Regan's Soft Side
Theo Robertson21 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This starts exactly like a horror movie . A man is writing in a dark study late at night .He hears a sound . Scared by this noise he enters the hallway and realises he's not alone . It wasn't entirely unknown for several episodes of THE SWENEY to open this way , though it's far from routine for the series

May isn't a routine episode for the series . When the man from the opening sequence ends up in hospital with a fractured skull , it's two different rozzers from the flying squad who arrest the suspect who might be the slag who did the blag along with flying squad lingo such as " okay chummy get you coat we want to speak to you down the station " only to have the slag run off down a street

The mother of this week's character guest starring in a role before they became relatively well known then contacts Jack Regan and we get to see if not the soft side of Jack Regan then a more human side

This isn't problematic for the episode it's just that not a lot happens . If you're the viewer who remembers THE SWEENEY as the cop show that saw Regan and Carter giving very naughty boys a good kicking as they ripped off a white security van then you might find this a bit too character driven talkative and slow

Warning: Spoilers
Not bad, not great, this episode. It feels a little dull and unfocused at times, although it has a good guest star in the form of an incredibly young Karl Howman and a decent, harrowing climax.

Regan comes to the aid of young Davey Holmes (Karl Howman) who has been arrested for beating up a moneylender.

Davey's mother is an old friend of Regan and he has never been in trouble with the police before. His dad has though.

Davey seems to be rather cagey about his alibi. It turns out that Davey is involved with a married woman and playing with fire.

It is good to see a more caring side of Regan. Two other coppers are left with the rough stuff that includes a chase sequence involving Davey that conveniently ends up in a scrapyard.

It is an unfocussed episode where largely not much happens.
