Perfect episode and features my funniest Simpson moment
donnieandsarah9 October 2013
I have seen this numerous times and love the story. What a great idea for an episode. Had any other show ever covered a topic like a secret, organized club before?

Onto my favorite scene from the whole series: In the first act, Homer is stuck in traffic on his way to the power plant. He finds one spot, that is right next to his house. In the next act, when Homer becomes a Stonecutter, he drives to work, gets stuck, but turns down a lonely road. Then a fancy, secret tunnel opens up. His parking remains the same though. When Bart notices, he says, "Same spot, huh dad?". Homer responds, "Yeah, but they gave me these roller blades to glide to front door". He puts them on and wobbles around saying, "Sweeeet". Man, that whole scene is hilarious. Every time I am physically unsure of myself, I always repeat "sweet" like Homer.

Searched in vain for any details confirming the Stonecutters logo was taken from the animated film 'Heavy Metal'(1981)

Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
safenoe26 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
By far one of the best episodes of The Simpsons, and a very funny look at the influence of a secret society, the Stonecutters.

The Stonecutters song is one for the ages, and the lines are so telling...who holds back the electric car, who makes Steve Guttenberg a star? Love it! It really plays upon the rumors of undue influence of secret societies and their handshakes and the influence on the judiciary, police (ensuring blood samples "go missing" for instance), government and so on!

The Stonecutters song stands alongside the Simpsons mediocre presidents song!

Homer excels in this brilliant episode !!
Panterken23 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
In 'Homer The Great' Homer joins an ancient mystical society known as the stonecutters...with hilarious consequences. After discovering a strangely shaped birthmark on Homer's back, he is worshiped as a divine 'chosen one'. Of course Homer gets completely drunk with power.

I think this episode is so good because it completely revolves around Homer Simpson, the funniest character ever created in the history of comedy series. A lot of other episodes revolve around 2 weaker stories that involve Marge and/or Lisa, 2 slightly annoying characters at times. Especially Marge, who is the central figure in a lot of new Simpsons episodes (starting from season 12-13).

It's definitely my favorite Simpsons episode as it contains humor on so many levels: I loved the simple jokes as a little kid and now when I'm an adult/adolescent I enjoy the many mature jokes in every Simpsons episode. It's a really cool episode as secret mystical societies still speak to our imagination in a world were nothing's a secret anymore. ( just look at the success of The Da Vinci Code )

10/10 for this all-time classic.

"Homer the Great" is a cleverly written joyride of secret society mayhem
Zabon5 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing Carl and Lenny being secretive and enjoying numerous unexplainable privileges... Homer wants to join their secret society... known as the Stonecutters. After some painful initiations... Homer takes pleasure in the privileges. However, after a dinner with the rest of the members, Homer uses the sacred parchment as a napkin, destroying it. He is stripped from his robes and punished. Due to getting naked... it is revealed he has a birthmark in the shape of the stonecutter emblem. As a result, he is identified as the "chosen one"... who was supposed to lead the stonecutters to greatness. Homer is crowned... temporarily... but his reign is short-lived as the rest of the stonecutters grow tired of him... and form a new society: "The Ancient Mystic Society of No Homers." Clever writing. I like this episode.

An Excellent Homer related episode
jjsmith925 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
My favourite episode by far as Homer attempts to join a secret cult headed by the mysterious Number One (Patrick Stewart), The Stonecutters. In order to join the Stonecutters Homer must undergo a series of challenges (most of which are not only painful but humiliating) Homer passes and receives a number and sings merely with the rest of the Stonecutters until he screws up, however Homer is in fact revealed to be the chosen one, but Homer gets drunk with power.

The reason this episode is my favourite is because it focuses on Homer and isn't distracted by minor subplots with other characters. It has a great share belly laughs and a catchy tune to boot. 'Homer the Great' is my favourite Simpsons episode and you should check it out.

