At the Evans cottage, Maggie (Kathryn Leigh Scott) reads about Roger's car crash in the Collinsport Star. Looking for Sam, Burke (Mitchell Ryan) visits. He tells Maggie the accident is now considered "attempted murder." This makes Maggie drop her coffee cup. Sam (Mark Allen) and Roger (Louis Edmonds) are both at the hotel restaurant for their coffee, served by early shift waitress Colleen Kelly (as Susie). Roger reminds Sam they are the only two who know the real 1956 story. Later, with encouragement from Maggie, Burke commissions Sam to paint his portrait. Burke wants it to be painted like the portrait of Jeremiah Collins hanging in the Collinwood drawing room...
Sam is suspicious of Burke, "When a man comes to pry, you don't unlock all the cupboards." Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) upsets her uncle by doubting Burke's guilt. Roger wants him arrested.
This was the last appearance of Mark Allen in the role of Sam Evans. Likewise notable was episode #16's last appearance of George Mitchell as Matthew Morgan. A check into their credits reveals both actors more Hollywood-based during this time, so their time on the series was likely tenuous from the start. Both of these important characters would be re-cast with the more New York-based actors closely associated with the series.
We get a good look at Maggie's mother, "a very beautiful woman," when Burke admires her portrait. There are a couple of references to her over the years, but without a lot of background information. We know the Evans' marriage was a happy one, and her death resulted in Sam and Maggie becoming very close - until the 1956 events. Later, get ready for a great screen capture of Jeremiah Collins' portrait. Stipulating this is the Jeremiah from the 1790s rather than Gabriel's son, his beard helps him vaguely resemble some of the men who have played the role. The image does look like a real man, probably from a photograph, was used for the painting - if so, someone identify him...
