"Give me legs, father!"

Moe loses his edge as a bartender and decides to go back to school, so Homer tries to take over at the local tavern. When that doesn't work, Homer opens his own bar in the Simpsons family garage! This episode looks like a fun, typical sitcom story -- but watch closely for the darker elements. When Moe goes back to bartender school, he meets an old professor he admires -- but sadly, the man is dying of cancer. Watch the scene where he walks into the campus lake and drowns himself while Moe just stands there. Pretty dark stuff.

Sometimes the darkness is almost surreal. Watch Homer clean out his garage to build a home bar, and you see a half-built robot crawl out of the shadows. Apparently Homer started him and never finished? That's funny, but then the robot goes, "give me legs, father." And Homer just looks at him. Not a dumb look, mind you, but a hard blank look -- the way God looks at all human suffering? Then the robot crawls off down the street and we go back to a typical sitcom about the guys needing a new place to drink.

Sometimes this show is so good you have to watch it with a magnifying glass!

Homer the Moe

Warning: Spoilers
Moe gets shop by Homer is the highlight of the episode not because he deserves it but because it's the most interesting thing that happens, the episode is fine and all but it is missing something for sure, a recurring problem with the last few seasons.

This is an odd little episode, in which Moe's bar gets cool.

Some of the jokes veer back towards black comedy, but other than that this is a fun 20 mins of a much improved show.

Horrible

There's nothing funny about this episode:

We see a man kill himself - well done Simpsons, well done.

We see a "Bartender College" - wow, you couldn't come up with something better?

We see a apathetic and selfish Homer. (I remember John Swartzwelder saying he imagines Homer as a big dog - whoever wrote this episode clearly did not align with that.)

He makes fun of his kids and forces them to work in his "bar". He has 0 character. Great - exactly what I want to see: A main character as unsympathetic side character

Also Moe is a side character and should stay one. I hate his episodes.

It is exactly this kind of episodes that gradually ruined the show.

I am sorry for REM that they did not a better guest appeareance.