Very good Simpsons episode
richspenc7 April 2017
The first 8 seasons of the Simpsons are the great ones, the classic years (except for a few episodes first season where they hadn't quite hit their stride yet). Starting season 9, particularly with the horrible episode where Skinner is found a fraud and the "real" Skinner shows up, and after that the Simpsons just went downhill in quality. By season 14, the show became terrible. There was one episode that season where Homer is driving just babbling nonsensically with his head tilted back. Something even close to that in earlier seasons would've only been acceptable if Homer had just indulged in some kind of drug, been awake for 4 days straight, or that there would be some other convincing reason for Homer to act that way, and even then, the writers would've made Homer act better and less annoyingly nonsensical than that, while throwing in a comical sight gag or something. But in that season 14 episode, Homer didn't even have any particular reason for acting that way, no previous scene to show any explanation. This was just how the show had now become. It just lost all good quality. There were a few odd good episodes in season 14 and after, but not many, and even the better ones weren't the same anymore.

Anyway, back to season 5, the great classic years with "Homer the great". I really enjoyed the gags during the early parts of the episode like the Simpson's basement with the plumber and his lines, the cat meowing underwater, Homer's parking space at work being right by the house (Bart: "Hey dad" Homer: "do'h!") Homer's stool breaking and us seeing his "list", Homer's suspicion of Lenny and Carl (Lenny: "It's a secret" Carl: "ssshut uuup!"), and the no- Homers club gag. Many funny gags all throughout the episode. Homer's remarks about how he's been trying to ignore Grampa (Homer having already been told he can join the Stonecutters if he's the son of a member, but he still doesn't hear Grampa say "I'm a member"), Grampa's list of cards which includes "president of the gay and lesbian alliance", lol, and him being a Mason, which the Stonecutters in this episode bear sort of a resemblance to), and then the funny moment of Homer shoving Grandpa into Lenny's face (Homer: "can't throw me out, my dad's a member. Lenny: "OK, OK, you're a member. Just don't point that thing at me").

There are many more funny jokes and moments as the episode continues after Homer joins the Stonecutters, but I don't have room to write them all. I really liked the Stonecutters song, the private classy drive through tunnel for the Stonecutters with paintings and classical music, the plumber's reaction after learning Homer's a member, the international presidential committee of the Stonecutters and who they are, and the part where Homer becomes the "Chosen one" and what happens after that point along with more funny gags and jokes.

Homer The Great, great episode.
Gerardrobertson6122 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Great title for a great episode as Season 6 continues to give us memorable episodes, at least for the moment. What I love about this episode is the way Homer fights to get into the Stonecutters, then nearly gets kicked out before he is The Chosen One. The song is another classic sing-along and I love the No Homer's reference in both clubs. All in all, another one of my favourites and up in the top 20.

Homer joins the secret society of the Stonecutters.

This is a very strong episode with great humour and parody.

There are several hilarious moments in Homer's shenanigans with this boys club whose members include various Springfield residents and notable celebrities. Everything that leads to his membership is superb and after he joins we get to see the very amusing benefits. This is one of The Simpsons greatest parodies of an organisation.

My favourite part is the song, which is both lyrically and musically superb, and has great visuals to go along with it.

Patrick Stewart gives one of the best voice performances to ever grace the show.

Although universally lauded, I don't think every single joke lands, but that's just me. Comedy as always is in the eye of the beholder.

Marvelous Parody on the Masons
Hitchcoc31 May 2022
Great Simpsons episode. Homer comes to realize there are guys at work who are getting all the perks. It turns out they are members of the Stonecutters, a fraternal organization like the Masons. Of course, Homer has no respect for their bylaws and expectations. The best moment in the episode is the Stonecutters Song.

Surrealistic, wrong, that is one of the explanation of Simpsons Decline.
stefanodellicarpini13 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Wrong, Bored, some time issues, so annoying jokes, a lot of time issues (Why C. M. Burns had a grade below Lenny & Carl? Is impossible that Burns save a life so it's a Stonecutter thanks to his father, so why is possible that Lenny & Carl have grade upper? Also if this episode is true episode like "Last Exit To Springfield", "Who Shot Mr. Burns" and more are illogicale because why people permise to a such low grade like Mr. Burns to do so many violence against they?). Is also so surreal that didn't make the effect want it. Probably... ONE OF THE WORST EPISODE MADE BY SIMPSONS.

Weak writing in this one, it's just not funny. Lenny and Carl aren't good characters and the family barely involved.
