Episode 67 begins with Jessica in the hospital, where she asks Chester to return home to look after the family, while Dutch goes to pieces over her illness(Mary believes she needs a better diet).Burt gets the phone call he's been waiting for: the corrupt Sheriff Prentice was caught stuffing the ballot box, thus losing the election to Burt, who must now try to convince Prentice to leave without shooting anybody.Dutch decides it's time for him to leave, but Corinne's love convinces him to stay.Day one in court: E.Ronald Mallu has to contend with the unbeaten prosecutor F.Peter Haversham(Michael Durrell),who "once defended a woman who wanted the custody of her child,he made her look like Joan of Arc," despite the fact that she was on Death Row for cannibalism! His original choice for judge is also scuttled(arrested for indecent exposure the previous evening!),to be replaced by Judge Betty Small(Rae Allen),a former prosecutor who despises him and loves Haversham.Carol instantly perjures herself on the stand, claiming that her life was threatened by "a gang of homosexuals" if she ever tried to reclaim her daughter(the sympathetic judge asks Carol to "go ahead, darling").
