How low can you go? Frame a nice dog like "Yukon King" for murder...and then later in the show, shoot the canine? This evil guy, "Matt Bascom," is worse than Michael Vick.
"King" saves lives, not the opposite, as Sgt. Preston explains to these idiot gold diggers, one of whom accuses the dog of killing a man. Of course, Bascom (played by Paul McGuire) is the killer and uses the dog as the scapegoat. With no witnesses, he thinks he has a solid alibi - just his word against the dog's and despite King's reputation, all the residents turn against the dog. They aren't even convinced when the town doctor says there are no bite marks on the man's body. Wow, there must have been stupid people up there in this region (on this TV show, that is). No wonder Sgt. Preston is so badly needed. His dog is smarter than the populace!
Anyway, the good Sergeant does some detective work and turns into Sherlock Holmes in the process. It's interesting how he figures what really happened and then how King comes back and helps with some heroics. This is very adventure-packed.
This is my first look in over 50 years of the program. Now that Critic's Choice made this available on DVD, I thought I'd give it a look. The transfer is very good and the color is just fine. The fantastic Alaskan scenery looks nice. My only complaint is - and I hope it's only this episode - the audio is a bit off with the dialog a fraction of a second off-kilter which makes it look like you're watching a dubbed foreign film.
Anyway, this first episode of the first season is a very good one and you get you involved in the story big-time, especially if you like dogs.
Sgt. Preston sums it up at the end: "Dogs never lie, cheat or steal - only people do. Well, King, this is closed!"
