So which movies has Roger Corman starred in?
screenwriter-1219 March 2014
From a previous review: "With Gary pulling off the classic (Roger)Corman trick of casting himself in the lead (keeps the budget down and puts the producer on set every day :-)" WTF? Corman has probably produced over 100 films and though he has sometimes made Hitchcock-style walk-on appearances, he has never played the lead in any film! 'Bikeboy' references Corman about 10 times in his review but has he actually ever seen a single Corman movie? Smells like someone involved in the production trying hard to link Roger's good name with this inferior product... Jeff Burr is a good atmospheric director given decent material but unfortunately this messy film falls far below his usual standard, with the late lamented Richard Lynch being about the only reason to sit thru it. Whoever thought having a Luger pistol as a world-threatening super-weapon was a great idea? An excellent handgun for sure but not exactly the Ark of the Covenant...

Waste of time indie thriller
Leofwine_draca10 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
GUN OF THE BLACK SUN is an indie thriller, made as a UK/Romanian co-production and shot on the streets of London. The barely-existent storyline involves a cursed Nazi pistol that falls into the wrong hands and soon leads to some bad people doing some bad things. As with most indies of this ilk, most of the running time is packed with incessant dialogue, all of it badly scripted and very boring. Half is set in suburban homes and half in seedy nightclubs. Bizarrely, former footballer Ian Wright has a main role and is quite terrible, although veteran B-movie actor Richard Lynch also makes a surprising appearance.

A Brit Biker flick in which cigarette smugglers take on Ex Nazis who possess a supernatural Luger - delicously bonkers
bike106615 March 2011
Gary Douglas, writer, producer and star of Gun, embodies the spirit of Roger Corman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000339/) with Gun of the Black Sun.

Tarantino reveres this kind of high energy film making but has completely lost the ability to deliver it on the kind of low to no budgets Corman and Gary so obviously relish. Quick cars, fast motorbikes and even faster women wrapped up in a glossy plot of old Nazis taking over the world with supernatural hokum involving a demon empowered Luger makes this an absolute classic for genre fans, bikers and lovers of hardcore euro action that usually stars Jason Statham or Jet Li. Like Corman Gary also delivers his action with a message and some character development but he doesn't let that get in the way of the violent mayhem that drives Black Sun faster than a twin turbo big bore V Rod after hitting the nitros button.

With Gary pulling off the classic Corman trick of casting himself in the lead (keeps the budget down and puts the producer on set every day :-) ) but then allowing an experienced genre director, Jeff Burr, to take the reins ensures that every penny of the budget hits the screen and Gun delivers a high gloss bright light feel more reminiscent Ridley Scott than your usual low budget British schlocker.

Gary has also been very shrewd in his casting of Ian Wright, the ex footballer and TV presenter, as Duke, a role he carries off surprisingly well and is clearly leagues ahead of Vinnie Jones in the acting stakes. The Cormanesque eye candy is also all present and correct with the gorgeous Mihaela Sinca playing the lust interest Lorredana and Kristina Cepraga ensuring teenage dreams are always wet as the Neo Nazi dominatrix Ms Kitty.

Black Sun is that very rare thing, a low budget British movie that is comfortable with what it is. The Ace Cafe makes a fantastic backdrop for the brilliantly shot duel of the V Rod and GSXR but it doesn't matter whether it is in London or not. The Romanian countryside is so stunning that we don't care its not Tuscany. Black Sun delivers so bang on the exploitation / action genre button that we also don't care that its not produced by the Luc Besson stable of Transporter hits.

We can just hope that Gary is following that other Corman gambit of having a whole slate of actioners ready to go as soon as Black Sun hits the screens. Britain doesn't need another Mike Lee or Richard Curtis, we need more producers with the chutzpah of Gary Douglas.

