementor attack and later at the Dursley's home, for example, it would have flowed better and not taken anymore time to do it that way. The talent of Richard Griffen and Fiona Shaw would have been showcased better had they had the chance to act out their lines from the novel complete with multiple owls dropping in and Dumbledore's messege to Aunt Petunia. The problem continued as the film went on primarily with not letting the right characters do their parts. Another example was not casting an actress to play Cho's friend Marietta Edgecombe. In the book, she was the person who turned snich and led to Dumbledore's Army being found out. These little touches would have made a better film. Another let down had to do with minimizing the roles of some of the other cast members, chief among them Maggie Smith. McGonagal's bad relationship with Umbridge was one of the best parts of the book, especially the scene (not filmed) in her office when Harry decides that he wants to become an Auror. Later the scene when she was hit by stunning spells by ministry officials as Unbridge attempts to have Hagrid removed.(Again, Not-filmed.) But the most glaring mistake, in my opinion, was the end of the film. Harry should have had the chance to confront Dumbledore after the fight at the ministry. It should have been played like the book. Of course there were good moments too. The effects were wonderful and the principle cast turned in their usual excellent performance. But this film is better appreciated by those who have not read the novel.

Bad game

In India, this game is sold on the PC for Rs. 999, about $20 or so. Even after hearing the mixed reviews of this game, my mind didn't deter me from buying a DVD version of this game. And I apologize for that. It was a complete waste of money and time. Let's first see the good points of this game ( I'd to rack my brains to find some): 1) Hogwards is large: This, in one way, is good and bad. But as we are discussing about the 'good' points of the game, I'll tell that because it is large, there is a lot to see and discover. Even minute details and places are included in this game.

2) No loading time: Ah, this is one good thing about this game. In the second and the third parts, I got bugged and agitated when there was loading after every five minutes or so ( especially in the second). Here, there were no loading and you didn't have to bang your head against the wall to wait for the game to load after leaving every room or so.

3) Homely Hogwarts: This too has its pros and cons. Pros is that you feel as if you are at home and not at some military school where you are forced to do things. There are innumerable secrets to dig out at Hogwarts.

4) No bean or cards collecting: This is a good thing they've done. Collecting beans and cards becomes hectic and boring.

5) Open ended game: Advantage is that there are a lot many things to do even after completing the story mode and that takes some time to finish off. So, if you buy the game, you won't be able to finish it off in three days or so.

6) Excellent music: The background music was superb but it felt as if you wanted to hear more of that in the game.

5 pros! Think its a lot? Now lets review the cons of this game: 1) No lives: This is so dumb about this game. You don't have any lives. So, you either win or lose, depending on the storyline. I mean, if you are meant to lose, then even if you fight, there's no chance to win.

2) Bad voicing: Sometimes you wish that the main characters don't lend their voices for the game. I wasn't able to follow a lot many lines which the characters spoke.

3) Terrible duels: When you're in a fight, then you twist and turn your mouse and cast all sorts of spells. You don't even know what the others are casting.

4) Very less information given: Even in the manual, almost nothing is given about the game. In many of the places, you don't even know what to do.

5) Useless partners: You have two friends and it says that they can help you when you're puzzled or so. But they give such terrible clues and speak the same things over and over again that you wish that they weren't there.

6) It says that you visit many places from the book. But its so stupid to see that you spend only five minutes or so there and don't get to enjoy at all.

7) Horrible AI: Characters are so dumb that in some places, where you require more than one character to do the work, they help one in a blue moon and keep standing like dead logs.

8) Its boring to see the same place again and again. I mean, if you want to reach a place, you take almost five to ten minutes reaching there.

9) Terrible mini games: The mini games are atrocious, horrible and boring. No fun to play them.

All these factors contribute in making this game useless and intolerable. 3/10.

OotP on PS3. An insult to Harry potter fans, movies, books, and even the rest of the games as a whole.

Hate. Let me tell you about how much I have come to hate this game since I began to play it. There are 86 Billion neurons in wafer thin folds and creases that fill my brain. If the word "HATE" was engraved into each and every nanoangstrom of those tens of billions of neurons, it would not equal one one-billionth of the hatred I feel toward this game and the developer team that brought it into this world at this micro-instant.

