Camp scare

Very like "A Scooby Doo Valentine", "Camp Comeoniwannascareya" did very little for me on first watch. While that episode on first watch was very cheesy and bizarre, the problem with this was that to me initially it didn't feel like Scooby Doo and more like the Scooby, Shaggy and Scrappy shorts but without Scrappy. But there were episodes of 'What's New Scooby Doo' that fared a good deal better through young adult eyes with more to appreciate.

"A Scooby Doo Valentine" is one of those, and was actually the biggest improvement quality-wise from child perception to that of a young adult. "Camp Comeoniwannascareya" is another one of the massive improvements. An episode that lives up to its unique (for 'What's New Scooby Doo' and for the whole Scooby Doo franchise) title. Did fear that it would be a waste of potential, like "She Sees Sea Monster on the Sea Shore" (another episode with an attention grabbing title yet that time the execution was less than attention grabbing), and that it wouldn't feel like Scooby Doo. Despite half the gang being absent, this did feel like Scooby Doo somehow.

Sure, the mystery is on the thin side and takes a little time to get going.

However, Shaggy and Scooby are so loveable and true to character. Their friendship is truly charming and they are very funny together. Their lines are very faithful to the Shaggy and Scooby humour that is expected, nothing juvenile or dumbed down. Their rapport with the children entertained and charm and the children had personality and weren't annoying.

Loved seeing this side to Shaggy, proving that he should have been a leader more often. The camp setting is nostalgic and fun and the monster is suitably creepy. The truth is not much of a surprise but other episodes did this worse at this.

Animation is vibrant in colour and the setting is lovingly animated, like the animators had fond memories of being at summer camp. The music is groovy while not being at odds with the action. The theme song is hummable. Casey Kasem proves why he was unequalled as Shaggy.

Overall, so much better than remembered and one of the biggest improvements from first viewing to rewatch. 8/10.

Warning: Spoilers
I've not rated any episodes of the show a 10 before, but this one, this one is special, it is a complete departure from the normal Scooby-Doo reciepe and it works a treat. I remembrer this episode fondly from back in the day and I love it so. Every part of the mystery is so well done, it's just amazing how they managed to fit it into the short runtime. Well done them!
