Thomas Nast Invented the Tammany Tiger
boblipton19 December 2018
Two serious men in formal black wear speak to a man in a check coat. After arguing, they persuade him to take a lantern... and join them in being mauled by a tiger.

Thomas Nast not only invented the Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant. He invented the Tammany Tiger, to represent the ferocious depredations of New York's Democratic machine. In this case, the men in formal black represent the reformers who joined with Seth Low to bring down Tammany.

Low has served as mayor of Brooklyn before its amalgamation with New York. He was winding up his term as 92nd mayor of New York, and this short indicates what the film makers thought about his chances of second term.

The film makers were right.