An enjoyable B-movie
metalblon-229 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Gun of the Black Sun" is an entertaining B-movie which features the screen villain legend Richard Lynch (Invasion USA, Necronomicon) in one of his last films, the beautiful Kristina Cepraga(Bad Brains) and introducing the main star Gary Douglas in his first starring role in this actioner film with plenty of motorbike and car chases while the storyline submerges us in a secret weapon with mystical powers which belonged to the Nazi era. It also has nice locations in London and in Romania. *SPOILER*: There is also a spectacular sword fight between Richard's character and Mr. Douglas's almost at the end of the movie. A very recommendable actioner directed by the veteran Director Jeff Burr (Leatherface III, Mil Mascaras: Resurrection).

Harley's, Ferrari's, Girls and a mystical gun, what's not to like?
laineythompson-7323229 September 2023
This movie does what all movies are supposed to do! You start watching, it takes you in and you want to see what happens. An entertaining romp around Romania to London tongue in cheek not taking itself seriously, we all had a good time watching it. Lovely to see the wonderful Richard Lynch in his last film role and he does not disappoint. Gary Douglas does a fine job looking somewhat bewildered while all these fantastical events unfold around him. Ian Wright in a film role, worth a look in itself. Sexy looking girls are plentiful, Harley D's are exciting, and can't beat a red Ferrari and a golden Luger. A must see!

So good I've watched it twice

Gun of the Black Sun is a 2011 fantasy film directed by Jeff Burr and starring Gary Douglas, Richard Lynch, and Ian Wright. The film is a thrilling and imaginative adventure that explores the hidden secrets of Nazi occultism and its connection to modern day technology and music. The film follows a Nazi Luger pistol with dark and mystical powers that re-emerges in modern day Bucharest and is taken to London by a media mogul who intends to use its power to recreate the Fourth Reich.

The film showcases the creativity and passion of the filmmakers and the actors. The film manages to combine elements of action, horror, and history in a unique and original way. The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns, the characters are complex and intriguing, the dialogue is witty and clever, and the special effects are impressive and realistic. The film also benefits from excellent editing, lighting, sound, and acting. The highlight of the film is the performance of Richard Lynch as the villainous Damian Lupescu, who brings a lot of charisma and menace to his role.

Gun of the Black Sun has been praised for its originality, coherence, and quality. Some reviewers have also appreciated the film's sensitive and accurate portrayal of Nazi occultism and Romanian culture.

Gun of the Black Sun is a film that should be watched by anyone who loves fantasy and adventure. It is a well made and well written fantasy film that offers a lot of excitement and entertainment. It is not just a film, but an experience. It is a masterpiece of film making and a masterpiece of talent.

Wild octane-filled ride
adrian-503955 October 2023
For a low budget movie, Gun of the Black Sun packs a real punch and is thoroughly enjoyable throughout and it never takes itself too seriously. Featuring a strong and exciting visual style accompanied by a very good soundtrack, the film continues at pace and does not disappoint. Larger than life characters abound, headed by the marvellous scene-stealing performance of Richard Lynch. Hero Gary Douglas is there to save the day and expertly unleashes his classic Irish charm offensive in fending of the bad guys. Even former Arsenal hero Ian Wright puts in a delightful cameo appearance. Great fun!!

Good action romp.

Warning: Spoilers
Fast paced thriller. With great acting and story. Well acted throughout. Good lead and nice use of locations. Almost certainly a cult classic. Great characterisation, with an international cast. Plot requires concentration to follow, as its more usual formulaic drama. Original idea, really well executed, far above and beyond the usual run of the mill action adventure. Nice locations and photography throughout, thus adding to the European vibe. Very similar in class to the likes of Indiana Jones, and Laura Croft-not as big budgets l, however just as entertaining and exciting, with some famous faces to boot.

Best entertaining movie within the budget.
fundamentalfilm8 October 2023
A very well done indie movie who tries to keep in balance Hollywood ingredients: nice photography, well balanced direction, smart script, fast rhythmic editing, great locations, brilliant soundtrack and interesting actors. The role of a leading actor as a main producer helped the movie to stay on the budget and get it done. The international crew, bringing an American director, an Irish producer, a British soccer star and a Romanian DOP spice the script with a unique flavour. The presence of Richard Lynch as the villain character bring this movie to the next level. "Gun of the Back Sun" is a A must see!!!

