"We're fighting a holy war of vengeance!"

Warning: Spoilers
Railroad detective Matt Clark (Jim Davis) and partner Frankie Adams (Mary Castle) pose as a married couple in this presentation on William Quantrill and his band of guerilla fighting Confederates operating on the Missouri/Kansas border during the Civil War. Though commissioned in the Confederate Army as a captain, Quantrill often acted on his own with little concern over his government's policies or orders.

This episode focuses on the infamous raid on Lawrence, Kansas that took place in 1863. Historically, Quantrill's Raiders burned down a quarter of the city and killed approximately one hundred and fifty men and boys, though these numbers are not revealed in this story. This was in retaliation for the deaths of female family members of known guerilla fighters who died when a prison in which they were held collapsed.

As was the norm for these 'Centuries' stories, Matt Clark and Frankie Adams play an integral part in warning the residents of Lawrence that a raid is about to take place. Their warning motivates the citizens to fight Quantrill's men when they hit town, thereby causing a rout with Quantrill calling a retreat after torching a number of buildings.

Confederate leadership was so appalled by this attack that they withdrew their tacit support from the bushwhackers under Quantrill. Voice over narration in the story describes how Quantrill was captured in Kentucky in 1865, dying in a prison hospital shortly after. It wasn't mentioned that Quantrill couldn't move after he suffered a spine injury in a shootout after he and some of his men were cornered in a barn.
