Secret Indictment focuses on the plight of a recently released parolee "Black" played by up and comer D. Sewell. Like many ex-cons, Black finds himself in a constant struggle of trying to suppress his criminal nature in order to live a legitimate lifestyle.
Black seeks employment but his earnest attempts are met with prejudice and ignorance of corporate America which shuns former criminals. With no where to go Black has to swallow his pride & finds himself living on the couch of his ex-girlfriend who out of pity takes him in.
While it is an entertaining film containing many exciting action sequences along with a passionate love scene that may be inappropriate for younger viewers, the film is more of a social commentary than anything else. Secret Indictment allows the viewer to see things through the unique perspective of Black who deals with racial intolerance in his attempts to put his life back together.
What also should be noted is the unique camera angles & direction of the film. Produced in a non-linear perspective similar to such films as Pulp Fiction & Momento makes the the storyline even more compelling.
In an era now where Spike Lee is focusing more on box office friendly movies, Secret Indictment is a breath of fresh air & I would recommend this to anyone especially those who may not have seen many films of this genre.
