The Big Sleep (1946)
The title is an amalgamation of this story and The Long Goodbye, both about detective Philip Marlowe, who is highly reminiscent of the Dixon Hill character in this episode.In a Lonely Place (1950)
Picard's holodeck character, Dixon Hill, is based on Humphrey Bogart's character, Dixon Steele. The holodeck program and the film share similar characters, Whoopi Goldberg stands in for Gloria Grahame, and Goldberg's character's name is Gloria. Additionally, both Hill and Steele have a cop for a good friend who invites them home to dinner with his wife. The plots for the holodeck program and the film are similar as well, where Hill/Steele are suspected of a young woman's murder. In both versions the young woman was visiting Hill/Steele just prior to her murder.The Long Goodbye (1973)