To say that this game is flawed would be the biggest understatement of my life up to this moment. The PlayStation 3 version of this game is the single worst experience of my life. The only possible way for me to express my hatred and loathing for this game in its entirety is to go through it step by step, so lets get to it.

1. The bulk of this game is running slowly back and forth doing fetch quests for other students to make them go to the room of requirement, if it isn't then let that be a testament to how much of a drag it is to get them to go there that I forgot everything that comes before that section of the game, but even after that you're still doing that same thing for nearly every single mission and any other type of mission is usually even slower and more annoying which leads into my nect problem.

2. The combat system is clunky slow irritating and a terrible gimmick. Not that needing to fight students is annoying (though it is) but it's that the parts where you do fight is so damn few and far inbetween you wonder why the hell they're there to begin with, and if that wasn't bad enough the combat system itself is a broken mess! Who on the dev team thought that it was a fun smart or interesting idea to make every spell and attack be bound to the right analogue stick!? Because of the spells being bound to the right analogue stick you 1) have no control over the camera and need to wrestle with it constantly just to get where the hell you need to go and 2) constantly send off the wrong spell most of the time. What's that? You wanted to cast Stupefy? Well too bad pal, you just cast Levicorpus and Protego 10 times instead. Ontop of that because you need to spin around the stick to get the right spells out the enemies can cast way more spells than you way faster, it makes it complete hell to fight even with companions helping you, even worse is when you do get hit it knocks you on your ass for about 10 full seconds which lets the enemies just pummel you with attacks and kill you piss easy, which also reminds me, you have no indicator of how much health you have, no healthbar no animation no screen effect nothing, and more often than not you dont't get the chance to just try the fight again, no you get sent wayyyyy back and need to run all the way back to the fight which in some spots can take about 10 real life minutes to get back to because of how slow you move combined with the npc's everywhere blocking your path and fighting the camera to show you where to go, just to get your ass handed to you again! It's even worse when it's a fight that you are required to beat to continue the game.

3. The characters Never. Shut. Up. They're all always running their mouths making fun of you or complaining about you or a thousand other things to do with you. But it's even worse when you talk to Hermione and Ron, your two companions and "hint system" that you're supposed to ask for help whenever you get stuck somewhere or forget what to do or just need to know where generally to go. Most of the time these two are useless and just repeat what the quest is or yell at you to go find something somewhere but don't bother telling you or even giving you a hint to where tongo or what youre supposed to do for anything! To fully express how irritating it is I'll give and example of a mission where they're completely useless and are infact a detriment: A student has given you a mission to go find 5 talking gargoyles for his homework assignment, but they're hidden around the castle and you have no clue where they are or where to even start looking, so you go ask Ron and Hermione for help maybe they've seen them around the castle over the years, but no, they just parrot the mission and tell you to go find the statues. Even worse is while you are looking for them they never shut up about telling you to look for the gargoyles constantly reminding you thats your one and only goal to find the 5 stupid gargoyles for the little brats homework. The only thing they do during a mission like this tell you how many are left once you do find them hidden in the most obscure of spots that you would never think to look for them in. This is how they act for most of the game.

4. The Marauders Map is a useless guide that tries to force you to take routes through the game that you can't even access because you don't have the password to the paintings. "Well you don't have to follow the rpute it takes you just walk there yourself" good luck trying to navigate around this giant maze without getting lost every minute that you spend trying to get from just one area to the next, and even when you do get the passwords for the portrait doors they just take you all over the place and usually never where you expect them to. Example: Where do you think a portrait in a hallway by a courtyard in the middle of the school would take you? Did you say "To a boat house on the edge of the water a mile and then some away from that courtyard"? Then you got it right! Whose idea was it to make them take you to the weirdest possible areas when you finally are able to use them? It's a complete mess, which is fitting for them I suppose because this entire game is a mess.

I can keep going, I could go on for even longer from here, but I feel I've wasted enough of my life hating this game and wasted enough of your time explaining how god awful this game is.

Please god if anyone see's this review, don't buy this game. I got this copy of mine from a bargain bin at gamestop for like 4 dollars and I still want a refund because if I got those 4 dollars back I could go out and buy myself something like a chicken sandwhich, and i can garauntee that chicken sandwhich would have brought me infinitely more joy and fulfilment than this game ever has. If you ever run into a copy of this game somewhere, your best option is to just run in the opposite direction of it.
