Wally turns out to be a bad prankster
AlsExGal18 April 2024
Lumpy Rutherford puts smoke bombs in Wally and Eddie's cars. It's embarrassing but causes no damage. But Eddie wants payback and comes up with a scheme that he thinks will adequately pay Lumpy back. He and Wally tie Lumpy's car to a tree, then Eddie calls Lumpy from a neighbor's house and imitates Julie Foster, saying that she needs help with her geometry homework and that only Lumpy can help. Lumpy charges out of the house, glad to have the admiration of a female, but the joke doesn't go as planned. They had hoped for the car just spinning its wheels, unable to accelerate. Instead, the bottom of Lumpy's car is ripped out when tree meets drive train.

Wally and Eddie run for it, but Wally turns out to not be a very adept prankster. The chain he used to tie car to tree has his dad's name on it as in "return to". How will this all work out? Watch and find out.

There were quite a few of these Eddie/Wally/Lumpy centric episodes in the last two seasons as actor Tony Dow turned into quite the teenage hunk and became very popular with girls. Once Jerry Mathers reached that awkward tween/teen state, he could no longer play the cute little kid like he could in the first few seasons. The exploits of Wally and his friends likely extended the life of the show by a couple of seasons.

Wally's mean streak
LukeCoolHand11 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a pretty good episode. It was fairly funny too. Lumpy puts smoke bombs into Wally and Eddie's car as a practical joke . Eddie and Wally' retaliate .by tying a chain to Lumpy's axle and a nearby tree. When Lumpy tries to leave it yanks the whole axle out of his car. Eddie and Wally are told by Ward and Mr. Rutherford to fix Lumpy's car. They quickly skip to the scene with the car on jack stands or something without showing how it got there which was kind of weird. Eddie and Wally are not mechanics by any means and the repair was very complicated but they get it done without Lumpy's help even though Lumpy is the only one who is sort of a mechanic handy man.

Should have been a sequel !!
tweiss-673683 December 2021
The most unfortunate thing about this series is that they didn't have a sequel with Wally, Eddie, and Lumpy in college. They could have had numerous shows like this one that would have allowed Eddie to continue his marvelous character with Wally as his straight man.

Impossible for Lumpy to drag the car up the driveway
vitoscotti12 September 2021
Lumpy being a good student getting a scholarship didn't last long. Jerry Mathers now perfect for supporting role. Entertaining, lively episode. Best scene when Lumpy's car falls apart. Of course Lumpy yells out "Daddy Daddy."

WE DIDN'T MEAN IT, SORTA'?

I agree with the last reviewer, yes, there should have been a sequel, at least an additional "college" season with Wally, Eddie and Lumpy, and perhaps all in the same dorm? That would be just dandy.

Actually, producers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher were planning on more episodes, but when they asked Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers, apparently they wanted to move onto other projects. It was a missed opportunity, especially when you consider the 12 year run of MY THREE SONS in comparison.

This is your atypical "up to no good" tale, starting off with Lumpy planting smoke bombs in Wally and Eddie's cars. As one good turn would have it, Eddie masterminds chaining Lumpy's car to a pole, and Wally agrees?

Guys will be guys, not realizing there are penalities to pay if they're caught. The dumbest thing here is the chain used -- has Mr. Cleaver's name on it!

Both Connelly and Mosher wrote this episode, and I really thought they stretched that scene a bit, even watching this as a kid.

Another lessons to be learned story, and if you're a movie buff, this story inspired a similar scene in AMERICAN GRAFFITI about 10 years later. The sitcom HAPPY DAYS, which had ties to that film, featured many other gags that were also lifted from LEAVE IT TO BEAVER.

A very popular episode, especially with Wally in a Beaver-type situation.

From SEASON 6 remastered dvd box set (Universal). Released 2011.

Is anyone laughing?
pensman9 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Lumpy is over at Wally's and he's doing something to Eddie's car. Eddie and Wally are supposed to be going out to meet girls: Eddie figures with Wally along the girls won't immediately move away. When Eddie starts his car, the engine begins to whistle then smoke pours out. Wally thinks it's a pretty good joke and then offers to use his car. When Wally starts his car, the same thing happens; Lumpy has struck twice in the same driveway.

