The promise of Richard Diamond
MissClassicTV20 September 2016
The first episode of "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" sets the table nicely for what this show is about. It's stylish, with an energetic lead character and an older, folksy supporting character. Richard Diamond (actor David Janssen) is tough-talking, loyal, and competent. With a hint that he's going to be a ladies man. There's so much promise here.

The story is about a crook who's wounded in a police shootout and before he dies, he hires Diamond to protect his girlfriend from his partner in crime. As the show builds to a climax, we're introduced to his police lieutenant friend and his faceless switchboard operator. We get a taste of the banter that'll become a trademark for this show along with the guns and fisticuffs.

Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of Richard Diamond, Private Detective and it is difficult to get over the early scenes.

Mickey Farmer is on the run from the police after a job. He is cornered and injured but he takes an old woman hostage. The old woman never shifts or shows much emotion as she stands next to Farmer and there is a shootout going on.

With the old woman abducted by Farmer. He makes an unusual demand. He wants to see Richard Diamond.

When Diamond arrives, Farmer wants to hire him. He wants to protect his girlfriend Sally from his partner in crime Benson, who double crossed him. Farmer wants Diamond to look out for Sally over the next few days, even though Farmer is dying after getting shot.

Only Diamond finds that Sally is not sweet and innocent that Farmer made out to be. She was in cahoots with Benson all along.

David Janssen plays Diamond as a solid king of guy who does not want to betray Farmer's dying wish. That opening with the old woman was pants.
