This guy was an accident waiting to happen...yet in this case, he appears to be innocent.

Martin Balsam plays Detective Koster--an older cop who likes to cut corners and do things his way. When the show begins, you see him (well, actually, it was a stunt double with a BAD wig) driving like a nut and nearly causing accidents--all to get to lunch as soon as possible! His new young partner, Bermudez (A Martinez) says very little during all this.

During the course of the show, a gunman enters a corner store to rob it- -and ends up killing the owner in the process. Later, another store robbery is reported and a guy is seen by the two detectives running from the place. Koster orders the guy with a gun to stop--and the guy turns while still holding the gun. Koster fires--killing him. However, they soon learn that the dead man is an off-duty cop (Mercado)--and Koster is going to be investigated by Internal Affairs. While Koster appears to be innocent, he IS like an accident waiting to happen with his "I'll do it my way" style.

What Koster doesn't know is that one of his snitches (Jack Carter) has inexplicably concocted a story. He claims that BEFORE the shooting, Koster and Mercado had known each other AND they were fighting over a woman! Internal Affairs seems to believe this story--particularly a gung-ho cop, Sgt. Walters (James Olson). While you don't necessarily like Koster, he doesn't deserve this. What's going to happen to this veteran cop?

I liked that this was NOT a cut and dry case. Koster was not 100% likable and you rarely have seen a character like him on television! An interesting story--well worth seeing.
