Eric Fleming: Gil Favor

Quotes

  • Gil Favor : Bringin' a herd up through the plains of Texas on the Sedalia, Missouri Trail, you need three things: one of them, air, we have more than enough of. Another, grass, usually in good supply. But the third is another story. It's always with us, the need for water. Sometimes it's a real job to find it. And it's my job. Gil Favor, trail herd boss.

  • Gil Favor : Don't scold Mrs Hode. There's nothing like a jug for patching up a quarrel. Just leave 'em be.

  • Jim Hode : Mister, you see, because of the drought, there's not enough water to go around. It's either your cattle or ours.

Gil Favor : So you're just gonna make sure by taking over the waterhole.

Jim Hode : It's our land and our water. My father has a right.

    Gil Favor : Your father?

Jim Hode : I'm Jim Hode.

Gil Favor : I wanna talk to your father. Where is he?

  • Gil Favor : Is that how you're building up a herd? Finding other people's strays BEFORE they get lost?

  • Gil Favor : QUINCE! SCARLET!

Rowdy Yates : They could see our brands weren't freshly marked over.

Gil Favor : Some men borrowed twenty of our cattle. We're gonna collect them. From the way they said hello to Rowdy, they might not be too obliging.

  • Jess Hode : Not my worry somebody put a herd in your trust.

Gil Favor : My steers carry my trail brand.

Jess Hode : Nothing new or great about that. Us old-timers always had a trail brand.

Gil Favor : You look real hard at those steers you're about brand, you'll see what my brand is.

    Jess Hode : Meaning?

Gil Favor : You're branding my cattle.

  • Gil Favor : Jess, you must like being hated.

Jim Quince : This is business. Friendship's for small boys.

  • Carrie Hode : Are you sending him away?

Jim Quince : That's up to him.

Carrie Hode : Couldn't ya help him whatever he needed? Couldn't ya have made a friend?

Jim Quince : We don't need no friends.

    Carrie Hode : Don't we?

Gil Favor : Goodbye, Mrs Hode.

Carrie Hode : You're a vicious man, Jess.

Jim Quince : Carrie, your Virginia softness has never changed me.

Carrie Hode : Oh, I gave that up. You are what you are and I've lived with you this long. But, Jess, I'm not gonna have my boy grow up in your image.

  • Joe Scarlet : I don't mind cleaning a bit of dirt. You sit down.

    Jim Hode : All right.

Joe Scarlet : That's what a room's for, to be used. I don't mind cleaning up afterwards. But Mr Hode says it's foolishness to have a parlour like this fit for visiting ladies and there ain't any ladies to visit. No closer than two, three days by buckboard.

Gil Favor : I guess you're pretty much alone.

Joe Scarlet : And you haven't come on any social visit, have you?

  • Gil Favor : Save me a slice of that fresh loaf.

Wishbone : If you want anything with it, you gonna have to milk one of those steers. Boy, man was sure right when he said, if he owned Texas and Hell, he'd rent out Texas and live in Hell.

Rowdy Yates : Well, ain't that the truth.

  • Jess Hode : They say I could boss a herd no more. Well, I decided I'd show 'em, build up my own herd, boss the whole range, and I dun it. We come this place, there was nothing. Nothing. And we had nothing. Your mother's little legacy sent you back East for learning. Then I pitched in, starving almost at first. With the railroad coming, I knew what beef would mean. And I got it wherever I could. Sure, in the scrub or on the prairie. So what if some didn't have brands on them. Any fool that didn't have sense or guts to look out for his own, deserved to lose 'em. I BUILT UP MY HERD!

Gil Favor : With a long rope, a branding iron, and maybe a shot on the back some dark night.

Jess Hode : And I ain't sorry for any of it. Because I ain't poor no more. And nobody tells ME what to do. NOBODY! NOT YOU! AND NOT YOU, BOY!
