An odd episode indeed
stinabina_943 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This episode seemed a bit off to me, but very amusing. A lot of things happen in this one, Richard falls in love (for the first time in the series!) and a new maid enters the household, which is probably the most interesting and odd part which perhaps saves the episode a bit, she gives the episode the most wonderful ending! Gwyneth is one of the oddest characters in Upstairs Downstairs (of what I have seen of the series so far, anyway)with her robotic manners and obvious mental problems and of course her desire of change. But Even if Richard's love affair is amusing as well, it also seemed a bit pushed, the whole episode seems a bit like there was an empty space that needed filling in with something. A comical feature in the series, anyway.

Richard Bellamy falls in love!
arrival20 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
August, 1913 This episode could have been likened to the infamous 'Swedish Tiger' (see my Review for that title) that was 'Upstairs, Downstairs'' dreadful low point of its first season - only for the fact that though 'nonsensical'; it is ultimately saved by the humour and comical highs - both of which the aforementioned episode lacked.

Two people are 'on the make' by pretending to have met carefully selected wealthy people, and then to claim to look them up years later. A Countess and her dead-beat brother contact the Bellamy residence whilst in London to call on them. The only one to see through their charade is Hazel Bellamy - but nobody believes her...

This is Richard Bellamy's first affair with another woman after having lost his first wife Lady Marjorie just eighteen months earlier.

In the meantime; the Bellamy's have a new housemaid 'Gwyneth' who appears to be too good to be true. So much so, Rose utters those classic lines; 'only Gwyneth; try not to do everything better than me'! Gwyneth later develops a crush on Richard Bellamy, confesses to it, and then leaves - all in one episode!

Not one of the best episodes in this season, but entertaining in parts.

Stars Sandor Eles.