A modern cult classic
simoncatweazle4 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I watched "Gun of the Black Sun" last week - and I really liked it. The story's imaginative and well paced. The locations are amazing, as is the cinematography - doffing its hat to the likes of "Easy Rider", "Quadrophenia" and even "The Leather Boys" as it passes through some spectacular European backdrops.

The performances are stellar - not least the final appearance on screen by Richard Lynch before his untimely death earlier this year. Certainly a surprise to me, but ex-footballer Ian Wright's appearance is amazing - filling the screen with a presence that suggests that he's a veteran of such things. Elsewhere, the cast explores the remarkable plot-line supremely, holding one's attention despite the ferocious pace of the storyline.

To me, this film has all the qualities to ensure its success; the Nazi/Occult connection a quite unique slant that has rarely (if ever) been explored before.

Despite the minuscule cannon of genuine British cult movies - "Gun Of The Black Sun" will be rightly considered a fine example of imaginative and provocative film-making; a rare commodity these days!

Glorious fun filled film in vibrant colourful cinematography

Warning: Spoilers
High speed chases, beautiful girls, interesting locations in Romania and the U. K. A romantic twist set within an historically based drama from the Second World War, along side a cigarette smuggling operation from Bucharest to London. A golden Luger containing occult powers is thrown into the mix. Gary Douglas has a quietly powerful persona and all the actors did a great job. A very enjoyable exciting unusual screenplay with never a dull moment. And can't finish without mentioning the fabulous soundtrack with a surprise appearance from Jamie Cullum in his original band Taxi. I loved this film so much I can't wait to watch it again!

Nice action film about the Nazis
mohase-7021629 September 2023
Gun of the black sun is a nice and entertaining film, with humour and action (and bikes), which makes it fun to watch. Gary Douglas put a lot of effort into this film, and you can perceive this. There's also a sweet love story building itself all along the film, though it's not a major part of the story.

The film is mostly set in Romania, which is interesting as a not very common location, and the action with the Nazis take us back and forth between England and Romania, so it's nice to see the two different approaches on world war two and the Nazis. Plus, the mystical folklore gives the film a very nice mystery. I recommend it 👍

Warning: Spoilers
An exciting and fast paced screenplay - a gift that keeps on giving. A hard to pull off mix of witty yet measured dialogue, watched with friends the other night and thoroughly enjoyed (planning a second watch soon). Plenty of beautifully shot locations throughout Romania and a few known scenes to those London-based viewers to enjoy. Car chase and motorcycle shots are very exciting - not as much as surprise as the guest appearance of Arsenal's finest Ian Wright haha! Quite raunchy and a bit graphic at points so maybe one for after the watershed - but the historical-based plot (apparently based on some real events of ww2) make it a definite watch, check it out!!

this film has all the qualities to ensure its success -(especially the Nazi/Occult connection)

Gun of the Black Sun The story's imaginative and well paced. The locations are amazing!Ian Wright is spectacular -he fills the screen with a presence . I co-wrote a book some years back called "Your Face Here - British Cult Movies Since the 1960s" where I explored the somewhat meagre canon of British cult movies. To me, this film has all the qualities to ensure its success -(especially the Nazi/Occult connection) , it deserves to succeed and given cult film's longevity -I guarantee the interest will unravel over time.

Darkly unpredictable with a cool edge a must see!
garythompson-6296930 September 2023
Gun of the Black Sun is an enjoyable romp throughout Rumanian Nazi and folk-loric weirdness. There is a golden Luger involved, lots of shapely starlets and the extraordinary appearance of that wizard of football Ian Wright. We love the utterly bizarre connections and this film as it barrels from dizzying punch -ups to top-less beach love trysts with a hero whose ulster accent keeps the whole thing on a terrestrial level. As they used to say about onion bubble gum "Looks like chewing gum, tasks like onion - it's weird. But also Fun.... Deliciously bonkers therefore a must see for a great experience.
