All aboard the floating casino 'Fairy Princess'
Tweekums7 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Ms Li's latest idea to raise funds is a casino night aboard a cruise ship; everybody is expected to attend. In the run up to the event Quinn bumps into a male model in the hair salon and ends up inviting him to join her for the casino night thinking he will raise her stature above that of her friends... although she would never say that was the reason of course! Jake decides he and Helen should attend too as it will be the perfect opportunity to try to get some business from the owners. Inevitably the night doesn't go as planned; Quinn's date doesn't turn up, the owner of the ship is a miser and it becomes apparent that Mr DeMartino has a gambling problem. These aren't even the worst of the problems; by the time the night is over everybody will regret setting foot on the 'Fairy Princess'.

The story line may be more than a little far-fetched but it was a lot of fun; Daria and Jane's attempts to find some peace and quiet so they can sleep was almost as funny as many of the dramatic moments... although not as funny as the fashion club's bickering; how they remain friends with their constant one-upmanship and backstabbing I do not know! There are some minor flaws of course; for example; if it is a mandatory event why are there so few people attending? It is as though Lawndale High School only has a couple of classes! Still that is a minor quibble; I thought it was a pretty good episode.

Contrived..but great.

Warning: Spoilers
Occasionally, "Daria" had plots that were contrived--featuring events that never would happen at any school. In this case, the school is sponsoring a Casino Nite on a cruise ship--talk about ridiculous. But, despite being nearly impossible to believe, it's well worth seeing.

Before going on the cruise, Quinn meets a hot older man who agrees to take her on the school's Casino Nite. She thinks this will make her the envy of the party, but when he doesn't show, the night turns out to be a bust. Mr. and Mrs. Morgendorffer come along for the ride and get to spend time with the sleazes who own the crappy ship. As for Mr. DeMartino, he tries to get out of chaperoning and SHOULD have told everyone about his gambling addiction--and it has hilarious results. As for Daria and Jane they do what they normally do--sit back and relax--making clever quips and laughing at the idiots.

Must-see scenes are the "Titanic" scene (Ms. Barch is brilliant) and Brittany and Kevin's brilliant evening. A very funny episode that can't help but make you laugh even if it is ridiculous. And, speaking of ridiculous, this show perpetuates an insane cliché--the 'perfect' poker hand. Helen is dealt a hand whose odds are 32 in 2,598,960. Such nearly impossible poker hands (such as four of a kind and straight flushes happen all the time in films and one TV) never occur in real life and most poker players NEVER have such hands ever!
