Cool vampire-themed episode
Woodyanders30 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The cynical Parker (a solid performance by Bruce Payne) and the rugged Burrows (the always excellent Michael Ironside in strong steely form) are two ex-soldiers turned poachers who enlist the assistance of scrappy local guide Jeri Drumbeater (sharply played with spunky snap by Vivian Wu) to do some illegal hunting in the remote Alaskan wilderness. However, the trio run afoul of a nest of ferocious vampires. Director John Hertzfeld, working from a compact script by Scott Nimerfro, relates the engrossing story at a snappy pace, makes fine use of the desolate snowy setting, maintains a tough serious tone throughout, and delivers one hell of a deliciously dark surprise macabre ending. Susan Tyrell contributes a spirited turn as sassy butch bartender Mona while Kaitlyn Walker has a memorably creepy bit as a little vampire girl. The bloodsuckers are supremely ugly and grotesque beasts. Both Rick Bota's polished cinematography and Frank Becker's galloping country-rock score are up to par. An enjoyable show.

"It's going to take a lot more than a lesbian Vampire biker whore to ruin my day." 30 Days of Night, Crypt style.

Warning: Spoilers
Tales from the Crypt: Comes the Dawn is set in the snowy Alaskan wilderness in a small town where two ex-military men Colonel Parker (Michael Ironside) & Sergeant Burrows (Bruce Payne) are on an illegal hunt for a Grizzly Bear which will fetch big money on the black market. They hire local girl Jeri Drumbeater (Vivian Wu) as a scout to assist them in the hunt relying on her local knowledge, however instead of leading Parker & Burrows to a Grizzly Bear she double crosses them & leads them into a ghoulish trap as the hunters become the hunted...

This Tales from the Crypt story was episode 13 from season 6, directed by John Herzfeld this is a pretty good horror themed thirty odd minutes & one of the better instalments from a variable sixth season. The script by producer Scott Nimerfro was based on a story from 'The Haunt of Fear' comic book & the thing that immediately stood out about Comes the Dawn is that it's basically a thirty minute version of the recent horror hit 30 Days of Night (2007) with the main difference being that the revelation that there is no sunlight during the Alaskan day for a couple of months is used as the twist ending as the 'hero' thinks he just has to stay alive until the sun comes up but then gets the shock that there is no sunlight for weeks. The other big difference is that this was made over a decade before the recent Hollywood effort. Comes the Dawn is pretty good but there's a fair bit of exposition & I'd have liked a bit more incident.

As usual this is well made with good production values. The opening shot is pretty cool & done in one long take. The Cryptkeeper sequences are a little silly as he sits around sunbathing with a pretty blonde babe sat next to him! There could have been a bit more gore in this considering the subject matter, there are some Vampires, a severed Grizzly Bear head & dead animal carcasses but not much else & it cuts away just as Parker & Burrows are about to get their comeuppance. The acting is fine, Michael Ironside is always watchable.

Comes the Dawn is a decent enough Tales from the Crypt episode & one of the better entries from the sixth season, not to be confused with the similar titled Tales from the Crypt episode Came the Dawn from the previous season.

Finally, a vampire themed episode
bellino-angelo201410 July 2021
Colonel Parker (Michael Ironside) and Sergeant Burrows (PASSENGER 57's Bruce Payne) are two former military men turned poachers that want to go in the high mountains for hunting some bears despite it's illegal there. They enlist local guide Jeri Drumbeater but after a while they find out that where the bears used to live it's now full of bloodthirsty vampires.

While vampires never appeared before in the show, it was just an ok episode. Movie villains Michael Ironside (who already guest starred in season 2's THE SACRIFICE) and Bruce Payne give good performances and the ending was quite unexpected. A time passer and nothing more.
