Storyline

Mickey Farmer has just pulled a payroll heist and killed two men. The police have him cornered as Mickey abducts an old lady at gunpoint. He escapes inside a building while holding the old lady hostage. Mickey calls out to police that he wants to talk to Richard Diamond. Against Lieutenant McGough's advice and leaving his gun behind, Diamond accepts to speak to Mickey alone. After promising "no cops", Mickey lets the old lady go. Mickey proceeds to tell Diamond about the heist, how the police were tipped off and how he was betrayed by his partner. Mickey wants Diamond to protect Sally, "a clean nice girl", who he went for in a big way. He wants Diamond to keep Sally from finding out about him and protecting her from his partner. The promise of Richard Diamond
20 September 2016 | by See all my reviews

The first episode of "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" sets the table nicely for what this show is about. It's stylish, with an energetic lead character and an older, folksy supporting character. Richard Diamond (actor David Janssen) is tough-talking, loyal, and competent. With a hint that he's going to be a ladies man. There's so much promise here.

The story is about a crook who's wounded in a police shootout and before he dies, he hires Diamond to protect his girlfriend from his partner in crime. As the show builds to a climax, we're introduced to his police lieutenant friend and his faceless switchboard operator. We get a taste of the banter that'll become a trademark for this show along with the guns and fisticuffs.