At dinner, Beaver is talking about the joke. There was so much smoke it was like being in The Longest Day. Nothing serious was done to either car. Ward starts to relate one of his practical jokes, but June stops him. Eddie stops by to see Wally and impresses the Cleavers with his "adult" response to the joke; but when the guys go upstairs in Wally's room, Eddie is all for plotting a revenge joke.

Eddie's suggestions are all pretty dangerous, until Eddie suggests they tie a chain to a tree and the other end around the axle of Lumpy's car, he will be unable to move. Wally believes that sounds safe enough.

The boys are setting up the joke; but Lumpy hasn't appeared. Eddie calls Lumpy pretending to be Julie Foster. She needs Lumpy's help; he'll be right over. After Lumpy starts the car, he pulls into the street and the entire rear axle, tires and all, comes off. Not so funny now.

Fred Rutherford isn't amused; and the chain has Ward's name on it. Lumpy says it must be Eddie and Wally. Fred wants to know why Lumpy mentioned Eddie. What did Lumpy do? Now Wally knows he's on the hook to pay for repairs. Especially when Fred comes over with Ward's chain. Wally confesses saying they thought it was going to be a funny joke. Wally figures he and Eddie can repair the damage. Eddie comes over to ask Wally to a ball to a ball game; nope, we will be fixing Lumpy's car. No way, they can't connect us to that; just then Ward arises from the couch. He's on the phone with Fred telling him Wally and Eddie will be there Saturday.

All Eddie wants to know is how did they get caught. Don't use a tow chain with Ward Cleaver's name on it.

June wonders if Wally and Eddie can fix the car; Ward figures the boys will find out the answer to that pretty quickly. If dirt and grime are indicators of success, then the car should run. Fred comes out and asks if the boys have learned not to do practical jokes; yes sir, Eddie believe Lumpy has learned not to put cherry bombs in other people's cars too. Fred tells Lumpy if he started it then he should work on the car with the boys. Wally asks Mr. Rutherford a favor. He and Eddie are doing a pretty good job, so please don't make Lumpy help us.

It appears the car is running fine, Wally learned his lesson. Would Beaver play a joke on Wally?

A sort of filler episode. I know it's been a running theme that Wally likes working on cars, but this job would have really requited a serious mechanic. At the conclusion, all is forgiven. Lumpy drives over to see Wally and Eddie, he needs a favor. He put his tuba in the car, then he put the top up. Now he can't get the top down or the tuba out. Lumpy just doesn't disappoint.

Eddie the Instigator (Again)
john-202415 April 2024
When the first character onscreen is Eddie Haskell, you know something is going to go terribly wrong. This episode revolves around Wally, Eddie, and Lumpy and a series of practical jokes on one another. It all begins with Lumpy sabotaging Eddie's car while it's parked in the Cleaver's driveway. Eddie gets Wally to help him get revenge on Lumpy, and the two of them plan a practical joke to pull on Lumpy. The "joke" involves sabotaging Lumpy's car, but when they pull it off, it causes serious damage to the car. In this episode Eddie is in fine form. Ken Osmond does a great job portraying Eddie, and Tony Dow keeps pace with him throughout the episode. This is another rare instance where the boys get into fairly serious trouble rather than just a complication of something trivial. Hugh Beaumont, Barbara Billingsley, and Richard Deacon put in their usual fine performances as Ward, June, and Fred. Jerry Mathers is kind of goofy, as always.

One Practical Joke Deserves Another
StrictlyConfidential25 January 2021
(*Wally quote*) - "Well, you gotta admit, it was a pretty good joke."

That scoundrel, Eddie Haskell convinces Wally to join him when he plays a practical joke on that irksome oaf, "Lumpy" Rutherford (who has it coming to him).

The mischief that these two jokers create through their retaliation causes serious damage to Lumpy's car and now neither Eddie nor Wally is thinking that what they had done was very funny at all.
